  • One of the skills that we teach our puppies really early in their lives is how to "drop it". That's why in this video, I'm going to show you how to teach your puppy to drop things. Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so it's a great skill to teach your young dog, to avoid disaster, but also to demonstrate some leadership for your young and impressionable puppy. It's a fairly simple process and as you'll see, your puppy will find this exercise to be lots of fun!

    Theoretically, I get it and like it. In reality, my pup just hangs on to the toy...even when it is completely still. He just hangs on and looks at me. So what do you do to get him to drop it initially?
    In the past, I would use food to tempt him to drop it...and then after a couple of successful drops, I would then use your method of verbal cue, correct action then reward.
    But at the next session, we were back to square 1 :|
    I also tried the suggestion from your other video (swapping toys) - but puppy got SUPER DUPER excited and hyped and lost all focus.

    Is there a way to get a dog to respond to one parent well if the other is still old school yelling "DROP IT!!! DROP IT DROP IT!" I work for hours training my Aussie positively exactly with this method. He responds during training, and often when I have him out at an empty park. But, if my husband is anywhere around, forget it! If I DO get him to come, he can smell if there is food on me or not and will not let go if no food. Or will let go and just attacks my pocket or my hand. My husband thinks I overtreat. He will even start yelling and grabbing if the dog doesn't respond to me immediately (as if he is supporting my command?)
    Is it at all possible to teach him to recognize my voice and obey immediately like we practice? I don't think my husband will ever get on board. But, if I can get him to drop right away from my command, my husband won't step in.
    Help!

    I’m wondering what other items to use to start generalizing the behavior. One of the issues I’m having with my 4 month old golden is an interest in shoes. So far he hasn’t been destructive (because he’s watched and caught) and the easiest solution it to avoid the issue completely by picking them up every time. But accidents happen and I don’t really want to use a shoe to proof the behavior on purpose in case he starts to see them as toys.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 роки тому

      Hi there, DScritchy! You should spend some time teaching your dog to "leave it" with items like shoes. You're making a great choice to not leave anything for your dog to chew when you can't supervise, but it's a good idea to show your pup that shoes are off limits when it comes to chewing. We have a video that will show you how to teach your dog to "leave it". Remember, supervision is key and when you have time to supervise, you have time to train! Love it! My puppy (7 month old Aussie) has a great “out” command when our hand is on the toy (or whatever’s in his mouth). He’s pretty good about not playing keep away when we’re playing fetch inside, but LOVES to play keep away if we’re playing fetch outside with a tennis ball. I’ve seen Kayl’s video about how to get your dog to love to bring the toy back to you, but I’m wondering if you guys have any other tips regarding curbing some of the “keep away” behavior, considering it seems fairly situational. Thanks!

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  4 роки тому +2

      Great question, Kristen! Make sure you have control of either your dog or the toy if you have any question about them being successful. Even if they’re reliable “most of the time” they can always drag a leash or the toy can be attached to the line so you can eliminate the game of keep away! Thanks for watching ~Ken

    I'm 50 and have had 3 dobermans and 2 german shepherds in my life. Easy to train if you're just calm and quiet. But now I have a 2 kg mix between barracuda /chainsaw and Jeffrey Dahmer. I tried the pedagogical way but after a month I had to go 1950s style with her. I pinched her nose right away and it took 1 day to stop biting me. Not 2 sec later. Only 4 months old but her biting caused infections and ripped clothes. I hate all kinds of physical punishment. Really do. But to be frustrated and angry with a family member that they are is only torture in the long run. Now we snuggle all the time and she never distrust me. She's with me all the time and I love her so ❤️ I had to think about what would happen in the long run if I didn't put a stop to it.

    if a puppy has stolen something and runs away with it, me calling "drop it" doesn't work - understandably, because me chasing after him is much more fun! How can I get him to release it from across the room? Especially if he has managed to get something that could be dangerous, like a hair clip?

    • @afterdeth
      @afterdeth 3 роки тому +9

      Prevent him from getting it in the first place. Manage his environment more. Don't ever play chase with him if he had something in his mouth. Do frequent dedicated training sessions for "drop it" and eventually you'll be able to ask him to do it at a distance, one he's got a positive reinforcement history with that command. Don't try asking him to do it before he's ready and then get frustrated and just repeatedly shout the command, that'll devalue the command. Our puppy only learned a reliable "drop" from a distance at like 8 months old

    I have a year and a half old dog and we are working on the "drop it" command. He has a habit of tugging on his leash whenever he is bored while on a walk. Is the "drop it" command appropriate for this behavior? He knows the word leave it, but he is exhibiting playing behavior at times.

    Any suggestions for an older puppy that has a perfect 'drop it' with all toys (even when very excited!) but immediately swallows any socks/gloves that he finds when off-lead on walks. I've been wondering about telling him 'take it' and then training 'drop it' with a sock at home, but would it be bad to reinforce holding socks at all? Thank you for the great video though!

      I'm not sure if this is the correct way to do it, but I was noticing the same thing. So we go on "walks" in the back yard and I purposefully let him find something interesting that's not something I gave him (a stick, etc). And I have my treat ready (when he's finally forgotten I have them in my pocket because the outside is more interesting). I say "leave it" he thinks abut it and drops the stick so I give him the treat. Not 100% there yet, but it's hard to fabricate the "unscripted" distractions.
      Funny enough, he's spit out 2 of his baby teeth after I said "leave it" since I saw him chewing on something! They just fell out in his mouth and he was playing with them!

      all gravey Try using a treat that doesn't smell so good. My puppy went crazy when I used her yummy smelling kibble, so I switched to cheese and little tiny cubes and it worked like a charm she still knew I had the cheese but wasn't as crazy about it and she learned very quickly, as I said in my comment in one session she got it

      all gravey but she has to play with toys on her own right? If she does. As she is playing you jump on a start a training session while she is engaged with the toy. You have to just keep doing it and one day it clicks.

