The boxing part can only be appreciated if you are really good at chess and never seen a boxing match.
It’s also only practicable if both of them aren’t experienced enough at boxing. I tried chessboxing with friends that have the same boxing experience and chess skill. What we found out is that just one good hit will incapacitate you enough to loose at each chess game.
Or two very good boxers as well@@lordinquisitor6651
Hikaru is right that none of these chess boxers would even have a chance against any decent amateur boxer. Everyone was awful but it was entertaining to watch.
yeah the sport would have to be real boxers that learn chess vs the other way around, unless kids grow up doing both (they wont!)
@@JackMott why not? Tons of people (kids included) play chess outside of the ring
@@justrandomthings8158 there is a wide range in any activity from doing it (3 hours a week casually), to professional level training (usually around 20 hours a week or more of consistent focused structured training). Well the opponent could just stall in the first round of chess until you get to the boxing. Churdley vs Myth was like 3 moves in before the first boxing round. And 3 move check mate seems impossible.

Magnus might be willing to do it for 10mill.
she refused to take a fighting position after the break which caused the ref to start a third count (right or wrong on his part this occured) and should have resulted in a loss. no different than a repetition draw.
refusing to fight in boxing is a submission, on chess language it is resignation.
What? How is that a repetition draw? You just stated it’s a loss
@@alekhinesgun9997 (well in Chinese chess repetitions would result in warning & loss 🤷♂️)
@@alekhinesgun9997 the statement ment that the movement itself caused a result to occur and by the position taken by the ref and the fighter (same as the position of a board being in a repetitious position) the game is called for what it is
andrea was going to be forcibly checkmated and stalled the chess for another chance at boxing so idk how this is any different
I thought the ref was literally on Dina's payroll. Not only did he stop and look around and wait before even starting the 8 counts, killing time, he would step in between the fighters during the fight so that Andrea would have to go around him to get to Dina. He also said after the fight that when Dina was using the ropes for support, it should not have even been a count but called instantly for Andrea. At least it was semi-corrected after the fight and Andrea got the belt. Dina got one too, so only thing is to get a better ref next time.
I believe he was trying to make sure he can separate them as Andrea was very aggressive but they kinda collided a lot meaning not a lot of hits actually made it to their bodies or head it went behind and around and was against rules
So he had to separate them before continuing
Also Andrea seemed very eager to fight so he wanted to make sure she stayed away and waited till he was done the count cause she seemed to forget to go to the other side of the ring and wanted to go straight into boxing which would mean more separations
I could be wrong tho but they definitely need another ref next time
They had another ref but he most likely took a break
At least both participants got a belt
@@ChrisStuart911 definitely wrong.. that ref stole at least 30 seconds from Andreas fight time

I’ve been in some form of combat for 20 years plus, and two months of chess about a 1200 elo. Hikaru is right about this sport should never have actual boxers, this was way more entertaining and safer. We should just give Hugs and Botez the titles and not let them beat up any more chess players 😂.
@@aDiamonds90 She is a chess player and is rated 1800-2000 elo her form wasn't even good for boxing its just that her stamina from workout out and doing lots of cardio paid off.
@Prison Mike She was up against an opponent who was way better than her at chess, ofc she had to lean towards boxing. Garbage take
@Prison Mike dumb child, L take
Prison Mike, “Bad Bishop” was talking mad trash 😂 saying she was gonna make Andrea’s face so bad that she would have to resort to podcasts. The ref must have hooked up with Bad Bishop or something because that boxing officiating was fucking cringe.
@Prison Mike yah, Andrea going hard on boxing was, in part, because Dina trash talked prior to the match about how badly she was going to beat Andrea in boxing specifically. She said that when she was done with Andrea, Andrea would have to take up podcasting (ie. Her face would be too disfigured for UA-cam). Andrea proceeding to massacre her in boxing was retribution for the trash talk, as much as it was a necessity given the elo gap.
I'm betting Hikaru can checkmate a professional boxer in fewer seconds than a professional boxer could knock Hikaru out.
I’ll take you on that bet. $1000000
but the boxer could just stall
The boxer would just have to play an extremely safe opening slowly. And then it’s a win

Mud-wrestling would be healthier AND hotter. Just imagine Hikaru and Magnus rolling around.
A standing eight count, also known as a protection count, is a boxing judgment call made by a referee during a bout. When invoked, the referee stops the action and counts to eight. During that time, the referee will determine if the boxer can continue.

