Personally my opinion on the utopians code that it needs a revision the decision to stay out of war and politics and on killing need the most attention, and they need a proper training program because the code's rule on killing isn't the only thing getting young heroes killed the lack of training is also a factor

For me, as someone who hasn't read that much Millar stuff, if the adaptation of Civil War is anything to go by, I'm happy that I'm not that interested in reading his books! However, I WILL say that his best work is probably his work on the Superman Adventures comic tie-in to Superman: The Animated Series. Those are good books and I highly recommend them. Apart from those though, I'm glad I'm not reading his other works :)

I am of the opinion that lethal force should be an option for superheroes but not the first. Not all superheroes have to kill and if writers don't want their heroes to kill, they frankly should stop bringing it up. Because every attempt at justifying the no killing rule only makes it much more obvious how heavily flawed it is.

Too, Maybe have a system to have a check when people were killed in actions and judge that afterwards in some way to, keep that in mind, but a so strict no kill rule without exceptions, is, its not realistic, ion case to case judged.

I also think of police. Like how they should strive to not kill as many times they don't have to. If their approach was closer to this b how many times would un armed people be killed. Seems like the show is headed to kill all the time. When it should be as described...certain actions warrant lethal force.

This analysis of Utopian's mindset makes a lot of sense actually. I feel like also it points out that Sheldon is AFRAID of change. He's afraid of it because he wants to stick with what he knows best. I have a grandmother who is similar in this way and I see this in both her and Utopian. I think part of being afraid of change is because they would have to recognize they are not in a world that is theirs anymore and that they have to adapt to it but they don't know how to so they stick with the old ways.

Watching Jupiter's Legacy, I kept thinking of Robert Kirkman discussing Invincible. He planned to have the twist in issue 20 and Image said do it now because you will not make it that far without it. Jupiter's Legacy needed to get to the (or really any) point alot quicker than they did.

In my opinion, Jupiter's Legacy should've done what the anime Bungo Stray Dogs did and spent the first season with the main story and the second season with the backstory. That way, everything flows much smoother.
I personally didn't mind Brandon and Chloe. However, one of the biggest issues with their characters is that they're adults. If they were teenagers, they'd still be annoying, but their whole "daddy was never there for me" argument would've been more understandable. That being said, Utopian's biggest problem is he can't turn his superhero side off. Part of Superman's appeal is his ability to get down on everyone's level and talk to them like a person. Utopian, however, is nothing but business 24/7, which is why his character works for me. Between becoming a businessman at 25 and a superhero for another 70 years, it's no wonder that he's forgotten how to "people." There's also the fact that he's been a superhero longer than he's been a father. Considering Brandon and Chloe are only in their 20s, it's not surprising that he doesn't know how to be a father outside of the strict rigid system of business and superheroes.
Brandon and Chloe may be screw ups, but Utopian isn't really helping much either. Brandon did nothing but train and contemplate his murder of Darkstar's clone throughout the season, yet all Utopian does is berate and belittle him. When Chloe tries to explain why she never wanted to be a superhero despite her powers, he calls her selfish. It doesn't help that everyone around kept pressuring her to be a superhero and tried to get close to her to gain leverage in joining the Union. Also, Chloe did state that Utopian would use his powers to intimidate and scare off her boyfriends, which is extremely controlling of him. Utopian ignores both of his kids' needs and simply wants them to be younger versions of him. Kinda like when parents who are lawyers and doctors dismiss their kid for wanting to be an artist. Saving the world is important, and I think Brandon and Chole understand that. However, parents can't expect their kids to love and obey them unconditionally if they weren't present in their lives. Especially if all they do is complain about their goals and aspirations. Even when Utopian's own wife calls him out on his bullshit, he still just blows her off. Once again, all of this stems from the fact that he's been a superhero for 70 years and is mentally in his 90s. This is also a textbook example of an abusive tendency that parents inflict on kids. It's telling how the only person that Utopian is comfortable spilling his guts to is one of his supervillains. I'll also give the show props for showing a father going to therapy. We need to normalize therapy.
P.S. Can we all agree that Hutch is the best character in the show? The scene in episode 5 when Utopian confronted him, he freaked out and teleported to Iowa, and Utopian shot lasers at the ground and stole his teleporting rod to stop him was hilarious. I can only imagine the shitstorm that may unfold when it's revealed he was banging Chloe.

And that was in regards to whenever police brutality was brought up. And that one cop saying he wanted to do what Brandon did and go further with it. And there's also the fact that when it mentioned that 70% of the population supported what Brandon did, it didn't comment on capital punishment very much or at all when it probably should have. Idk maybe that is the acab mentality that I have developed over time lol

I'm not sure what any of this have to do with the American Dream. I'm not following. I may have to rewatch the series again.
But it was my understanding that the code is basically them saying "No killing, ever. And don't get involved in the politics of the world."
    Those sound great to me.
Like what if the Utopian was against something like gay marriage? He'd use his powers to stop it being ratified?
Or what if The Utopian was stopping a crook who just wanted to provide for his family? Should he die?
I'd admit that not killing can feel pointless at times, but I believe in the good of humanity. I believe that no matter what, someone can provide positivity and good for their world.
Killing them robs them of that chance. And there's always a chance.

