Important distinction: comparing your game to Critical Role or Dimension 20 isn’t just bad because they’re professionals, they also have a DIFFERENT GOAL than you do. You’re playing to have fun, they’re playing to put on a good show. It’s not that they’re unreasonably good at this, it’s that they’re doing something FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT than you are.
It’s less like comparing your friends’ football game to the NFL, and more like comparing your family photos to TIME Magazine covers. It’s just a completely different endeavor.

    • @GinnyDi

Well said. An example is the time spent in Critical Role when just one or two players are taking part in a scene. In a regular game, the other players get bored after a while, but in the show, if it's still interesting for the audience, the scene goes on for as long as it needs.

yeah. It also really shows in their terrain set ups and minis. Those leds, smoke engines, elaborate minis and buildings are almost pieces of art at times and they are spectacular for a show, but they just would not work well for us setting up a game on the living room table after having eating pizza in the dinning room next door.

@@sleepinggiant4062like I imagine actors have fun filming, or comics enjoy doing their sets. They’re making a product, they’re having fun, imo they’re just better at the game than most

I've been playing D&D since the late 70's, and when I first saw your commentaries, I thought, "Great, just what I need- some kid half my age who's been playing for less time than some of my campaigns have run, giving me advice." And I still think that. Without any sarcasm or irony. It's so easy to get so set in one's ways after literal decades of play, that it's refreshing and inspiring to see someone with all the excitement I have for the game, but from a fresh point of view. It doesn't hurt that you're creative, funny and have a lot of good things to say about the hobby, either. I even liked the mimic video (double-checks to make sure the Like button was actually hit- OK, it is now). Keep up the good work!

I'm also a "since the late 1970's" player. Well, I was the forever DM for the first decade and a half...
Anyhow, our gaming has pretty much died with one player dying, two moving to another state, one drifting away from the group... Leaving two of us still in the state and still interested.
I may have to try out that "playing in PUGs in a gaming store" thing. Now to find a gaming store that still exists...

Couldn't agree more as a DM, personally I think if you're character "knows" that spell, they should *know* that spell. Preparring spells and stuff is something we save for really big fights, if one has a ritual or incantation, something that takes time, I'll give a moment before the Boss for potions, buffs, spells, swapping gear, whatever they wanna do. The only thing I really restrict is changing class, I allow it once per campaign and we can't be more than 75% done. Which I do, not spoil the story, but tell them how full their adventure feels. The more full their stories are the closer they are to the end

Another good advice that worked for me. If DND stresses you out, TRY ANOTHER SYSTEM. i was absolutely miserable DM-ing DnD. Every session vagy at least half an hour of argument over rules, or trying to decern how any thing would work. I fing hated every second of it.
Went to another system to try out and play, Free League. So much easyer, every rule is straight forward. Started DMing Call of Cthulhu, never looked back. DnD is so busy trying to cater to everyone, they will not lay down decent rules, and even the ones they do can be interpreted 9 ways. It was madening

Can confirm. I used to rage about my players when I ran Pathfinder 1e because they never wore got it. They were fine with the basics, but nobody got more invested beyond that, which made things much harder for me in the long haul.
In the recent years, however, I swapped for lighter rulesets, especially those of the PbtA and FitD design space (also Wildsea when I find the free time to run again). Games that are so light that a cheat sheet or two is all the players need to play. And the amount of effort I need to put in between sessions dropped drastically from an hour to 10 minutes on average.
I still love my crunchy complex systems, but it's not worth the effort to run them most of the time for me anymore. It took me far too long to learn that and accept it, but I'm glad I did.

I will also say that I oddly felt a sort of despair about my game this week, "with all there is to worry about in the world, should I be playing my silly little game of elves and wizards", but I think joy is a close cousin to courage. It's why the existence of the shire is so important in lord of the rings. So I'm going to keep playing and not dismiss it as trivial. To play heroes is a sort of act of hope, and hope is always welcome.

How come? I find running the game on a VTT a lot easier than doing it at a table, because it immensly reduces the amount of note taking I have to do as a GM (monster hp, initiative, who has which condition etc.)