@@lubo1358 One of FIDE's former presidents was talking about pushing to make Chessboxing an olympic event back in the early 2010s. And it's been around as a sport for about 20 years now. It's taken pretty seriously by those who actually do it competitively.
What do you mean? Chess is a game that simulates Warfare , Anybody who does warfare , has to learn some form of "chess like" game or activity.
Not that different to Football , they all base their game on tactics boards and gameplan boards.
Thank you for saying it, Hikaru. Yeah, a person can be fit and strong, but if they don't know how to fight they aren't going to learn overnight. UA-cam is full of examples of tough guys off the street getting demolished by ordinary boxers who have trained the fundamentals for years. The point is the same on the chess side. A person can be highly intelligent and good at puzzles, but an average chess newbie isn't going to learn to beat a 1600-level player overnight no matter how hard they study.
It actually doesn't make any sense that the clock don't stop when the ref STOPS the match. It even called "stoppage". So the timer should be stopped too.
As a sport ChessBoxing can actually grow, as all-around. Because it requires physical and mental strength. And it fun to watch both on chess and boxing. But rules should be corrected.
Pretty sure that's a normal boxing rule, tho I may be wrong
@@nine9nine9 I don't how it is in boxing, but in UFC clock stops when ref stops the match. I would be surprised if in boxing it isn't a thing. Because time is only for boxing, and when ref stops the match, there is no boxing, so it's unfair, because every second is important.
I would give my left arm to see Hikaru chess box
The reff is supposed too stop the fight if they deem a fighter is unable too defend themselves, for any reason. It's a safety thing.
Chessboxing (at least as far as now) is meant for hobbyists. I would have lots of fun, because I enjoy and practice both chess and boxing, but it's definitely not meant for professionals in either category, unless it's for fun
Dont get meme events like Ludwig's confused with actual sanctioned chess boxing. The current minimum requirements to fight in a Chess Boxing Global event include an Elo rating of 1,600 and a record of at least fifty amateur bouts fought in boxing or another similar martial art. That's hardly hobbyist levels of experience.
That one dude at the end, the tall black guy going against white guy with dyed hair... He was the only one with any snap on his punches, but he still had no defensive capability.
the boxing was a bit like watching roberto duran chasing sugar ray leonard. no mas, no mas.
Didn't expect Aman or Andrea to have that much fight in them. Looking at stature, you'd bet money on Lawrence because he was taller and had the reach. I thought it was goofy Andrea posing in boxing gear, but she took serious and gave Dina more than she could handle boxing.
In Boxing the ref can do a stoppage which is a standing eight count if the fighter isn't defending thenselves intelligently. Three standing eight counts is an automatic win for the other fighter. When the third stoppage occurred the fight was over no count was needed. Andrea won.
glad hikaru visually noticed the skill gap between people that want to box and people that actually box
Where are these videos coming from? Isn't hikaru in Kazakhstan playing that world blitz chess?
I can See epic duel with GM Hikaru and Magnus Carlsen in chess boxing this is a fight legendary !!!
Magnus would clobber him in both. 😂
Hikaru on jerma: “You’re not that guy pal”
Hikaru knowing so little about boxing does take a little away from his chess game lol.
A stoppage would be a knock down or a standing 8 count, If a player has no time on their own clock they automatically lose.
Gotham out here with the fire Yu-Gi-Oh reference
I seem to recall that former world champion Lenox Lewis was a chess player though I dont know to what standard. Maybe his take woud be interesting?
I'd be very curious to see Botez fight someone more athletic, since she clearly way outclassed Dina in the boxing section. I want to know if Botez is actually good at fighting or if she only appears good by fighting someone who's been to a boxing gym like five times in her life.
She doesnt even appear good what ate you talking about. Like you know anything about boxing :D
No, she's not good. She's been practising boxing for, what, a couple of months now? No one's good in that amount of time.
@@mielipuolisiili7240 she’s definitely not good, but she also doesn’t look very athletically gifted. So stiff with no fluidity. The only positive is she kind of kept her hands up
Andrea has only been to a boxing gym like five times in her life. If she really wanted to be a boxer, she might be fairly good. She's got the energy and learned a lot quickly. But whatever, this is all just a fun event. People are taking it all way too seriously.
@@mielipuolisiili7240 she's been practicing only for a month.
The ref kept getting involved way too much.
they fought for like 25s in that last round. It was ridiculous.
Hikaru is right, the average adult between 20-40 years old would stand less than 1 minute against a real boxer, less than 30 seconds even.
Also this fight was a shame, Andrea got robbed, she destroyed Dina. The referee did his job very poorly.
how did the referee did his job poorly
@@DionMango He kept stopping the fight after one punch from Andrea, which took time off the clock for nothing.
@@DionMango stepping in to separate a grapple, when there was no grapple, did take time off the clock. Had he only separated for actual grapple, and for standing counts, that last standing count may have been the boxing win. Although, I am sure he was doing what he was trained to do. No salt toward him, just something to consider going forward.
he later apologized and Ludwig said they both win
Ludwig later gave them both the win because of the referee situation
The boxer skills will be always more beneficial in that type of event.
The problem is a good boxer don't need to even know how to pieces goes to win chessboxing matchup against top chess players. Because you can always steel a clock for at least 2 rounds of boxing so if you can win by these 2 rounds, you don't need to even touch pieces.
If a chess player does a match with a boxer, whatever comes first may decide who wins it (assuming the boxer isn't that good). Assuming there's no stalling. The boxer could stall in the chess round and the chess player could just focus on running and dodging in the boxing.
Unless the chess is first and 2mins altogether, that could be fun. Then the chess player might have an edge
There is no stalling punches flying your way
@@sada0101 but there is stalling in clinching/running
Very dynamic sport.
It creates moments in wich you have to go all in with boxing (boxing can become very static and slow) and there is also waiting tactics like we saw in these match. 10/10 sport
look stupid
normally there is a limitation to stalling, I think you have to make a move in 15s or sth like that
Lmao just pretending boxing isn't basically always super slow now a days

