This is the only video that actually has helped in training her. I'll definitely be using your other videos to continue training her. 😊

My mom bought me a new puppy and I’ve been searching some tips because I’m only a beginner. I enjoy your videos and hopefully my new puppy and I will get to know each other soon (by training). : ))
I trained my grandmother's dog to know his name like this: Go to him and tell his name(in this case his name is Jambo) " Jambo. " and give him a treat. DO NOT give the treat to other person or eat it, then he will know " Jambo " is a direct word for something tasty and good. repeat repeat and repeat, after a time go without a treat and say " Jambo " he will look at you. Mission succeded

Awe Biggy is absolutely adorable and your training is awesome. Must admit though, that I couldn't stop laughing at your spok moment. Fantastic. Biggy was restless in your arms and you touch him with a spok like motion, nothing aggressive, and he just became so relaxed in your arms. Wonderful. Thanks so much😊
Hi there, Sweetheart Gaming! With enough consistency and some good timing (mentioned in the video), your pup can quickly learn that hearing their name is a really valuable thing! The key is to be consistent though. So try not to use his name unless you're working on training it. You can use less formal words, "here pup" or "pup pup" until he starts to have a reliable response to the name that you give him! Happy Training! ~Ken
My 5 month old Heinz57 seems to know her name, but like you, she puts the headphones on and has selective hearing. I'm guessing I've done something wrong. How do I right a wrong?
Hi there, Marty! It's important to train this exercise, without testing it. So you can work on getting that 100% reliable response to name, whether your pup is in a distracting environment or not. I would use something informal like "here" or another word, if you aren't sure what kind of response you'll get. By doing this, you can work on building successful repetitions by using the methods in this video! Hope this helps! ~Ken
Marty Epperly same my welsh collie is 18 months old and still doesn’t understand his name he does it in the house but the minute you get outside he gets extremely hipper

Spewed twice in the car back, had the runs last night, wont go today, but im extatic that when he needs to go, he whimpers, sniffs the corner of the room, gives it a scratch and waits. But he also already learned if he wants to in, if he jumps at the door handle from outside it opens the back door. Have to lock it from now on so he thinks that trick doesnt work. Going to be a handful this one
I’m getting a yorkie in August/September and this video really helped! We are an Italian family and we were big fans of the name bello which means either little boy, cute boy, or amazing boy.
The great part is you can use a few😉 All of our own dogs have their normal names, and every one has at least 2 short-form variations. Through repetition and consistency they can respond to all of them. For example, our Toy Poodle, Hippy Shake is called “Shakey”, “Shaker”, “Shakin’ Bacon” and “Tiny Terror” and she responds to all of them! 😆 I’m sure you’ll come up with the perfect name soon. I have found that whatever the name you end up with is, you’ll feel like it’s the perfect name in a very short amount of time! Have fun with the process. Happy Training! ~Ken
First time viewer. Loved your upbeat and commen sense approach. I ad a NSD Toller for 15 years. Smartest dog I've ever owned. I once counted his vocabulary.... roughly 200 words/phrases. I now have a Chessie. Of all my dogs ever, he is easily the dumbest dog I've ever owned. But he's still great and lots of fun. And he knows his name, if not much else. LOL
Quick question, how long should each step take? Should I slowly stretch it out and do maybe one step a day, or should i do the entire cycle in one day and repeat the cycle everyday?
Such a good question, Roman! Your progressions have nothing to do with the amount of time spent. It has everything to do with your puppy’s level of understanding. Once you feel like your puppy is “getting it” consistently, then move to the next progression. Some puppies may take a couple of days with a couple of sessions per day. Others may take a week with the same amount of daily training. It’s all about your puppy! Happy Training ~Ken
McCann Dog Training Thanks for the quick response! Another question, is it better if I focus on one thing to train at a time, or should I mix training? (For example, first I spend 10 minutes teaching my puppy it’s name, then 10 minutes of potty training, etc)
Another good question, Roman! That's a good strategy. It will keep things fun and will keep your puppy motivated to learn. And that is the ultimate goal. Specifically, with potty training, that's something that will present natural training opportunities throughout the day. You'll always be working on potty training with your supervision, and good management and great information. Having a reasonable schedule for your puppy and following the best practices will help on the potty training front. Do I need eye contact at the first stage of saying name then giving reward? Hi there, Nelson! For this exercise, I would use something that your puppy really loves. If they have a favorite treat then I would use something like that to really get them excited about responding to their name! Happy Training ~Ken
How do you eventually differentiate name from recall? My dog gets so excited about his name that we no longer use it around him unless it’s for recall. He has excellent recall though but I’d love to devalue his name a little bit so that I can use it without him expecting something amazing from me each time. At the same time, I don’t want to devalue his recall.
The way I trained the name was not as a recall (like in this video, where the dog is trained to come to you when you call their name). I trained it as the same as “look at me,” meaning give me your attention. Now when I say my dog’s name he looks at me, and I follow with any other command necessary.
Glad it was a helpful video! A reliable response to name is a really important skill to have with your dog, so make sure you are consistent with your expectations! Happy Training! ~Ken
