I wonder if it’s jealousy? It does suck that a Super GM has found a way to make a living off of streaming which has in turn seemingly elevated his play cause he no longer has the financial burden weighing on him to win.
The way your average online player cheats, is not the same way a GM would cheat. The average cheater online is asking the engine to tell them what square to move what piece. This is incredibly slow, and easy to catch. All a GM needs is an indication in critical positions that the position is good, or to keep it consistent throughout the game, also indicating on equal positions to draw. This would cut down the time dramatically. I'm not an expert in Chess cheating, but I would imagine a separate computer used solely for processing positions from older Chess engines could do this in under 3 seconds. Do I think Hikaru is doing this? No. Why? Because I give everybody the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. Coincidences are not proof. If correlation was causation, every conspiracy theory would be true. The 45.5/46 farming lower rated players is not even interesting let alone proof.

Playing online is always different than OTB. It's definitely more comfortable at home, in your own chair, and set up. OTB chess is always a little more nerve wracking and you do move slower when having to reach for the pieces.
Maybe it’s just me, but I read that tweet like Nepo wasn’t agreeing with kramnik… seemed like he was saying kramnik is right to be concerned with cheating but this is not the battle to be fought (because he’s obviously wrong). And also meme-ing on kramnik by referring to him as some self proclaimed vigilante. I could be 100% wrong tho
@@ultrafly100 Kramniks ego wouldnt allow him after all that getting obliterated by Hikaru. He looses his mind all the time when getting flagged OTB and Online. - Kramnik would be a patient in an asylum after that match lol
I can imagine the reasoning behind Kramnik's disbelief, but there is a 300 point difference between the players. Taking shortcuts in words: 2900s are very good players themselves, but are not on the level of a 3200, especially not if that 3200 is hammering out blitz games every day and has built up such a routine and repertoire, that it dwarfs the 2900s who can never achieve it at that level. Even though they themselves can built up a routine that dwarfs 2500s if they are fanatic enough. But knowing that you can achieve the very top might be an extra motivation, and a 2900 does not have the inclination to think that he/she can reach the very top. In short: comparions cannot be made purely on numbers; position and achievable goals should be taken into account.
the rating system itself can't even be used as a marker for blitz chess because the rating applies to so many different time controls... hikaru could be 300 points over someone on increment and 400 points over the same person without increment you wouldnt be able to disguinsh based on a combined rating if one players plays mainly one over the other
a couple "friends" from work are like 1200 on blitz but probably like 800 or less over the board... most of the online blitz in the lower elo is just anxiety control, being calm or just not really worried in general. the same thing applies to the higher elos as well, some really good players kinda suck at blitz because its just nerve wracking... whereas some people just literally dont care... like Hikaru... he is an expert at not caring
I've heard Hikaru is the top player whom most gm's dislike so i believe this is why many said hes cheating cause they dont like him but deep in their souls they know how good he is at online chess but they wish he wasnt... and im not a fan of hikaru i will never think hes cheating he has good skills with the mouse way better than any other top gm, thats it.
i really want standupmaths to review this whole debacle. What kramnik did (and what Eric did, essentially) is basically called a "sampling bias" which is covered by Matt Parker of standupmaths when Dream's minecraft speedrun drama happened. We have to look at hikaru's 51 thousand games (and maybe distill it down to only the game mode in question) and account for all of them, and calculate the possibility of him having a run of 45 wins among the thousands of games he's played. At that point we would have something that is statistically sound to put blame on, if there's any.
Never accuse a GM the likes of Hikaru of cheating without actual proof. It’s in poor taste and we all know Hikaru doesn’t need to cheat. Hikaru is true elite class as a player and a person.
These accusations are obviously laughable but didn't Hikaru say the exact same thing about Hans; that players in event have talked about him possibly cheating and used that as proof that Hans cheated OTB? How the tables have turned.
