Do not weep for not being Irish. The women of Ireland have long shown us the way forward. Have long carried the suffering and the men, the heroes, have long been in awe of their female comrades. There is romance, true, but there is a spirit deep down, like a rod of steel that runs through every Irish woman I have ever met. If only I had their steel I would be a better man than am, hero an all that I are.
She is the voice of ireland. All our struggle. Sang with love heart and passion. Sinead u are a legend ur voice is a god given gift. So so proud ot you
Our dearest Sinead. You'll be always missed your music will live on. She fought demons most of her life and fought for the underdog throughout her life. Her beauty, wisdom, intelligence, voice filled Our hearts forever. Our bravest irish woman. Rest in peace ❤❤❤
Such a beautiful rendition of this song. Sinaed,, had the voice of an angel, and an honest and true heart, she was the voice of lreland, and will be sorely missed Rip 🙏 lrish Angel, you'll never be forgotten❤☘️.........
Such incomparable beauty from a much and cruelly wronged woman. She spoke truth, but most of us would not listen. She asked for justice, and we answered with ridicule and derision. I will remember and honor your pain and virtue, lovely Sinaed, as I live with my shame.
A marvelous poem sung by a divine voice in a minimal musical arrangement! Pure gold! Thank you Sinead, thank you polly for sharing this gem! Love from Greece!
I always loved this song with Sinead! I play it on my keyboard every day. This version is so great and touches my heart, can't hold my tears back! RIP Sinead ❤🙏
I can't believe this. I know the general meaning of this song, and the first time I listened to it was in Barry Lyndon. But Sinéad... I don't really know what the words mean, but she made me drop some tears. She sings to the heart, and I love your true language, Irish People. I find that we, the spanish and the irish are alike in many aspects. Music is one. ;)
She's mentally ill, Dear Luis, and great as God is, he does not take something from you without giving you something. Thus, in this woman's voice is the reflection of the totality of existence and, somehow, against all odds, a reasonable projection of that. This performance defies reasonable expectations. Fortunately, those her were accompanying her not only understood what is in this song, they recognized how they had to support her at it.
Yes we are most definitely alike, when I am in Spain I sometimes feel like I could be in an Irish setting except the people are dark skinned and speaking a language unfamiliar to me but I feel something that always reminds me of home....I love the Spanish people
@JobHuntingAbroad Some of my girlish ancestors fled the brutal occupation of the english and escaped to Spain They became the Seville Orange growers, our name O' Neiil from high the Great who rules all of the north of Eire before the English✋️
Sinead virtually destroyed her career by speaking out against abuse within Catholic Church. At the time. she was ridiculed, reviled and dismissed as some kind of freak. She was proved right in the end. An incredibly brave woman, who sacrificed so much to tell the truth.
I was watching when she did that on live television. I was dumbfounded with respect for her courage; unfortunately, too many others had a problem with it.
I was raped not by one, not by two but by three Roman Catholic priests by the age of 11 and in two different parishes. When my mother spoke out and complained to the cardinal we both were excommunicated. Then one evening I watched as this woman on TV tore up a picture of the man who I had written in a letter begging for a reversal of that excommunication and who denied it on grounds that my original complaint constituted blasphemy. She was the very first person who ever stood up for me outside of my family. Today I remain excommunicated because I refuse to withdraw my accusations against the three priests who raped me. The original cardinal, cardinal Richard Cushing of Boston, stated that making such a complaint constituted blasphemy and said in his original letter to me that the priests in question claimed that I attempted to seduce them. I was ten when it first happened. This is the mindset of the Catholic church. She has been my hero ever since that night almost thirty years ago. If I lived anywhere near her grave there would never be a day it wasn't covered in fresh flowers.
I don't think I've heard anything as truly beautiful as this! Sinead what makes you so resistant to accepting yourself! iYou are immensely talented and have touched so many of our faceless souls with your gift. I thank you and pray you may find peace now on this mortal coil❤
Dedicated to my mom, Elizabeth Gilroy Johnston and her mom, my nana, Elizabeth Hickey Gilroy--both born in New York, but of 100% Irish descent, and it's amazing how many Irish women I've known, particularly the older ones, remind me of them. Thank you and bless you always.
Maybe the most beautiful song, sung by maybe the most beautiful voice & intonation. If this doesn't bring you that feeling of cold electric shower (shivers), I don't know what would.
A big thank you to the women of Ireland, or at least to those of Cork city. You greeted me an overgrown child and made a man out of me, giving me true happiness. And that city... oh, that city is and forever will remain for me paradise on earth! Can you feel homesick while at home? For that's how I feel now,,,
Hi, mise aris ,there was a contribution by leopolis concerning the genre of this High Classical piece of Irish poetry ,now, it has absolutely nothing to do with Irish Rebel music, however worthy that may be ,Wikipedia just made a hames of the explanation, It really is about the many types of Women in Ireland, in their praise with love ,written in early eighteenth century ,so it is two hundred years old ,still going strong, I do also like Sinead O Connor's version
I first heard this in "Barry Lyndon", played by the Chieftains. Sinead's voice adds a truly ethereal dimension to it. Wish I could understand the words. My Grandma spoke Gaelic, but sadly is no more with us.
This is a lovely, soft and lilting rendition of the song. Sinead O'Connor is stunningly beautiful with an heavenly voice. The Kate Bush version is great too. They are both truly gifted and they know how to evoke an emotionally powerful uplifting feeling.
Who wants officiality? I want heart! To hell with officiality, it is arbitrary and false. I love to hear Sinead O'Connor sing...it comes from the heart, it is therefore beautiful and real to me. Joey
Better a battered career rather than a battered spirit. Not to speak is like (her song for Dolly Parton) a dagger through the heart. She walked tall and carried a big stick. She did not give up. I admire her for that. I loved her voice from the beginning and I will until the end...although, there is no end as the end is only the beginning. Listening to her, I now know why the caged bird sang...and why she chose to be bald.
SO perfectly done! Haunting and touching with the lightest movement almost like a balmy breath, lingering fragrance. Thank you for posting this for all of us to hear and cherish!
I am Irish, I am a Man . I voted for Mary Robinson , a woman, to be a President of Ireland for All its people .Then she takes it upon herself to mouth on and on about , Mna na h Eireann .I am sorry I ever voted for her . We are all equal .
There's a woman in Ireland who'd give me a gem and my fill to drink, There's a woman in Ireland to whom my singing is sweeter than the music of strings There's a woman in Ireland who would much prefer me leaping Than laid in the clay and my belly under the sod There's a woman in Ireland who'd envy me if I got naught but a kiss From a woman at a fair, isn't it strange, and the love I have for them There's a woman I'd prefer to a battalion, and a hundred of them whom I will never get And an ugly, swarthy man with no English has a beautiful girl There's a woman who would say that if I walked with her I'd get the gold And there's the woman of the shirt whose mien is better than herds of cows With a woman who would deafen Baile an Mhaoir and the plain of Tyrone And I see no cure for my disease but to give up the drink
This is such a beautiful version of a great song by a magic singer, but who can tell me how I can get hold of this one? It's superb! Thanks for showing us this beauty!
I have goosebumps just listening to this. I had no idea Sinead sang this, all I heard was Kate Bush and I must say they're both good but Sinead really gives it a haunting feeling.

