These electric type Pokemon have a lot going on, and in this "pokemon explained" video I am going to hopefully prove to you that Luxray is a lynx and not a lion.
Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Can you look at all of the Plants from Plants vs Zombies 1 & 2🧟♂️🔫🌻
When will you look at all of the Dinosaurs from the video game Fossil Fighters🦕🔥🦖
Definitely a lynx, but with many lion traits. Although, I think the Shine from Shinx is for the fact that it's dex says it releases blinding flashes of light when in danger.
When is the next kaskade video
Ok
To be fair, some Pokemon inspirations tend to be complex than clear-cut. Though Luxray could be both lynx and lion.
I'm I the only one who thought it looked like a wolf abit
Aren't lynx and lion technically the same thing
@@chrisclack4258 They're both big cats, but lynx have better vision, pointer ears and are smaller
Edit: Just learned that lynx were not big cats.
Well origins or not....I still love Luxray it's one of my favorite electric type pokemon
@@chrisclack4258 not at all. Lions are like 5x bigger and live in completely different parts of the world.
Of course it's not a Lion, it's a Jigglypuff seen from above!
I loved that episode
It is a liger
How dare you pull that out of my memory
God, that episode brings back the bs levels.
yesss
Luxray is just big zappy meow-meow and I love it, there's no more that needs to be said
Love this!❤
We can all agree that its a zappy meow meow
Luxray is definitely a lynx with a lion-ish mane (as you said lynx do that too) and a lion-ish tail. Evolution (REAL or FICTION) is very complicated and interesting.
Have you considered a Liger or a tion?
Why not a lynx-lion. That's how I always thought of it. And also the shiny has yellow fur like how lions are protrayed in cartoons 🦁
@@supershotgun6921 it is a liger
@@lordsebbion just because the Japanese name says tiger doesn't mean it's a liger or tigon because there are any tiger traits reflected in the design besides average cat anatomy
It’s a pokemon, I don’t get why everyone’s always “is it a lion or lynx” it’s BOTH it’s a FICTIONAL CREATURE
Luxray just being the big cat Pokémon makes even more sense to me. Think about it. The abilities & home region of a lynx, the physical features & pack structure of a Lion, the Japanese name & stripes of a tiger, the black of a panther…. The design is like 2 big cats with motifs of 2-3 more.
Lynx is not feline genus
@@shadelightss they literally are a genus in the Felinae subfamily
@@shadelightss Lynx aren't in the panthera genus, making them not big cats, but still most definitely a cat lol
@@ericcarnes7115 yes that's what I say
@@shadelightss @ShadeLights Your comment is slightly confusing because you say feline genus which I'm gonna assume you meant felidae as feline isn't a genetic term; which isn't a genus it's a superfamily that includes every cat. instead of Pathera genus which only includes lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards and snow leopards. I wasn't correcting you per say, just your wording.✌
Luxray’s mostly a lynx, but moreso just a fictional cat that pulls from various inspirations. It may have the mane and the long tail, but it still has the lynx vibe, y’know? I think that Sprigatito will be a far more clear-cut example of a lynx Pokémon. Excited to see what they do with the eyes.
Also please show more of Sasha I love her
I agree, Luxray in definitely a lynx with parts of big cats (lion mane and tiger stripes as the obvious parts). Could also be partially based on the Sphinx, those ears look kinda human.
Sprigatito being a lynx would be amazing if they can keep it on all fours, humanoid cat Pokemon do not work the best and many people would be upset.
They're focused on the smell and weed aspect more.
I really see it as more lion. The only things lynx about it are it’s eyesight and cold environment
@@ThisAintGood. Shine lynx for the base form really says lynx but what lions have stripes AND black manes both?
@@Topdoggie7 lions don't have stripes but they do have black manes. In fact lions with black manes are more desired by lionesses because lions with black manes have higher levels of testosterone making them more aggressive and likely to be better at protecting not just the cubs but the pride as a whole.
Honestly I didn't think it was a lion until the internet. I thought it was a Lynx. But now, I just assume it's both.
If it helps, the Pokémon manga depicts them as living in lion pride-type groups.
It's clearly meant to be both.
This makes sense I was staring at my shiny Luxray earlier and I couldn’t tell what animal it was. Half lynx 49% lion and 1% tiger makes perfect sense.
