Nintendo is shutting down the servers to Super Mario Maker (1).
Super Mario Bros. 35 is also worthy of a Death of a Game video.
Come to think of it Nintendo has been contributing quite a bit of future content.

A key detail that’s actually missing from this story is that neither PTCGO or PTCGL exist in Japan. They’re projects aimed entirely at the audience abroad, because Japan itself has such a strong in person tournament scene that a digital client was likely deemed unnecessary. That’s likely why they didn’t get the support or funding necessary to be better than they are, since they’re run by the international subsidiary of TPC rather the main branches like Creatures (the company that designs the cards) and TPC itself. The new game, TCG Pocket, is a game supported and developed by Creatures and DeNa (TPC’s mobile game dev partner for Pokemon Masters EX). Right off the bat it got major spotlight and introduction in a Direct, something that neither PTCGL or PTCGO EVER got. So that’s the clear difference, if it’s made with Japan included, TPC will put proper effort, if it doesn’t, it gets scraps.

The Pokemon TCG is a wonderfully fun game with lots of potential, however the old and new digital version of them are so soulless it hurts. There is literally nothing to do but 1v1 ranked battled. Why are there no events? Why are there not multiple formats? Why is there no arena or draft style mode? Why is there no clans / guild / chat lobbies, its absolutely wild that a game with this much heart has no soul to speak of.
Here, Ill come up with something "Revenge of the Pidgeys" - "Use a prebuilt deck containing nothing but Pidgey, Pidgeotto and Pidgeot card varients, win 10 matches in this weekend long event to get a shiny pidgey card" - See how hard that was? Literally the first thing that came into my mind with no thought at all. There are thousands of cool possibilities.

Like events where you can only play anime-related decks, or where you have super low starting life points, or where your extra deck must have Fusion monsters only, etc. It encourages players to try different decks and get nice little rewards for it.

Online ended right as Scarlet and Violet came out and featured cards from HeartGold & SoulSilver, Black & White, X & Y, and Sun & Moon, which covers the expanded format. As someone who made videos using Pokémon TCG Online (PTCGO) and uses Pokémon TCG Live (PTCGL) today, I appreciate the coverage of this! I do want to clarify that it's commonly regarded in the community that the removal of trading was actually a good thing and with the battle pass being free, if you play the game even casually you get given a lot of good free decks to try out for yourself. The biggest problem the community has is that PTCGL is simply worse than PTCGO; it has less features, more game breaking bugs, clunky and boring animations, 0 artistic style & slower gameplay. We were given hope of finally having PTCG meet it's online potential with a client like Master Duel or MTG Arena and instead got a downgrade of what was already a 10+ year old game. It was and still is considered an insult to the true Pokémon TCG community.

    • @nerdSlayerstudioss

To be fair at 11:09 the battle-pass as well as the game is 100% free. You literally cannot spend any really money in this game at all. They get your money from buying irl packs that have the code in them for digital packs.
Having played both throughout the years extensively - I much prefer the new one. I used to have to spend hours looking for deals to trade like 100+ packs for one card I needed for my deck. Now I can build any deck I want.

    • @nerdSlayerstudioss
      @nerdSlayerstudioss  9 місяців тому +5

Sorry but with all due respect why can you suddenly now build whatever deck you want? It doesn't make any sense.

    • @CptnKraken
      @CptnKraken 9 місяців тому +1

Because I am no longer limited by how much money I want to spend on the old "trading system." A lot of people don't talk about it, but in PTCGO basic cards that everyone needed 4x of for every deck at the time (such as "Tapu Lele GX" or "Shaymin EX") were trading for upwards of 30 packs EACH. Most people didn't have 120 packs to trade so there was a whole "black market" on eBay and other sites that would just straight up sell you the digital card and then "trade" it to you in-game. Even though this is not what the game wanted you to do - it was sometimes the only feasible way to get rarer cards that you needed for your decks. This lead to a pay-to-win meta, as players with less money were simply not able to get the cards they needed reliably.
In PTCGL there is no way to trade and absolutely no way to spend money in the game at all, and they are extremely generous with giving out staple cards that everyone needs such as "Professor's Research", "Pidgeot ex", "Boss's Orders" for free (and they are usually the full-art versions too). I have like 35,000 extra currency that lets me get any cards I want when I need them. It is definitely not a perfect game by any means, but overall I think it is a much better game for players who are interested in playing the actual game and building decks, instead of just hoarding tons of staple cards to trade for packs when certain metas shift.

