Kylo Ren is a classic example of a young man who feels like he can't trust the proper authorities for protection, and so turns to a violent gang for a chance at safety, protection, and learning to become strong.

People say Kylo Ren is a monster because he's involved in the death of innocent people while he was defending a cause he believed in.
As far as I know, the resistance have killed thousands upon thousands of people when they exploded Starkillerbase or when they crashed the star destroyers / dreadnought and they did it because they were defending a cause they believe in. Not everyone on that base / ship were there to fight, a lot of them didn't have a choice or were simply doing their job.
While people will say it's not the same thing, the difference between the two is really just on which side of the conflict you are.
Storm troopers are soldiers and yet no one calls Poe a monster when they die. If Resistance fighters get killed, Kylo Ren is a monster.
In the prequels, the separatists were called the monsters and yet it was the Republic that refused to let them separate in the first place. So technically, the republic and those who were working for the republic were the monsters if we go by this logic.
When Rey met Kylo, all he did was stop her from shooting him. Yes, he kidnapped her but he hadn't hurt her. Yet, she wanted to kill him. But no one calls her a monster for being so aggressive.
While I am not saying Kylo Ren is innocent, I am saying he isn't the only monster. Everybody got blood on their hands...
Thank you for such a great video, by the way

Truth is a point of view. You make very good points and I strongly agree. Kylo is by no means innocent for what he did for the First Order, but who is innocent in war? Glad you liked the video!

You said so well what I’ve been thinking for a while now 😊 that was part of the story in TLJ and what the character DJ said. Kylo/Ben was conflicted because he had light in him and he and Rey were a dyad because she had dark in her. At the end of TROS they were balanced, neither one of them fully light or dark. He’s got to be still around in the world between worlds and she needs to find him.

Given the nature of this movie, imagine this alternative ending:
Ben Solo returns with Rey to the Resistance. She steps out of the ship first and is greeted by adoring friends and allies. Kylo Ren, injured from their battle with Palpatine, limps out. He looks at the crowd with timidity and fear, knowing that they know who he is and hate him for what he's done.
Chewie steps forward from the crowd, staring at Ben. He draws closer, and Ben looks up at the wookie, trembling in fear and on the verge of tears. The last time they saw each other, Kylo Ren killed Han Solo, Chewie's best friend, and Chewie shot Kylo Ren. Chewie reaches out, causing Ben to flinch at first, until he realizes Chewie is pulling him into an embrace. He hugs Chewie tightly, shutting his eyes as tears squeeze through his eyelids. He sobs into Chewie's shoulder. What's left of the Solo family has been reunited at last.

What makes this even worse is that J. J. had originally planned to give Rey and Ben their happy ending. It was already filmed, but when that version of TROS was shown to the higher ups at Disney, Bob Iger and the rest, just had to ruin it. They just had to give Palpatine the last laugh by letting his influence drag every single member of the Skywalker family into the grave, including the two people who married into it. That's why those last-minute reshoots happened.
The only good news is that now that the movies are done and most of the casual fans are drifting off and taking their shallow (and in many cases, toxic) views with them, the Star Wars writing board can fix this. We'll have to wait until March 19th when the novelization comes out to start digging for more clues, but since the author is an experienced romance writer and no doubt can to tell a better story then the Disney CEO, she will leave us further hints about Rey getting her man back.

    • @BelleofAvonlea
      @BelleofAvonlea 4 роки тому +12

It really sucks that they didn't go with the happy ending (which is ironic considering it's Disney). I can't wait to see what the novelization gives us, but we've already gotten plenty of other clues from the people at Lucasfilm story group, so I'm really hoping the story will continue in some shape or form. I would love it if they made an animated movie! (Because I don't think the actors will come back for a live-action one, unfortunately.)