It does have those stripes on its legs.
This man is one of the few people who actually makes the sponsorships interesting
The only other person I can think of that will interest me is mandjtv with Grunty boi...but I gotta give Lockestin credit he's not pestered by Raid Shadow Legends. Seriously it's annoying it's not even a good game
I appreciate that he ended this one the way it started, so it doesn't feel like I've missed any content content I skip it.
It's weird but I get a certain amount of satisfaction out of seeing Lockstin essentially argue with himself.
To be very fair, locally here in northern Sweden, we call the lynx the "lion of the northern lands"
It's the mane spike on the top of the head, and the shape of the ears that cause the problem. Lynx manes really don't extend over the head that way, and lynx have thin, pointy ears, with thinner, pointier extensions. The silhouette does not read lynx at all.
Lynx also doesnt have a long thin tail like that. Like maybe it could be a little of both but it looks primarily like a lion
Yup. Lion first lynx second. That may not be what the creators intended, but its certainly what they made
this episode had gnoggin in a more prominent role than usual and that made me happy :)
That
That's not "Gnoggin," that's Max. Resident Skeleboy.
@@MegaGaming11 Maxil A. Gnoggin.
So yes. That is Gnoggin. Yet it is also Max.
Made me happy too
He hasn't been seen much in years!
Just thought I'd point out that Sinnoh is also the region that gave us hippos. Dessert Hippos.
Also Lucario, which seems to take inspiration from Anubis...in Egypt.
Also skunks and parrots aren't native to Japan either.
I can see the lynx draws, but I do think the lion ones are a lot more forwards.
you know Lockstin if you need another "dex" to go through why not monster hunter stories 2? its actually pretty expansive and its technically a monster collecting game giving you the perfect excuse to go over the origins of these awesome beasts
That's wayyyy in the future lol we're nowhere near done with Pokémon
Monster Hunter in general has really neat and detailed creatures. Each with lore and biology just as detail if not more detailed than most Pokemon frankly. And they actually exhibit interactions and behaviors in game.
Big Tobi-Kadachi fan
@@Deadpool-ri3rq he's done bugsnax Coromon and nexomon already
@@randomrayquaza2044 Those were etymology videos, not deep dives into lore. Besides, those are all 1 installment games with a small roster.
It is obviosly more inspired by the physical attributes of a lion and the powers of a lynx
I've said it for many years, It is so frustrating when people say Luxray is a lion, not a lynx, and it's equally frustrating when they say it's a lynx, not a lion. It's both. It's always been both. Why is this always so hard to accept?
Lions are more common to public knowledge
The same reason there's a debate between whether the Johto Legendary Trio are legendary cats or dogs. Yes, Entei, Raikou, and Suicune have a general aesthetic reflecting lions, tigers, and cheetahs, respectively. But they're also sometimes assigned canine traits like barking, and their anime origin scene has 3 dog-like pokemon burning in the tower before they were resurrected. So they're both, and Legendary Beasts has always been a more fitting term.
@@CrownofMischief When did any of them ever bark?
@ Raikou and Entei's dex entries
@@CrownofMischief I just checked those, and they did in Gen II and remake title entries.
I'd also like to mention that while they do live in sinnoh, a particularly cooler region, they make their home in grasslands. This is more evident in the manga but still-
I feel like a lot of the visual lynx-piration was lost due to the long tails, regardless of the constellation.
Thank you for fighting this battle on behalf of the lynx.
The lion inspiration is there and sadly, it stands more prevalent than the lynx part, but the lynx part makes far too much sense to be in second place.
And the round ears.
According to Bulbapedia, it's based on lions, lynxes, and sphinxes. The flat face and round ears I can see being sphinx, the x-ray vision lynx, and overall shape being a lion. You put a silhouette up and I guarantee you'd see a lion shape.
But this brings up a big question, since lynx are known in several cultures to be known with some form of PYSCHIC clairvoyance.....
WHY ISN'T THE LUXRAY LINE PART PYSCHIC TYPE?! At least maybe when shinx evolves into luxio it could gain the psychic type to reference many myths of lynx having some form of psychic powers🐈🔮
Probably because it's not a lynx
@@bnashee have you watched the f***king video
@@Eclipse_101 No no, Hes got a point.