Probability is an strange animal. Lets say the rating difference suggest H has a 90% chance at winning against a random player. Then the probability of H winning 44 in a row is less than 1 % But as soon as your not playing 44 random players but just a few you can throw that calculation out of the window. Different players have different playing style that can be a good or bad match. There may be a prehistory of intimidation and fear. So perhaps the chance of H winning may be 95 %. This subjective probability may come closer to the truth the the one derived from ELO diff. If this is the case then the probability of winning all games jumps to more then 10%. Lets assume that we have a tilt factor as well. So whe H has won three games in a row the probability goes up to 97%. Then we are not looking at a proposterous result anymore. People use statistics too casual sometimes.
That's true. I can beat my friends who have are rated lower than me by like 300 elo in 30 consecutive games. But if I played 30 games against 30 random players rated 300 elo below me, I'd probably lose a couple.
But also, let's say the rating difference suggests that H has a 90% chance of winning against a random player. You're right that the probability of winning 44 in a row is less than 1%. But if someone has played, say, one thousand games (and Hikaru has played easily that), the probability of such a streak appearing somewhere in one thousand games is 62%!
Frankly my first interpretation of Ian´s Tweet, "He is the hero gotham deserves, but not the one we need right now", was that he was refering to Kramnik, not Hikaru. I saw it as : Kramnik is what we need (or deserve) to fight cheating, but not what we need right now (because right now we dont need this sort of un-fundamented accusations against people like hikaru). But i could be wrong
@16:30 - The fact that we all now know that the word "interesting" means "he may be cheating" means that using the word "interesting" from now on is a *DIRECT* accusation of cheating.
If I learned that Hikaru does cheat, then I would have to question everything I ever thought I knew. Incredible players have incredible stats, and his brilliance, is proven over and again on stream at a pace that couldn't even allow for cheating.
Another possibility is that the ratings aren't very accurate. I think in these cases, Hikaru also found some players who were a bit overrated online, and managed to farm them, also probably using the psychological advantage of being a GM. It might be a little unfair, but its not cheating. But maybe the rating system does need to be reformed a bit.
the rating system is fine. fluctuations are normal. it's accurate over the long run; there's not really any good way to avoid peaks and valleys (not to mention, what would be the point...)
It wasnt even that special. There was like a 5% chance of hikaru pulling it off. So when you think in terms of 1000s of games he plays its like 50/50 something like this will happen.
Hikaru doesnt need to do this. Hikaru's track record has been on live in front of everyone since basically what...like...'94? '95? Hikaru you are worth more than this.
he is doing it because he knows people love drama. he gets to make entertaining content with it while also showing how he isn't cheating. tbh i am quite entertained.

I know Eric's and Hikaru's relationship is professional and not friendship, but hearing Eric talk at 1.5 speed and sound like a normal person is entertaining haha
Hikaru hides all of his chess moves in his brain.
It's really funny seeing Hikki being defended by Eric. Two of my favorite GMs of all time. It is always fun watching them compete against each other, but this video and Eric's video were a change of pace.
So chess grandmasters are essentially just gamers... "damn he shot me so quickly, I didn't even see him, cheater"
"he doesn't have a brain, he lost it" ~Nakaru Hikamura
Playing online is always different than OTB. It's definitely more comfortable at home, in your own chair, and set up. OTB chess is always a little more nerve wracking and you do move slower when having to reach for the pieces.
yeah and you can also draw arrows like Hikaru does they help at thinking faster i think, also the 2D perspective is easier to overlook than OTB
Also there’s premoves and flagging in equal positions which also have to be taken into account.
@@faznaz7455 @StrAniG09 yep both of you bring good points. The different perspective is huge, and hikaru is THE premover.
Hikaru cheating? I didn't even know he had a BF/GF.
Nepo's tweet referencing the dark night is literally just him saying that Kramnig is "speaking facts!!" but that no one is ready to hear it yet.
Even the actual cheaters got confused on this one.
Hikaru should challenge Kramnik to an over the board high security blitz tourney. I’ll bet Hikaru would beat him 46 times in a row
That would be hilarious lol
@@ultrafly100 Kramniks ego wouldnt allow him after all that getting obliterated by Hikaru. He looses his mind all the time when getting flagged OTB and Online.