You’re crazy. No matter how you try to dress it up the fact of the matter is Kylo killed his dad and for a petty spiteful reason. Kylo is almost 30 years old. He is hardly a kid.
Disney made a wide decision in going with this ending. But the general public would never accept this. Because only the rabid Kylo Ren fans want to hand wave away what he did. If they wanted this ending then they should have come up with a plausible reason why Ben killed Han. Like they got into a fight and Ren’s blaster went off. Or Hux or Phasma killed Han and Ren didn’t interfere. These are reasons Ben might get off. But not as it stands in TFA

    • @molliethomas2585
      @molliethomas2585 4 роки тому +12

@@vittoriacolona His actions are not hand waved. They're acknowledged and taken into account along with all of the manipulation and abuse that Ben has suffered since he was in Leia's womb. Don't believe me on that part, then read Aftermath: Lifedebt.
And while I have no idea what kind of life you've led, I and so many others who have been bullied and neglected for one reason or another have had an easy time relating to Kylo/Ben, because we saw part of ourselves in him. And while his decisions were awful, that does not take away the fact that he was also a victim of Palpatine, as was the rest of the Skywalker family. It sucks that his full backstory had to be given to us in other media, but it is all cannon, and is incredibly relevant.

Thank you, finally someone who gets it! Ben Solo should have lived. And even if he had to redeem for his crime. Killing him made no sense. I mean killing Ben, was like giving him the easy way out for the crimes he commented. Indeed his misdeeds were as harmful as Anakin's, and I believe he was full away of what he was doing. That's why he was in constant pain. Plus he was the last Skywalker.

Vader did way more horrible things than Kylo Ren so I really don't get why people say that it was what had to happen (his death). Ben Solo deserved to live because he never really got the chance to be happy and no one can change my opinion.

Whole heartedly agree u hit the nail on the head. Ben Solo is such a deep misunderstood character and J.J wrote him beautifully and Adam Driver played him masterfully. Now say what u want about Rian Johnson but in the Last Jedi we get a great picture of Kylo/ Ben’s inner turmoil. And I love it. And like u said although their stories are similar Anakin in the end chose the Dark Side out of more selfish reasons and gave into hate. Ben only hated his uncle for good reason tho. But he could never fully embrace the Darkness because of his beautiful soul. Rey was the only person to truly show him compassion and understanding. So she help turn him towards the light but Leia reaching out and thru the force to forgive him and accept him with her dying breath saved him, and of course him projecting the memory of his father forgiving him helped too. But without his connection with Rey it wouldn’t have happened. So Thanks for this video it is great to see other people who share the same opinion about Ben Solo. 😊😀😁

Well done - I liked your analysis; I think that the ST didn't do Ben/Kylo justice, considering the average viewer came away with a very incomplete understanding of the character (and I think his character is the best in the ST, BTW). It's a real shame they didn't incorporate some of his back story in the movies - it would've cleared up a lot of misconceptions. Not sure why they didn't. Huge missed opportunity.

Thank you for your positive approach & the simple clarification. Some fans choose to compare the two and find Kylo lacking because he’s a weak, lousy villain. Some fans wanted a bad to the bone villain. Kylo Ren was a lousy villain because he wasn’t truly one. I’ll always see him as a dual protagonist with Rey.
I was positive it would be revealed in TRoS that Kylo didn’t actually kill the Jakku villagers. Yoda, or possibly, The Child now older, was in the opening scene of TFA. Why has that never been touched upon again? 🤔 The audience was specifically shown Kylo holding back Poe’s laser blast for a reason. I was positive Kylo used a Jedi mind trick on the Stormtroopers. He stayed behind when he could have dramatically stomped off like Vader. Instead, he kept his right fist clenched and stayed put. The villagers then collapsed like Rey on Takodana. Finn was the only one who didn’t succumb & Kylo knew it. Lor San Tekka possibly deserved to die. There were skeletons in cages in the village, according to one of the junior novels. I thought Lor betrayed Luke and Kylo killed him because of it. 🤷🏻‍♀️
As for Han Solo, he loved his son and Kylo/Ben loved him right back. I always found it puzzling that Kylo said, “Thank you,” if it wasn’t because Han ignited the saber. Had Han not sacrificed himself then Snoke would have definitely killed Kylo/Ben for failing.
I don’t like that Han is dead but it 100% split Ben Solo to the bone. He did have his father’s amazing heart and he channeled his inner Solo at the end of TRoS. He was amazing!
Like you, I believe Ben Solo is alive. Otherwise, he should have been shown as a Force ghost with Luke & Leia. He was my favorite character in the ST and I’ve been a fan for 43 years & counting. In all that time, I’ve never been a villain fan. Kylo was Rey’s enemy because they were on opposing sides & the franchise is called Star Wars. I hope we see the true potential of the dyad in the future.

