    Some notes here:
Escaflowne had two types of humanoid mechas, the Melefs (relatively small) and the Guymelefs (larger than the Melef).
Escaflowne, Scherezade, and most Guymelefs were some sort of (closed loop?) steam machines, with the heat provided by the energists in their bodies, those are the big jewels usually found on the chest or shoulders. As I understand it, the moving bronze discs represent internal geared transmissions (like the ones found in cars) connecting and amplifying the movements from the pilot to drive the limbs. The Escaflowne on top of that, is transformable.
The exception to the mechanical Guymelef are the ones produced by Zaibach, which operated through the displacement of some sort of pressurized liquid, which can be condensed into metal shapes like swords, shields, tentacles, and such.
Escaflowne, due to being situated in an alternate mystical world, would often show technologies that were constructed on elements that would seem magical to us, like the energists, naturally levitating rocks, lightweight and strong alloys, etc.

@@wolfvash22 From the art books and other supplementary animation materials. The specific part about the pressure in the Zaibach Guymelefs is from one of the episodes, where a pilot called Miguel Labariel mentions there is enough pressure in his damaged mech to move it, plus observing that every time a Zaibach unit is destroyed, there are no mechanisms inside, mostly liquids. Also, you can see how Dilandau's unit fills and surrounds him with liquid when he gets in.

@@solarydays No. No studio will do it. The anime industry is currently screwed, underpaid and overloaded animators work their asses off because the studios are focused in mass production of series to promote dumb mangas rather than creating original and high-quality works, or at least doing proper adaptations of high-quality mangas / novels. This is why every year we have multiple times the amount of anime series we got in the old years, but with lower budget for each one and everything done in a hurry-up. So, not only we most commonly see cheap animation based on lazy CGI and with digital colouring (among other things that make the animation look totally different), but also narrative messes. Exceptions to the rule are very, very few: high-quality animations almost always have horrible narratives and proper narratives usually have low-quality animation. Pretty disapointing considering how many more technologycal resources there are in present day compared to the 90s. Think of whatever that comes to your mind abount modern anime with the highest visual quality: SNK, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Boku no Hero. None can match the aesthetics, immersion feeling and history quality of the late 80s and the 90s, these are the Golden Age of Animation for a reason.

@@john34261 Personally, I always liked Appleseed and it's designs. If I recall how using the armor works it uses -- essentially -- movement transmission. Basically, it moves in tandem with the body, making the body effectively the piloting system and the stuff in between the interpreting software for the machine.
The down side is that it would probably require implants to transmit nerve impulses. Alternatively, a highly sensitive interface suit could work... But that would have it's own problems.

Yes. Using the controls is completely ergonomic. The movement of the body is reproduced in the mecha. The annoying thing about other mecha anime is that all you see is a pair of joysticks, levers and pedals. While the mecha has human form, which makes no sense. How to reproduce body movements? When it's a brain-machine interface like in Evangelion, it's even acceptable.