When my children were little I sung them this every night. You will always be a part of our family Sinead. We love you forever 🤍🙏🏼✨

Danke❤
Ruhe in Frieden.
Stephanie, Sinead was the first person to stand up to the Roman Catholic Church on our planet against their sex & slavery crimes.😇
A marvelous poem sung by a divine voice in a minimal musical arrangement! Pure gold! Thank you Sinead, thank you polly for sharing this gem! Love from Greece!

I always thought it was because she supported the Ira...with the atrocities committed by the English government I cant say shed be wrong if she did.
She was silenced and canceled for speaking truth

Maybe the most beautiful song ever. Here sung by one of the most beautiful voices ever ... and the Right voice/singer for the song.
like an angel sang a voice on my ears, i couldn't understand a word of it, it seemed the language of angels, the languages of birds to me.
Listen to the kate bush version it gives the words in english in the description
I wish I was a fluent Irish speaker.
It truly is a beautiful language.
This is not English. Not at all...
These beautiful words are in IRISH GAELIC, a Celtic language... ❤

Just got reacquainted with this song from the Bob James 3 album. This is a very nice version here by Sinead. a beautiful song for sure.
Maybe the most beautiful song, sung by maybe the most beautiful voice & intonation.

Voice of an angel - dont understand a word but it sounds beautiful.
I think this is the most beautiful song Ive ever heard, thank you Sinead

So beautiful. This piece is featured in the new epic Robin Hood movie with Russell Crowe, Kate Blanchette, and Max von Sydow.
voice of an Angel
So haunting and beautiful...if it were only readily available on CD... Sigh. Thanks for sharing this with us!
what is it exactly with her voice, even after the lush youth notes are gone and the smoking damage is being done?
Precious!
I dont know why, but this song makes me cry, like the soundtrack from the Wuthering heights movie, they are so similar, amazing music !!!