@@nerdSlayerstudiossyou can earn certain tokens in game for obtaining more than four of the same card when opening packs. You trade those tokens in for individual cards you want. That's how you can build your own deck. You can obtain booster packs by trading in those purple crystals. Purple crystals are only obtained from the battle pass and by leveling up.
So effectively, zero real world money is involved in the game.

  • @SeiferA2001
    @SeiferA2001 9 місяців тому +7

The counter points you made for people like me that like Live and regarding trading in these games as a whole is a valid critique in one hand.
But I always viewed both TCG Live and Online as a COMPANION to the physical game and not an ALTERNATIVE.
For me, it’s fine if trading doesn’t exist in this game for three reasons:
1: After what online proved, you cannot trust the player base to put cards up at a reasonable offer. If I have to spend money on 10 booster boxes to get my cards for my deck because 10 cards are in high demand, I’m sorry, but we don’t deserve that option.
2: If you want to trade, that’s what the physical game is for with both versions. You get your code cards via boosters. Your trade fodder is there to build an actual deck and go to a local league with.
3: From my experience with online since day 1, the ONLY trades you could make fairly with actual digital cards (not code cards for boosters) was for commons and uncommons.
Again, I get the counter point’s intentions, but it’s something I have to respectfully disagree with. But I know that can also be a personal take too.
Either way great content as always!

Something important to note, though I am not sure how you would have included it, was there is (was? I actually didn't even realize there was a new client until this video) incentive to buy the IRL packs and starter decks to improve your online collection, which is something Magic or I don't think any of the other competitors did or do, and something I rather enjoyed of the PTCG. Each real life pack/deck came with a code for the online game to get a pack/deck there. Decks were especially neat since I think it also came with the coin the deck came with. There were also codes in the tins for the tin card and sleeves.

See, I can't say I miss trading cause I remember it being basically people wanting 10s of pack for 1 card strong card or several lesser cards. And coming into it looked like people wanting me to buy the packs IRL to trade for that one card I need for my deck, which would total to $40+ for a single digital card. I had friends see it the same way as well. The secret, though, was spending money on third-party sites for codes for a fraction of a real pack, useally $0.15 to $0.50 a pack. Still felt bad, but at least better than spending for real packs. Never had a real trading interaction in it, but I do wish they would add Friend to Friend trading, at least. (Which would lead to third party sites dedicated to trading.) Side note neither vetsion feels like I own them to me since they aren't real and if they permanently shut them down with now transfer follow up the cards are gone. You can still use codes to open packs (limit 400 for each set for some reason) so battle pass hasn't felt game changer yet just some extra packs and cards.
I hope they do add more to LIVE with things like bots, ranked expanded, other formats, and fun game modes like the raid battle thing pokemon did. I at least enjoy playing the game and personally I just hope the older cards get implemented soon for expanded play. Other big wish that won't happen is 4 man free for all.

We can only hope they update the game.

I had no idea Direwolf Digital made this one! I used to play Eternal a lot (stopped because I was getting too invested and needed some space, game's still great) and I can see why they weren't as successful here. For anyone curious of the thoughts of a long-time Eternal player...
A: Direwolf Digital is made up of a lot of MtG expert players. Eternal showcases this. While I wouldn't say that means they're not qualified to make a Pokémon TCG online game (after all, the cards do already exist and such, and they've made a lot of online CCGs), it's also not something that plays to their greatest strengths.
B: One of the reasons Eternal is so good is that it really utilizes the advantages it has by being a digital-only game. It has mechanics that literally would not work in a real world game (not without jumping through ten thousand hurdles at the very least) and that makes it stand out, along with being very fun. Pokémon TCG wouldn't allow them to showcase that.
C: While Eternal is great as a game and has really good artwork for its cards (and some of its stages), it definitely lacks in the music department. I dunno what Pokémon TCG's music was like, but as someone who thinks highly of most Pokémon game soundtracks, I wouldn't want Eternal's creators in charge of that one. It's also worth noting that Eternal is a CCG rather than a TCG, and AFAIK, Direwolf Digital has never made a TCG.
Good video, as always! I'll stick to the GBC game myself. =P