Can't believe I only just found this one. I completely agree with you. In Ben's case, I think dying was the easy way out. It would have been much harder if he'd had to continue living and...you know, actually face himself and the terrible things he'd done. If he'd lived, I don't think his redemption arc would've been over at the end of episode IX. It would have just been beginning, if anything. That's why I think it would've been great to end it with him and Rey saying they're going to dedicate themselves to finishing off the last of the First Order. Not only would that be a great way to show his commitment to making amends for his past actions, but...let's be honest, they would've had to go on the run, anyway, as somehow I doubt most people would be accepting of him and his insistence that, "I'm different now." No, he would've had to PROVE himself. Anyway, I agree that to say he and Vader are the same is ridiculous. A good argument well-presented, as usual.

As for me Anakin died because the death was the only possible mercy saving him from constant pain of wounds which were never recovered. His body wasn't suitable to live after Redemption. He had payed too much for everyting. As for Ben... the Redemption did of him a kind of Angel and the human body became too weak and small for his existance. Both of them can help people as force ghosts. The one can come to people in despair the other can teach to heal wounds of body and soul.

I agree they both were victims and did fall into the dark side but it wasn't their fault. Especially Ben. Anakin did have to die because of all the dark things he had done before but with Ben, it was different. He was never truly evil, he was a victim and did indeed do many dark things but it wasn't his fault. He was a victim and was influenced by the dark side of the force as a young child. He feared Luke ever since the day he tried to murder him, he felt angry, his anger led to hatred and the feeling of betrayal, which led to the dark side. With Anakin, it was different, he chose to go into the dark side to save Padme, because he wanted to save her, but was tricked and he fell into the hands of darkness, of Palpatine. Ben had no where to turn to but the darkness. No one was going to believe him that his uncle, the Jedi legend Luke Skywalker, tried to murder his own nephew. Throughout his dark path, he was always conflicted with the light, always being pulled toward it. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he kept telling himself it was too late to turn. At the same time, he wanted revenge and power. He couldn't help it, he was the grandson of the infamous Vader after all. As soon as he met Rey, he felt compassion for her and as a result, he spared her life many times. His thoughts began to change as he felt a stronger and loving connection between himself and Rey. Rey was a light that guided him out of the darkness. His dark path ended after finally realizing his wrongdoings and after feeling the love from his mother Leia, his father Han Solo, and last of all Rey. The darkness in him was replaced by light, his hatred with love, and his anger and fear with happiness and compassion. Ben Solo deserved to live. After all, he and Rey are a force dyad. Two that are one, the one that is meant to be.