    I think the biggest mistake is going to fast with your puppy. Taking things away is a lot harder than waiting till the right age to give things or allow behaviors. If you think your dog is so smart and can skip steps or jump ahead, you will regret it when you are trying to take that freedom or whatever away, they will use those smarts to get themselves in trouble.

      My puppy border collie would drop a ball and stare at it, waiting for me to throw it, but then bit my hands when i reached for it.
      What i did was say "leave it" when she was staring, wait a few seconds then say "yes, good girl" and then repeat the same thing as i reached for it. It took a few sessions for her to get the idea, but now she gets it and doesnt bite me when i reach for it and say leave it.
      Hope this helps and wasnt too confusing. 😅

    I feel like every pup are different when it comes to listening. While some treats work with my 16 week Lab like for potty training and walking besides me. Other commands I feel like she understands more with the tone or emotion of my voice. I use “let it go” for her to drop her toy and the word “go” I do a low-long sounding gooooo and she starts loosening up her toy. And for her to come I do a happy perky voice and she hurries up to me right away!

    Our problem is that Lucy is very hyper all the time and constantly biting anything in her reach, except her toys. We’ve got a variety of toys, bones/antlers, etc and she shows no interest in tug of war at least not for more than a few seconds and then she is on to something else. The biggest issue is her biting our pants, shoes, feet/ankles all the time.. how does this factor into training?

    • @fhcreates
      @fhcreates 3 роки тому

      Have her restricted from you for example in a play pen. Stop play when you can’t redirect the biting. She will quickly get the message. Biting means play is stopped

    If you train your dog with treats. Once you see that they have learn the command you have to immediately start leaning them off the treats while reinforcing the command during daily life. Do this with every command. Also train your dog on your walks. Make him sit, Platz. And anything else you want. That is how you get your so well trained

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 4 роки тому +2

      You've not tried hard enough. Every dog will let go eventually. The other day I had to hold a tug steady and clamp the dog down to stop him ragging and waited some 15 minutes before he gave it up. It was a high drive Patterdale terrier. It only took 10 minutes on the second rep and by the 10th rep he was dropping on cue.

      My dog growls too but some do, sometimes food doesn't work! My dog is food and toy motivated and wouldn't give up the toy for food, but she gave the toy up completely when she figured out she'd get another throw. Use two balls (identical so she doesnt resource one over the other), give whatever command you use "leave" "drop" or the one I use (which is drop and leave combined) is "out", and as soon as he drops it then you chuck the other toy as his reward and continue to do so until he learns! Have treats on you so when you take the toys away give him a "done" or "enough" and treat him so having them taken away isnt a horrible thing and he then understands that second command too

    Nice video! One question: How long does it take to learn this to your puppy?

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  5 років тому +2

      Hi there, Anouks! It's entirely dependent on your puppy. Practice this a couple of times every day. Very quickly you'll start to see your puppy anticipating that food. When you see them dropping the toy immediately, make a big deal about it! They will have so much fun, and find so much reward in the process that they're likely to drop it quickly again the next time! Have fun with this exercise, and Happy Training! ~Ken

      Hi there! My best advice is to keep your dogs separated and to seek the help of a qualified professional behaviorist. I won’t be able to give you specific enough advice here in the UA-cam comments section. Do a search for a behaviorist and see if you can get some recommendations from your vet for someone who can help you through this issue. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. Thanks for watching! ~Ken

    Just found this site , and thank goodness I have . It works for older dogs as well, My 3 year old lab is a pain when we are out and will not drop her ball before going into the river for a swim hence I lose about 3/4 balls a week, or I did. After watching this we played it and home , and after 2 days she got it, oh joy I will save so much on tennis balls now Thank you.

    Using a food reward does not work with a dog as intelligent as an Airedale. He is going to persistently grab stuff so that he gets a reward for dropping it, reinforcing bad behaviour. Playing with a pull toy, the Airedale's jaws are so powerful that unless he wants to let go it is not going to release, the wing will come off the retrieve duck. This is the 'kill the rat' game and you will have to let go eventually unless you want your wrist sprained. To get the sock/slipper/phone back, command "drop" and gently and calmly, without yelling which excites the dog, take the object out of his mouth pushing on his incisors (which are sensitive to pressure) to open, "drop" is taught by repetition. He will give it to you - but no reward, so that he knows it was a bad thing to do. Airedales copy and have a fantastic sense of smell, so anything you have handled is fair game. Airedales learn very quickly, often first go, but they don't always obey

    Advice for when the dog gets something that isn't their toy. Like, a chicken bone from a plate, or food they found in the dog park? My dog will drop her toys. But when she found what I think was good like beef in the dog park she refused to stop it and ran off with it. And my mom dropped a chicken bone and my dog got it and refused to drop it or open her mouth.

    I am having a few small issues with my 14 week old, she now knows sit, down, and she does react to "up" or "off" if I say it on the sofa where I train her but getting her to drop things, or me eating food is a nightmare as well as getting her to lie down and stay which is a pain as I work from home and the only thing that slightly works is to hug her with one arm whilst I am typing/on phone for work which gives me a sore arm and slows my work as well as doesn't treat the problem. I am not worried about giving them treats, its just I notice when I give treats she goes to toilet more and she isn't properly toilet trained yet so its bad enough rushing to her when she decides to go indoors without adding to that worry!