I know I'm late to the video but I do see, in the comic book superhero discussion, an unfortunate binary.
Either they never kill, ever, or... The Punisher.
Let me be clear. If those are the options, I choose The Code. We have far too many examples of the police that superheroes so often analog in their fictions who are too ready to end kill. They've been given warrior training that neatly divides the world into the categories of cops, people who cops need to kill, and people who cops shouldn't listen to unless they're helping cops kill the people they need to kill.
That said, "don't kill, ever, for any reason" is... excessive. There should be cases of self-defense.
To note the Joker problem, which is to say that Batman is somewhat responsible for the Joker's future killings. Well... there's a legal system in Gotham, right? Surely, they can establish a law with regards to people who undeniably will kill because they have kept on doing so. Unfortunately, for as little trust as I have in the legal system to avoid unnecessary death, they may be the only alternative to someone who can dress up in a unique costume and decide they've got a feeling about who is and is not certainly going to kill again.

I hope in upcoming seasons we can get it right.....
I'm willing to give it a chance.
Acting is mostly good. Writing is trying. Maybe, let's add some good writers of color?
Directing- keeps it moving with action. Maybe, let's carve out some of the character development & moments?
Maybe, more episodes per season might help too.

No. More episodes is rarely ever the real issue. Is you make it for X episodes you can fit it in X episodes. The problem is more systemic. There priority are in the wrong places. That's it. They either fix there priorities or they don't.
The "more episodes" criticis one of my pet peeves. Is like saying a book needs more words or movie need it to be longer. I get were is coming from but is rarely true. Editor exist for reason. More is not always better. This is why editing is an artwork upon itself. Knowing when to cut is fucking everything and what to focus in story is what dictate if you can make it X fit in gif or movie or "Whatever Netflix algorithm decide what get another season" or anything else. You just know to use your time wisely. Rarely they need more time. They just made bad choices but no creator will admit that. Which not to say creators cannot be screw over with bad management. Is just more likely they didn't use there time to tell X wisely. (Which in fairness is fucking hard to do no disrespect to folk that work on this)

    • @fc8240

Thanks for responding. Got your point. Adding more episodes won't fix problem. Lol. Fair enough. I like your passion.
And, in fairness, 20 episodes, 16 or 12 episodes will be different than 8.
But, you are right- if you don't develop story or characters- you won't rectify the problem(s)
Question: what would you focus on or develop? Can you share your ideas or examples that might lead to a discussion or dialog? I'm curious to hear your ideas... if you choose to share..... thanks again!

I had no interest in this show because I'm really sick of superman deconstructions and the fact that every modern superhero story boiling down to "You don't want to kill ANYONE? Haha! What a stupid and naive and impotent person you are! The only way to make a difference is to murder the bad guys! Bad guys are pure evil!"
We live in a time where law enforcement officials can murder someone with impunity and cops literally get "killology" training from a man who says killing isn't that hard and they should thing of themselves as sheep dogs and the rest of the population as sheep. Not to mention the fact that people go out of their way to justify extra judicial murder in all forms. Maybe the problem facing modern society isn't that people are too close minded about murder. Maybe it's that so many people are ready and eager to justify murder as a tool that is always used to be used to protect the greater good so that we can sleep at night believing that the systems of power in place are "protecting us.
Is it really too much to ask for more superhero stories that remind us that humans have the power to change the nature of our conflicts? Especially in a genre that was designed to feature characters that can literally do the impossible? It's kind of sad that it's easier for us to believe the fact that the batmobile never gets stuck in traffic than it is for us to believe in a world where it's possible for people to make a difference without murdering each other.

IMO American (maybe global?) society could do well to learn from these messages in our current age. In the definition of the American Dream by James Truslow Adams in 1931, "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement" regardless of social class or circumstances of birth.
The American Dream is rooted in the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims that "all men are created equal" with the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
Also, the U.S. Constitution promotes similar freedom, in the Preamble: to "secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity".Wikipedia
So, it never was inclusive in its inception or lens or ideal. Never. All men are not created equal. It is very biased and pointed in one direction. So, for me, establish it- which show did. And then, deconstruct the lie. And perhaps, reconstruct a new ideal or aesthetic- with all stakeholders ... more inclusive- more other- more open- what do they come up with?
Ps... wouldn't it be great if aliens who bestowed powers were of color and had a very different system from ours..... then, I get excited for what storytelling can happen....you know?

I watched your review 2 more times. And I was struck by union of justice, utopian, the code... but mostly, fixing the code.
Don't kill. Rehabilitate in super max.
But super villains kill. Destroy. And take privilege, power, prestige.... by any means necessary.
Point is: system is not a level playing field. Rules, roles, expectations, methods are not the same.
So, I need smarter writing, characters & strategies.... doesn't need to be a woke dialog. Lol. But, can I get less Karen's and felicias? Lol. Naïveté has its place for sure- but if this going to work and be interesting we need more skill.
Union of justice - a group of people that make sure justice is had by all....
Utopian- a society or world of healthy or right....
The code- a set of values, beliefs, creed, way of being.....
Fixing the code- making it work, making sure code is realistic and just for all not just some....
    Questions to explore....
    Who were the aliens?
Why did aliens bestow powers to them?
Did the aliens have a code?
What kind of society or world did the aliens have?
    Are the aliens still alive?
If yes, might they come back?
How did others get powers on this show? Are they all descendants of originals?
    Who are the stakeholders?
If we organize with a union- who should we add? How do we decide? What or who is most important? Is there a criteria?