Its BOTH

In germany lynx are called Luchs (pronounced as the Lux part of luxio) so it was never a question for me as a German
The lux part is because thats a word commonly associated with bright things. Its an electric type
@@bnashee That's clear, but in German it creates a double meaning
It makes me happy that you are bringing Maxil back as a kind of antagonist
You should have Maxel show up in more videos, the back and forth was hilarious and made for a great video!
Given that he was playing the Part of the Stubbornly Persistent Comments Section, there's no reason he _wouldn't_ play the role admirably...
Luxray has round ears (a trait common in all big cats, including lions). Lynxs have triangular ears.
Nothing about Luxray screams Lynx, it almost reminds me of Kimba the Lion in appearance the rounded ears, stylized mane, big anime eyes. In the legends game it’s about the size of a lion. Yeah Pyroar is clearly a Lion but Luxray is too its mane fully connects and look at the tail. Im with Gnoggin on this one.
0:57 This line implies that either someone has told him this by looking it up to win an argument, or they literally looked up every language translation of Shinx to see if their were any connections to lion to prove it was a lynx.
Lol I never saw Lion in Luxray until this video. Ppl really thought this was a lion? I figured it was an abstract Cat like a Jaguar mixed with a cheetah and other random praire cats. Especially because in Legends Arcues how high they walked with thier back legs. Lions walk firm (males don't hunt) while cheetahs and Jags keep the butt up more. Like Luxray does
Yeah, the ears, living in packs, tails that are long with a tuft at the end, the shape of the main, etc. That's why.
@@markrounseville6998 Lions are cats too.
Lol but i guess i saw it after the video. I jist nsver saw lion.
@@ashtonoak4370 I know lions are cats too, obviously. I was just surprised that you never saw the lion influence at all.
I have a theory about why luxray’s japanese name has the word for tiger in it.
In some leaked Pokémon beta games there was an unused electric type tiger Pokémon named Kotora that had (in one game at least) a three stage evolution. It’s possible that Nintendo save the idea and revamped it to be the shinx line. If you look at them both, they’re a three stage pure electric type based around a big cat of some kind ( kotora a tiger, shinx a lion/lynx) with the first stage being a cub and the final stage being the adult cat. Not to mention Pokémon have revamped beta designs for newer generations (Tangrowth and Leafeon being some examples).
I think the tiger in Luxray’s Japanese name may be a homage to the beta Pokémon that it inspired it’s design.
Or the stripes on its legs.
Great, now make a video talking in-depth about why Luxray isn't also a Dark type.
I was debating that in a comment section somewhere a little while ago and I'd like to come back to it prepared.
To be a Dark type it would have to fight dirty or have malicious tendencies, none of Luxray's Pokédex entries state anything about it fighting dirty or being a malicious creature though it does learn a fair number of Dark type moves.
"Lions live where it's hot."
Barbary Lion: "Allow us to introduce ourselves."
Yes, those lions existed and lived in northern Africa and even survived on cold mountains, look at the last photograph of a barbary lion and you'll see
This may just be a complete coincidence, but in german the word for lynx, "Luchs", is pronounced exactly like lux.
6:45 if luxray is just a big cat then it wouldn't be a linx first since linxs aren't big cats, that term is normally used for cats in the genus panthera, and while a few members of the felinae genus are sometimes referred to as big cats the lynx is nowhere near big enough for even an honorary title.
The luxury line certainly takes inspiration from folklore involving the lynx, but it has none of the lynxs defining physical characteristics, the bobed tail, tuffed ears, or long back legs. The mane also does not look like a lynxs at all, a lynx mane is essentially just elongated cheek fur and unlikely luxrays mane its distinctly angled downward. Some lions that live in areas with large amounts of thick/thorny vegetation have actually evolved to have smaller scraggly manes or even gotten rid of their manes completely so luxrays mane not looking lion enough doesn't make much sense to me. Lions also used to be native to Europe, and I'm not even talking about prehistoric lions, lions didn't go extinct in Europe till the 10th century and their range reached as far north as turkey (which can reach -40°) so the idea of a lion like pokemon living in a colder climate isn't that farfetched.