I love VTTs to make it easier to find and play games when nobody in your area either plays or the few gaming stores have fixed-crowd games that aren't inviting. Nobody in my gaming group lives within a 90min of me and a couple in different times zones - VTT allows this to be done easiiy.
But it adds a HUGE amount of additional work to DMs and some work to players if you want things to be TT-like. even basic map creation can be a nightmare. as noted, sometimes it's better to remember it's better to be good and just have fun than try to be "perfect".

We had a player turned DM that seemed to enjoy making us have a bad time. Not giving clear directions, having to give super specific directions (ie “I grab the knob, twist, and pull” as opposed to “I open the door”), killing us willy nilly, etc. were all his forte. We brought up concerns and he subsided a bit but we ended up having to fire him as a DM (not just for these reasons) and now he’s out of the group and we’re having a good time again.

I've also witnessed a DM stall a party for almost an hour trying to get through a single door they thought was locked because the player said "I want to push open the door". The DM said "it won't open, you think it's locked". He thought it was hilarious that we wasted an hour thinking the door was locked when really it was a pull forward door. Our characters obviously would have tried to open the door both ways and saying "push it open" was just a poor choice of wording which the DM got super pedantic on.. why? To make the game less fun I guess.

It's honestly very nice to hear someone else talk about how stressful D&D can be sometimes. When I'd bring it up to my friends and family, they would dismiss my feelings because "it's just a game," but it's definitely a social thing too! It's nice to spend time with friends in a shared activity, and it's difficult when that activity feels stressful as well. That ending at 13:44 is all such amazing advice and not just for D&D but life in general. I always run / advertise games as "homebrew" even if nothing is homebrewed just because it means everything is in play and nothing can be "wrong". After trying to be the prefect DM for years, this change made this 130 pound ball of anxiety in human skin far less stressed. Now if a player wants to do something technically not in 5e but it wont break the game, sure go for it. Oh you played a new video game with a cool country / character you want to base yours on, go for it. Whatever adds fun, just do it (as long as everyone is ok with it).

With so much to plan and do the worst thing you can allow yourself to happen is to let your insecurities take the wheel. Until you find your (and your players) own style don't force yourself to try new things unless you feel absolutely comfortable doing so, and remember that the goal is for everyone to have fun, including the guy/gal behind the DM screen. Your videos have always been fun and helpful, and it breaks my heart a little that comments on-line have left you feeling rubbish and dwelling on them, and detracted from the vast number of positivity in your comments. But I also get it - I tend to focus on my negative reviews for my business too.

I watch very few D&D creators on youtube. Because as you mentioned, a lot are created just to fuel rage. There was one that would pop up on my feed every once and a while (and without naming them) I would click on a few just to see, but almost every title was "Wizards scandal just got words" and "New WOTC scandal worse than last" and every time I would click on their video, it made me angry, not at WOTC or anything else but at the creator. The thing they were talking about, I never saw as serious as they, and their comments did. It just felt like they were blowing things out of proportion.
That entire story to say, thank you for being a good force in the D&D youtube community, because even if your titles are more negative sounding than others, at least your videos help people with any issues they may be having and not just throwing fuel on the fire. I can't think of any of your videos that are wholly negative.

Hi Ginny. I love what you do and this video really resonated with me. I recently decided to drop my homebrew campaign in dedicate me DMing energy to running mainly prewritten modules with an interchangeable group of dwarf PCs with three optional sidekicks so I can even play on days when only one or two people can play. I also met up with a group that I only see in person about every 6 months (very stressful) and came clean about how I feel about DMing for them and they were super-supportive. I have a lot of baggage about worrying about being underprepared for them but that's another story.
On the topic of having a healthy relationship with my UA-cam watching habits, I've noticed that I feel a social obligation to support some youtubers and continue watching their content even if I haven't really got the time or the interest. I'm actively resisting the urge to feel guilted into watching the UA-cam videos of my subscription. So as much as I appreciate the other stuff you do, I won't be watching the mimic video out of principle.
