    My brother has limited dexterity in his left hand as a result of being in a car accident nearly 13 years ago and shattering his elbow about 6 years ago. My first thought when I saw this feature added was that this would be awesome if he took the time to figure out new layouts that could help him have an easier way to play his games. I'd take him being able to better his enjoyment of games over folders and themes any day.

      @@bloodless653 I don't have one, so I could be wrong, but it looks like you can wire any kind of switch to any of the "buttons", and that it doesn't need to be an official Microsoft add on. I've thought about using one as the base for an arcade control deck.

      I was thinking the same thing. I had to be left handed for a disabilities class for a day (to emulate having had a stroke), and I would have loved to be able to play some games one handed. Themes and folders are cute, but the video game industry is kind of bad for accessibility.

      You still should be asking game developers to include the option and not just rely on this. It would make it a lot more convieniant. Rather than having to change the mapping for every single game, the remapping is already saved in the game

      I remember how excited I was when I realized that I could remap the crouch key in Counterstrike back in 2002ish; I chopped off my pinky when I was like 5, luckily the doctors were able to reattach it and I have use of it, but it's like 3/4 of an inch shorter than the other and I was never able to reach some of the keys on a keyboard.
      Such a small victory for me, but it meant so much.I can only imagine what it feels like to have more serious disabilities be addressed in gaming to allow more people to experience it.

      Jace Beleren well , i have sort of bad news for you. I have RSI on my right hand, and Inexplicably, you can't remap the a & b buttons to the left joycon. So that one handed layout sadly won't work for your (and my) left hand : (

      Same. I shared a story about a class assignment I had to do where I had to be left handed only, but you just reminded me that I crushed my left thumb several years ago, and it starts to hurt after using a game controller for too long. I could map all important movement controls to the right stick (and remap some other buttons to compensate) and avoid that issue all together.

    • @alexn.t.6344
      @alexn.t.6344 4 роки тому

      Jos no, you can't remap a & b buttons to the left joycon (using both joycons - deattached). They must be remapped only in the right one. I've tried several times, so if you know the way to do so, please share it.

    • @alexn.t.6344
      @alexn.t.6344 4 роки тому

      Jace Beleren yes, you can. What I'm saying (maybe poorly expressed) is that you can't just take away those buttons from the right joycon, they must be remapped there, so eventually you will lose useable buttons. But I realize that sr and sl can be use for that purpose. So problem solved.

    Remapping is a huge deal for accessibility, and it also eases the use of third party or custom controllers, which are also huge for accessibility. For a few people out there, these features can make the difference between being able to play and having to pass on it. PC gamers have pretty much always had these sorts of options, and while that's great, it also means PC might be the only option to people with certain needs. That means just not getting to play exclusive titles like Zelda. It's really encouraging to see Nintendo step up and show some flexibility.

      Dude, that R button is my source of grief.
      I had my Switch since Christmas, and always took good care, but like, 3 times... 3 lame little drops of the right joy-con, and that R button was gone in 2 months.
      Let me tell ya: that little annoying, soldered straight on the joy-con motherboard button, gave me some experience dealing with busted board copper tracks that I thought I had...
      If I had designed that crap I would have put that button on a separate flex board like the left joy con has.
      A few "pro" tips for whoever wanna venture into replacing the button instead of the joy-con or whole board:
      1 - the button is identical to the 3DS and 2DS ones (dunno the New ones, but old 2DS/3DS yes);
      2 - don't flood in flux the new button when soldering it back. You'll screw the internals of it and never be able to clean it without possibly ultrasonic bath;
      3 - there are 2 test points on the board that lead to the button contacts. So completely ripped off tracks on the board aren't the end of your journey, you can find about them on-line.

    Another use case (although an unusual one) is for people who use some alternative controllers, I got myself an iPega 9083 which is Switch-compatible to play handheld mode in places or situations where my usual joycons out for whatever reason, like a particularly rough game that I fear will damage my joycon sticks, there is a fatal issue of that controller that it had the Xbox face button layout and for some reason registers as such (so Y position button is X), but now with the remapping it works perfectly

    A great use of remapping is for the wired classic controllers from the minis using ether the 8bitdo GBros adapter or wifi dongle (plus wiimote). In Megaman Legacy Collection, rewind is L and minus is save-states and now with a limited button NES controller, rewind can be select and screenshot (on the adapter) can be save-state. Additionally, in the Mana collection, ZL is save-state and with a SNES controller, that can simply be L. If you already own these classic wired controllers and don't want to buy the online-membership only versions, this is a big win. Playing these games with their respective controllers plus the modern features is fantastic.

    There is the inherit problem of the game not showing the right button prompt, so you have to remember which button is which. Rather then forcing you to remember which button is which

    The best use i have for this feature is, by far, remapping my DRIFTING left stick to the right. It works in these 2 scenarios:
    -ACNL: i remapped the joycons to MIRROR the other one, this way, i dont lose my money rock streak and dont aim the shovel randomly. The camera inside the house goes crazy but i can live with that
    -NES, SNES and 2D games: by using the left "d-pad" but remapping the left stick to the right, the game doesnt receive random "up" inputs from the drifty stick and i can play normally.
    I hope this is useful for other people

    Being someone who's had more P.C.s more often than consoles (not for a dislike of consoles, just that I didn't get my first one until I bought it myself) this makes all the sense in the world. Half of routing non-Steam games through Steam is to be able to use the Steam Input API so that you can remap controls even if the game doesn't natively support this (as well as being able to rig up some macros and such. Button remapping on the Switch with a Switch controller that supports macros could make for some really smooth control schemes (although not being able to switch stick and D-Buttons/D-Pad does kind of nerf the range of things that you can do).