I had found acquiring cards in Pokemon Online far more confusing and daunting as well as much less generous in comparison to pokemon live where it is very straightforward process. In pokemon live you can get the premium battle pass for no real money. There being no logs in pokemon live is certainly a confusing decision and its general buginess is bad. The game should be named a CCG, but that would be confusing from a marketing perspective when the game is about emulating a TCG.
Overall I feel I have as much ownership of my cards in a digital CCG as I do in a digital TCG.

There are a lot of problems with the new PTCGL. Performance, graphics, bugs, etc. But the new economy is so much better than PTCGO, it's not even close. I've been playing for only a couple months and have basically every meta deck, it's fantastic! I played PTCGO for about the same amount of time years ago, and only ever had one decent deck that was nowhere near meta level. I could not have acquired a single Shaymin EX card back then if I had wanted to. Now it's easy to acquire a full set of a similar modern card.

Yup. This dude has to be a mtg fan or something. I'm die hard Pokémon all the way. At first I hated and even resented they scrapped PTCGO for Live. I just downloaded live again and gave it a chance. It isn't bad at all. Turn off the VFX's in the options and it runs like a dream. They just need to update or optimize or whatever to make the games more speedier instead of waiting 3-5 seconds for you to play your cards. It isn't as terrible as this dude makes it out to be. I could only watch 10 minutes and it's just neckbearded nitpicking. Hopefully the add the last 3 generations of cards too. We don't have enough Ho-Oh's lol.

A core issue of PTCGO on iOS and Android I that they were relegated to tablets only because of screen size.
PTCGO ran very well on low-end computers, and PTCGL is hard to play on low-end or mobile in a way that's enjoyable, something Konami had done twice with Duel Links and Master Duel.
I do love Yu-gi-oh, but I miss when MTG's standard format was fun and PTCG is something I've constantly been trying to get friends to play. Somehow, the least new player friendly card game has the best digital game out of the big 3 despite it being so unpopular.

As someone who recently got into the Pokemon TCG (Like 6 months ago in the middle of the Obsidian Flames set). I feel like the system in PTCGL for obtaining the cards that you need for decks is a lot easier than compared to PTCGO. I like that the game actually gives you a lot of decent decks to start out with and especially with battle pass they give you competitively viable decks. Not to mention that the game is completely unmonetized apart from the code cards that you get from IRL booster packs. The credit system also makes getting the cards a lot easier since you simply obtain credits by just playing the game and progressing through the battle pass (although I do think that the grind should be made a bit faster). I do wish that the game had true expanded plus other formats though and also some of the other features that PTCGO had like copying your opponents decklists, the ability to mute your opponents emotes or viewing the cards that you have without creating/editing a deck. (Also would be nice to have a functioning game, TPCI pls fix the bugs and glitches)

At this point however we just wish they left well enough alone. It's very clear they had people that didn't have a clue what they're doing to make the game and now they're just trying to keep up with the bugs. It's very clear there will be a point when there are too many bugs and it will no longer be fixable. It's unfortunate because we all use it for testing and a bunch of people use it for content and to make a living