I wouldn't say luxury isn't based on a lynx it definitely is, but everything but its eyesight reads as lion to me.
Luxray will always be the og lion pokemon in my heart
whether its more lynx or lion depends on which features hold more weight to you. to me, the physical characteristics (tail, ears, particularly large mane) and behavioral characteristics (pack lifestyle with single male) are more important than its region and lore, so to me this line is a Lion-lynx. interesting vid!
Maxoll is being nothing but a contrarian and we love him for it
Legit with both being Electric types that are three stage Pokemon that first evolve at level 15 and then level 30, I’m surprised that the Luxray and Ampharos lines haven’t acted as version exclusive counterparts to each other.
Have or haven’t?
Pokemon takes alot of creative liberties changing into different animals between evolutions or kinda fusing different traits of simular animals into one or names not quite being right like InfernAPE despite it being a chimp/monkey with is long tail and lean build.
I wish we can have more pokemon that's a mix of 2 different animals like Primape the pig monkey or Mamoswine the pig mammoth 🦣
0:04 that would be me for every time I've heard somebody say that it should have been dark type.
I have always believed the entire Shinx line to not be inspired by any singular beast, but rather the real-life hybrid felines known as ligers. I've never really noticed any lynx inspirations until this video, so I'll stand by the statement of "It's an awesome feline hybrid, what more do I need to know?"
So lockstin, when you die, do you also become a flaming skull to annoy a poketuber about Pokémon?
They're raiju! RAIJU! Raiju can be any mix of various animals, including leopord, tiger and cat.
They're to Raikou as Growlithe and Arcanine are to Entei! The pokemon at the burnt tower weren't eeveelutions but a Growlith (lion dog - Entei), Luxray (raiju - Raikou) and Girafarig (kirin - Suicune)!
I like that theory
BY THE GODS, Maxel is fighting back, he may be just a soul without a body now, but always happy to see him floating around, and happy he got really ingrained into this episode.
Luxray’s mane/hair looks like it comes straight from the Sonic franchise. Not that it’s a bad thing lel
me and my friend were debating if it’s a lion or cat today
Lions are cats xD
Lynx?
@@32987 no, they are feline just like cats are but nothing more
I thought it was common knowledge that it wasn’t based on a lion but a lynx.
I mean it’s literally in the name
I thought so too, but every time i think humanity can't be dumber i stand corrected
Thank you for making a video about this, I really don't like it when people misspecies me.
Actually, lynxes live mostly in Scrubland. Lynxes have paws that act like a snow shoe, to help them adapt to the cold weather. I study cats so I’ve had my research
Luxray is definitely a lynx. Wonder if Spigatito will turn into a lynx too? Luxray could be a mix of it and Pyroar then. XD Would be cool to get a regional form of Luxury though.
The only argument I have against Shinx being a linx is the ears. Since the linx's most defining trait is the pointy ears with the hair tufts
Keep in mind Shinx was a redesign of a pokemon made by a magazine for an April fools joke that was so popular Gamefreak wanted it for themselves
Lockstin going back and forth with his old skeleton self felt a lot like a Gaijin Goomba video, and I really like that!
I actually didn't know this, and the shinx line is my favorite pokemon ever.
I love your videos and I'll never miss a single one. Keep up the good work! 💜
I never thought it to be a lion, but always wanted it to be Electric/Dark.
That would go against it's own theme of being somewhat light based as well and it's kind nature
@@dragonlord4194 In other words, it should really be Electric/Fairy?
@@fencerderio9814 No mono electric works fine in my opinion. It doesn't need more really as it's a Sinnoh staple even without special treatment.
Why dark? Because it's black?
@@limeyell0w945 perhaps because of bite and crunch.
Growing up, I've always seen the Luxray line as more lynx than lion, but I do understand why some people think it's more lion than lynx.
Bro I thought shinx was some kinda cat mouse because of the ears...
Another fun fact: There was a lion-lynx demon in the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West. It was also called the Azure Lion or Blue Lion and it was believed to be the steed of the Buddhist deity Manjusri.
That could be the explanation for why the Luxray line has blue fur in parts of its body.
My cat is likely descended from lynxes and she turns 16 at the end of July, I'm actually part Native American and even part Norse as well as Italian.