- Kramnik would be a patient in an asylum after that match lol
Play naked and isolated, thats the way
I dont think hikaru could win more than 5 times in a row. But maybe...
I mean Hikaru would beat him but no where close to 46 times lmao. Kramnik is still the 26th ranked Blitz player lol he not some scrub
Hikaru dressed like an easytech at staples
I love how Eric and Hikaru went from online beef to now he is defending him. Good sportsmanship.
the rating system itself can't even be used as a marker for blitz chess because the rating applies to so many different time controls... hikaru could be 300 points over someone on increment and 400 points over the same person without increment you wouldnt be able to disguinsh based on a combined rating if one players plays mainly one over the other
Nonetheless, being so good at chess to the point a GM thinks you're cheating is the ultimate flex.
a couple "friends" from work are like 1200 on blitz but probably like 800 or less over the board... most of the online blitz in the lower elo is just anxiety control, being calm or just not really worried in general. the same thing applies to the higher elos as well, some really good players kinda suck at blitz because its just nerve wracking... whereas some people just literally dont care... like Hikaru... he is an expert at not caring
former World champion lmao
@@nassimbenhenni6746Not just a GM, literal former World Champ
Hikaru's not cheating, period.
Hikaru is clearly an alien who has installed stockfish into his brain that only activates when looking at the ceiling. That is cheating.

Hikaru is the annoying "mothers-best-friends-son" for most of them. Better at chess, better at life. People need to touch grass more often.
Kramnik being a merchant banker, hikaru chasing that bank 🎉
Hikaru living a double life as a jpop star 😮
i really want standupmaths to review this whole debacle.
At that point we would have something that is statistically sound to put blame on, if there's any.
i drank a litre of motor oil yesterday
Interesting
Hikaru: It's still slow lets put it at 100x speed
Never accuse a GM the likes of Hikaru of cheating without actual proof. It’s in poor taste and we all know Hikaru doesn’t need to cheat. Hikaru is true elite class as a player and a person.
These accusations are obviously laughable but didn't Hikaru say the exact same thing about Hans; that players in event have talked about him possibly cheating and used that as proof that Hans cheated OTB? How the tables have turned.
Bro is so good at chess that the former world champion accused him of cheating.
He said 'I think it's natty' LMFAO
Probability is an strange animal. Lets say the rating difference suggest H has a 90% chance at winning against a random player. Then the probability of H winning 44 in a row is less than 1 %
But as soon as your not playing 44 random players but just a few you can throw that calculation out of the window.
He literally just cherry-picked a small sample size to skew results, like an average idiot as opposed to a former world chess champ.
0:40 why did that "Yayyy" effect come as soon as he said that?😭😭 Was it intentional or coincidence?😭
Any doubts about Hikaru should be dispelled by seeing him do puzzle rush. That shit is straight up insane
Well thanks for explaning the obvious that anyone here understands besides Hikaru .
Great to hear Hikaru praising Danya
@16:30 - The fact that we all now know that the word "interesting" means "he may be cheating" means that using the word "interesting" from now on is a *DIRECT* accusation of cheating.
If I learned that Hikaru does cheat, then I would have to question everything I ever thought I knew. Incredible players have incredible stats, and his brilliance, is proven over and again on stream at a pace that couldn't even allow for cheating.
"That doesn't look like me"
Yea it does
Kramnik needs a friend. Maybe we could all pitch in and buy him a puppy.
Proof that Eric only views Hikky as a rival not an enemy.
When a former world champion thinks you’re cheating, that’s a massive compliment
The one thing I'm still trying to figure out is, how on earth did Eric not lose his place counting when he scrolled up??
Probably on accuracy and move count
Or you just know the name of the opponent you counted last 🤷🏽♂️
@@mofe620he only played like 3 different people during the 45.5 streak
You are literally nobody in chess if you have never been accused of cheating by Kramnik.
Maybe Kramnik doesn’t understand the meme of Hikaru’s computer in the ceiling and thinks it’s really a computer up there 😄