I think it would be interesting boxer has to survive first chess round chess player has to win first or survive second. Have to add a time for the boxer if he doesn't move otherwise just stall until the second then put them in a coma.
Hikaru, you should show up in some new movie in a Vegas or bar scene as a random extra who has a part where you say you and do you in a hilarious way, but maybe have like .. idk just get in a movie already son, you're a legend who needs more spots
what he said at the start is so true
The only rules that would fit its by giving the player moves with word, like (kG4 bF3) something like that while at the sametime do boxing.
Ps: with 20 seconds every moves and illegal moves cause disqualified from the game.

What would be better than boxing would be slap fighting!
I wish there was an eval bar for the striking 😂😂

I think Andrea is ready to fight against Canelo Alvarez.
Chess and boxing are my favorite...well MMA but I would never do MMA but have kickboxed before. The sweet sciences
Hikaru only fights if he is drunk at a party, screaming " I do not entertain".
This is so funny too me 💀 like oh you took my queen? Take theze hands👊🏽👊🏽
Now we need to do professional boxers learning chess, and doing chess boxing
I love that Hikaru THINKS he’s making a hot take
I wanna see Hikaru vs Magnus in chess boxing
HAHAHA goddamn, something I never imagined seeing was andrea botez throwing hands on a ring. What the fuck is going on
Not sure why people want to see people strike each other in the brain or want to pursue it. If it's people who dedicated their whole life to combat hitting each other that's one thing, but wanting to see amateurs in a mental field get just good enough to accidentally cause mild brain damage is not for me.
How long are players allowed to stall in the chess game? Of course at some point they are going to run out of times, but a boxer might get 2 rounds of boxing without any threat of defeat on the chess board, by not moving anything. If you are able to knock someone out in two rounds, you don't need any chess.
Chess needs and I say it needs a fight/ppv format strictly for chess not boxing.
very different style of video from anna, but i do like this.
In a regular boxing match or any combat sport a stoppage is when the count starts. Now here's the thing, in regular combat sports when a stoppage occurs the actual round clock is also stopped. And this was the huge mistake they made in this sport, they never stopped the clock. So do the math on this, these rounds are only 2 minutes, that's 120 seconds, out of that 120 seconds a stoppage is 8 seconds a piece, which between the ref being slow and general movement ends up being 10 seconds. So now you have to get 3 of these stoppages in the round OR 4 in the entire match. So basically out of the 120 seconds 30 seconds would be stoppages alone, and these idiots let the clock keep running down.
So what chess rating would an amateur boxer need to achieve to be able to win the world chessboxing title?
According to Wiki: "The current minimum requirements to fight in a Chess Boxing Global event include an Elo rating of 1,600 and a record of at least fifty amateur bouts fought in boxing or another similar martial art."
Now, obviously that doesn't apply for meme events and exhibition bouts like Ludwig's event. But if you wanted to be the Chessboxing champ in an official capacity, them's the rules.
As a 1200 I would dominate chess boxing. The boxing part is ridiculous.

The rules should be modified so that the boxing round starts when the two players have BOTH used X amount of time.
This way, a very good player stands a chance against a very good boxer if he plays very fast, he can mate him in the first chess round
Hikaru Nakamura vs Eric Hansen. Make it happen.
-Real talk at 6:20 😂😂😂😂😂

if this event ever happens again they need real officiating, you can see the ref starts to count the 3rd standing 8 count at the end of the last boxing round. Should have been a win for Botez. in boxing a standing 8 count is treated the same as a knockdown, so in other words imagine if at the end of that last boxing round botez actually knocked her down, it would be an instant win for botez. The second the ref started counting the match should have been over.
The chess board should be set up outside the ring

Right this competition requires boxers that happen to play chess.
We are talking about years of training vs 2-6 months of training
It's actually rare to understand that non fighters would do very poorly against trained fighters - for some reason people think they can fight way better than what's realistic which Hikaru gets
She missed the mate on purpose to keep boxing.
that forced mate in one was pretty obvious, but after boxing, maybe not.
