It always blows my mind reading these old magazines to imagine a world where Pokemon was still weird and new and exciting but totally unheard of by most people. There was a time before Pokemon, and 1998 was right at the end of it! I still have all my old gaming magazines, they've survived rips and tears, and a lot of house moves! I got rid of some of the additional books and guides for games I didn't play, the little booklets that would come free with the magazine, but I still have all of the actual magazines themselves. It's always so much fun to look through them and remember the past. This is a great series, thanks for making it!
These are so good. Maybe it's just nostalgia but I genuinely believe N64 magazine is one of the best magazines I have ever read-across all subject matter, not just gaming.
Yeah me too, they knew their audience so there was really something for everyone. I sometimes think just how fun that workplace would have been during this era. What I’d do for one more anniversary issue to be made with all the staffers back
@@n64glennplant Yeah I know what you mean. I feel a similar way about Rare in that era. Watching that Golden Era documentary and seeing the staff working in that quirky office converted from stables in the middle of the English countryside - it made me realise how much fun it must have all been.
I get what you mean but magazines that are so clearly biased towards one company and their consoles can easily mislead people. Did Nintendo Power ever give a full on negative review to a Nintendo game that deserved it? I am genuinely curious about this.
@@jonbourgoin182 n64 magazine was one of the best selling magazines in the UK for any publication, not just gaming. There were many multiplatform magazines, CVG being a good example but naturally if it’s a format specific magazine then their intention is to keep people buying the magazine
I grew up in Bath were the magazine was made. My friend's dad worked for Future Publishing who published the mag and did some of their photography. I bought every single issue of the magazine religiously and had a huge stack of them that my mum probably threw away after I moved out when I got older. I remember seeing Tim Weaver the editor in Sainsburys and asking "are you Tim Weaver from N64 magazine?", to which he replied "yes. Hello." and looked well chuffed that he had a fan 😆. My two best friends were a Playstation kid and a Dreamcast kid respectively, so the N64 felt like my own little world that I lived in, and N64 Magazine was a huge part of that. I'd completely forgotten about it honestly, until I just saw a video about Goldeneye that featured a pic of review by N64 magazine. The familiar print brought waves of happy memories back. God those were good days. The magical days of console gaming.
Glad you like them! They never do gang banger numbers in terms of views but those who enjoy the series are motivation enough to carry it on all these years 😁
Please, keep working on more of these videos, Glen. I am from Central America and I bought a couple of issues of this magazine. They were quite rare to find in my country and we didn’t get every single issue, but I grabbed the few ones I found on stores. Good times, thanks for the great memories friend.
Love these n64 magazine episodes. I loved that magazine. So much better than the official Nintendo magazine. I'm looking forward to when you get to issue 36. You'll see the competitions that month. I won the controller for coming first in Wipeout 64. On all tracks but one!
Magazines are great time capsules, not just videogame ones but for any hobby really. It’s like a snapshot back in time, and not just for the subject matter. They reference other stuff happening in the world at the time, you get pictures and the adverts too. It’s great!
Yeah one thing I’ve always noted was that even then games were like 40-60 and aside from things like fifa ultimate edition and that kind of game then these days games are still kinda roughly the same price….with inflation you could argue there’s never been a cheaper time to be a gamer 😂
I've plenty of these Magazines. N64 Magazine ( future publishing). I wonder if they're valuable now especially if they're in perfect condition? Great to see you are reintroducing these gems on your channel. Really enjoyable. Thank you 👍
I think it would be cool to do a thing where I start with the first issue of a retro magazine and read one a month as if they are coming out each month and play games as they are released in the magazine after reading about it. As a way to relive it.
Stupid fact, me, and my siblings used to cut my old N64 mags apart to get all the images of characters and then tape them into some blank paper to make our own magazines and Parody the video games stories in articles. I think my dad has one still when we did one about Majora's Mask lol
@@n64glennplant I remember being a kid and getting excited to go to my local pharmacy store to pick one of these magazines up. Fun times, now you can just look stuff up in the internet, that magic is gone.
I never got to read too many magazines and most of the games I had were either from hand-me-downs, word of mouth, or experimenting with what was available at the rental store. It feels like a completely different light seeing some games this way, especially Gex which I hadn't really ever had high opinions of, haha.
I always preferred Banjo Kazooie to Super Mario 64. Must have replayed it a dozen times in my life. The music is half the appeal, it's just so catchy & wholesome to listen to.
At the time, I felt that editor column implicitly referred to World Cup '98. It was getting incredible reviews from ONM and others, who suggested that EA had finally caught up to ISS. So the mediocre score in this issue really stood out.
I take my daughters to the playground opposite where that Visions game store used to be. If I was 20 odd years older I’d have been offering to take my daughters out to that playground all the time to go for a look at some N64 games 😂
Can you OR anybody else remember a UK game magazine (maybe the one in this video) had a load of mock up front covers for future issues and it had like banjo-threeie banjo-fourie banjo-fivie banjo-sixie banjo-sevenie ETC Would love to see it again.
Touting their independent reviewer integrity on the second page then immediately giving Gex 64 the same amount of gold coins as Banjo Kazooie is a choice.
Well that was anticipation coins not scores so I guess you could argue they were equally hyped for both and perhaps because gex developer was more open about the game they knew more about it
British magazines tend to overhype at the time. This particular issue GEX 64 got the honor. But when review arrived, there were no kind words. Similarly EDGE hyped every new console as a revolutionary. Only to give lowest possible ratings later on actual release.
I always loved that Made in Japan bit with Max Everingham. Wonder where he is now? Probably not in Japan anymore. Anyway, I was still into football back then and played way too much World Cup '98. Average game, ISS was the one. Just the commentary was godawful.
Ha I remember iss “commentary” on the snes and still finding that pretty nuts when it announced corner kicks etc. iss deluxe really was a thing of beauty! Was quite the pro evo player on ps2 as I lived abroad and my housemates were always on it

This series is such a treat, Glenn. Would happily sit through every issue!
Hopefully one day I’ll have them all up!
I appreciate how you review the ads within the context of their time. The ads were such an integral part of the overall experience.
Yeah and lovely to see so many independent game stores back then instead of the monopolies that exist now

Good question! They’re not particularly expensive now even Minty but certain covers like Zelda etc typically go for more
At the Banjo-Kazooie pages, we can see there’s still some few beta-elements, like the beta-Mumbo house and -pad

The coziest series on UA-cam!