Cave lions were extinct species that lived in the ice age
Wait a minute! Shinx, Luxio, and Luxray isn't Lions? But I'd kinda picture that Luxray would have a rivalry with Zebstrika and would Hunt them for food! They're both electric types! ⚡🦁🦓
Was just thinking about how much I wanted to watch another video by him. And it’s luxray!
This was a great video. I always thought the line was not just a lion. I wonder if it might get a varient that make the Lynx in it more obvious in the up coming games.
To be honest I never got the whole Lion impression when I saw one for the first time. I wasn't sure what it was other than I named the first one I caught Electroshock for my team. XD ((I actually wanted to name my first one Shock Treatment but it was too long character-wise.))
Luxray isn't a lion? What next, you gonna tell me Entei, Suicune and Raikou aren't dogs? I don't care if they look like big cats
Duh. You may be right with Entei being a dog, but Raikou’s CLEARLY a cat and Suicune’s OBVIOUSLY a horse. If they were all cats, they’d be called the Legendary Cats, not beasts.
(A joke, if it’s not obvious.)
They were never dogs. Raikou especially is obviously a sabertooth tiger.
I love that particular Pokedex, I remembered playing on it for hours on the maze game
YOOOO, Maxell back at it again. I've always thought that the Shinx line were Lynx but with other animal characteristics but I didn't think it would have this many connections to different cultures, no wonder it's one of my favorites.
The truth: Luxray is a dinosaur. Take it or leave it.
I'll take it!
Leave It.....😒
Well, time to spend the next 2 hours watching a video about a fantasy animal again
Damn, that’s really impressive considering this is a seven minute video
@@maker0824 I watch it in .25 times speed obviously lol
i agree with your points that no matter what it is in the end, it's more definatively Linx than anything else.
That being said I think the biggest proof that it's not just a weird lion is the fact that Pyroar exists a single generation later and that'd be slightly weird to do two generations in a row, especially during their "Hot streak" period.
Cough Lion first lynx second cough. They may have intended for Lynx first, but the sheer amount of the design that went towards lion makes it ultimately end up as lion first

Luxray is one of my favourite pokemon of all time so I'm proud to say that I already knew this 💀 it definitely incorporates several lion motifs though.
Luxray: The Most Basic Early Electric Type
I appreciate that you ended the sponsored segment the same way it started, so it doesn't feel like we've missed any content after skipping it.
I think it's a solid mix of both lynx and lion. There is an official pokemon center campaign assigning pokemon to the western zodiac where they feature shinx as leo. They could've easily put pyroar or litleo, bc it was a campaign that was made after the generation litleo and pyroar were released but they didn't, and represented leo with shinx. I think that speaks measures about the duality of it having inspiration from both lion and lynx. I also think Luxray is definitely shaped like the constellation of leo, from a side view it matches really well - and even has the tail swoop of the astrological symbol of leo!
this video was masterful, loved the use of Maxill to point out all the contrary points, essentially making this a heated argument with yourself
It’s a lion/linx I’m hyped for this information

THANK YOU. I get so tired of seeing everyone talk about Luxray being a lion (And being a Dark type, because we all know if you have black fur you **must** be a Dark type)
The shinx line could very well be a mixture of both honestly...pokemon DOES tend to pull from more than one source material. That being said I do think it's more lynx related but with lion like qualities
The dynamic of Lockstin and Gnogging, the comedy on this video was perfectly on point I loved it
The shinx line also has a Kimball the white lion inspiration in its design, and mostly in the ears.
I always thought the Luxray line was totally based on the eurasian lynx... I mean Shinxs name alone had me convinced, didn't know there was a debate about it lol
Just really needed to type i love your content and it always makes me smile.

Pyroar just doesn’t give me fierce lion energy. So hopefully another (That isn’t a mystical or legendary) lion with more of a prideful presence. Luxray is sheer badass energy personified
Aw man, watching lockstin argue with little floating skull its always a treat
I love the 'transparent' thumbnails! they work very effectively while nobody else is using them haha
I'd be lying if I said I'm let down by a shorter video but watching Lockstin slowly go insane was more than worth it

its 100% based on both
MAXILL! MY BOY! So good to see you actually doing stuff and tormenting your creator! I missed you, buddy!