I rlly don’t think Ben should’ve died he was far more conflicted I rlly think he should’ve gone to the light. This is how I think the rise of skywalker should have ended. Ok so ben is thrown off to the cliff and rey has almost all her force life taken out of her witch bring palptine to his revenge of the sith state. But right before He is to kill rey and the new rebellion Anakin shows up not as a force ghost but as him revenge of the sith self. He has all his knowledge from the last 50 years. Palptine senses anakin power and that he has reached his full potential. We see an epic duel where anakin uses both leia and his own saber. Anakin beats and kills palptine. Ben gets up and runs to rey but she has died ben is about to sacrifice himself but anakin goes to him they exchange words and Ben finds some peace in meeting anakin not Vader. Anakin says something like my time is up he brings rey back and slowly fades away. Yoda, mace, obi wan, leia and luke look happy that anakin did it he fulifed his destiny. Anakin fades away. The ending scene is of rey and Ben married on anakin home planet rey and Ben are married and she is expecting her first child. Leia and luke look on and rey calls her self a solo. The end credit scene is of anakin showing up in a dark place and the people who control the force or the wills tell anakin he fulfilled his destiny but at the same time broke the forces rule but for saving the galaxy he gets one he always wanted padme. I like your analysis for the most part, but I have to disagree on one major point. You mention how Anakin and Ben were dealt bad hands in life, and you emphasize the main difference being that Anakin actively chose the dark side while Ben was forced into it. I must disagree here
First off, we have to look at their upbringings in life. Anakin was born a slave, and his mother was essentially the only person he had aside from a couple other slave kids. Then at a young age, he makes the difficult choice (and I acknowledge it was his choice) to leave his mother and devote himself to the Jedi. Next time he sees his mother is when she dies in his arms
Compare that to Ben. I'm not *intimately* familiar with new EU, but as I understand, while Han and Leia led busy lives and didn't have a lot of time for him, he still grew up in luxury with two loving parents, an uncle, and family friends like Lando and Chewbacca. There was Snoke's influence the whole time, yes, but his reaction to the night Luke ignited his saber was his decision and his alone
It speaks volumes that his gut reaction isn't to go "Uncle Luke, what the hell?", but to summon his own lightsaber and strike at him, then leave him for dead (more on that in just a moment). I know it's established he actually wasn't the one who killed Luke's other students, but again, both of his parents deeply love him. The fact that he didn't go "Mom, Dad, there's this crazy shit going on" is all on him. Even *knowing* all he had done by the time of TFA, both still held out hope to get him back, so there's no way they wouldn't have then
And lastly, as one small nitpick, you mention that aside from Lor San Tekka and Han, he only kills evil characters throughout the trilogy. I think you might as well include Luke in there too. He didn't know that he was only a projection on Crait and had every intention of killing him there, even after Luke's warning about striking him down in anger
I don't mean this as a hate post or anything; I did like this video, and Ben's my favourite ST character. Pretty high up on my list of favourite SW characters altogether. Just felt like I had to point out my disagreement on that particular thing

I really didn’t like the end they gave Ben. Killing him off and saying that he’s redeemed and that is his redemption arc is really a wasted opportunity imo. It is the easy way out and a real cop out. Real redemption is living, taking responsibility for your actions and atoning for your sins. It’s more meaningful that way. See Kenshin Himura of Rurouni Kenshin and Sasuke Uchiha of Naruto (for the anime peeps out there). Like Kylo, they committed terrible atrocities in their past but they took responsibility for their sins by dedicating the rest of their lives trying to make amends and doing good deeds as atonement. I always thought Kylo’s character was so much like Sasuke so i was hoping that his path to redemption would be similar to his. Too bad they just killed a character with so much potential and promise. His redemption arc after the fall of Snoke/Palpatine and the First Order would have been quite a story to tell. In fact, that would have made a good series kinda like Rurouni Kenshin which is all about how Kenshin, formerly known as Battosai (a samurai assassin during the Bakumatsu) tried to come to terms with his bloody past and lived his life opposite of his former self, helping people and keeping the peace. That is a good redemption arc. Ben should have lived and should have been given a chance for atonement. I dunno. His death just feels so rushed and hollow to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Your kind of grasping at straws here. We don’t know if old dude was innocent and Han Solo was a thief so you can even talk your way out of that. Ben solo died because he had nobody to go back to. If Ray excepted him the rest of the resistance like Finn and Po would not and want him killed anyway. Much more heroic to die in sacrifice for Juliet