I am someone who got into the Pokemon tcg online and tcg in general back when Pokemon sword and shield battle styles just realeased and i was there not just for the beta of pokemon tcg live but the full release and it was a disaster and us people who are in the community and still play the tcg in general wish ptcgo was back so it makes me happy that someones covering the disaster these two games are.
don't get be wrong pokemon tcg online was not great and we've never really had a really good online way to play the game but it was passable compared to the new cilent which is a mess so bad that it makes the switch from overwatch 1 to overwatch 2 look completely flawless.
its one of those messes you wouldn't think is as bad as it is unless you were there for the switch it makes me sick.
i still play ptcgl but mostly cuz its the only way besides irl i can play my favorite card game with my friends so if it wasn't for that i wouldn't have it installed.
lets hope someday we get a actual good pokemon tcg game i would love to see a single player campaign game like the old gameboy color games or like the old tag force games for yugioh on the switch 1 or 2 that have a good multiplayer aswell i wouldn't even mind paying 60 bucks for that i will be honest if it worked and the campaign was fun.

I think i already saw alarm bells going off the moment when they had some weird thing where a certain amount of unopened packs translated to crystals, presumably at some weird rate. like who'd give a shit if there's no tradable cards & packs at all? also, i'm unsure if this was a thing, but was TCG Online a western-only thing? i could honestly see the disparity between the number of cards between overseas and japanese booster packs being a thing. if the new TCG game was accounting the japanese audience, then i could kind of see why it jumped the edge.
That and the Pokemon Trainer Club unlocks was kind of a western-only thing. think it was different from things like the pokemon GTS online and Dream World stuff...maybe. i know there was a old system where you just earned coins, which you used to buy acessories for your avatar (that might have trickled down into the TCG online game?)
Also they just announced what's essentially Pokemon Duel Links during pokemon day. 🤢

Online was at least passable. With enough updates it would've been great. Absolutely no reason why it needed to be replaced with Live, especially considering the state Live launched in/is still in. As for the bit at the end, I feel like the coin-flipping complaint is misinformed, or at the very least overblown. Sure, some cards require coin-flips, but most of the good decks have little to no coin-flipping required. My main issue with the TCG is how good multi-prize Pokemon can be (ex, V, VMax, VStar, etc). Very few decks that only use single-prize Pokemon are viable, and I feel like the attack and HP numbers for multi-prizers are getting out of hand.

As a F2P player, the changes from Online to Live are astronomically better. It fulfils the role of a digital sim, which is all we ever wanted, and it is incredibly easy to acquire the ingame currency to make decks. In that regard, it's the best digital version of a phycial TCG on the market, even with the constant bugs. No one cares about the lack of trading as the new system to acquire cards is easier and faster. Apologies for giving a lengthier response to the video than the community post...I had intended to write something out but never got around to it. Regardless:
Damn this hurts. Ironically, I heavily praised PTCGO =because= it was consumer-friendly. I get that TCGS inherently have a gambly/pay-to-win aspect, but the PTCGO genuinely did it best. Something I liked is that there was no battlepass, it rewarded you by simply playing. The best of which was tournament tickets which you could then use to enter tournaments. If you got anywhere higher than the first bracket, you'd be earning tradable packs. Meaning you got something that was effectively the common currency for the trade system. You got rewarded for playing, which you could use to test your skills, which you could then get tangible, meaningful rewards. Other TCGS don't do that. This one did. I had tried many other online TCGS and none of them compared.
Please don't mind my reminiscing, because this might be the last chance I will get:
I had 5000+ games played. over 1000 of those games were with an original deck of (almost) entirely Lucario cards, which had a 70%+ winrate. I traded for all the cards to make that deck as much of a needless flex as possible. I made every card I could full art or reverse holo, golden trainer cards, I even traded for holo energy cards. That deck probably struck fear and confusion into all who saw it. A weirdo with a lucario username, lucario sleeves, lucario coin, and some wack-ass completely off-meta lucario deck. I liked that deck so much I actually bought all the cards (at least the non full art ones) so I could have the deck in real life. I even looked so hard for a certain promo card I had to buy it overseas because it was the only site that I could find it on. (It wasn't expensive, because I'm pretty much the only few people who even want it.)
Point is, to see it replaced with this utter garbage is somehow both incredibly bewildering, and completely on brand for Pokemon. They will never make a good game unless they are forced to do so.
The new game is just such a soulless corporate husk. How on earth did they ignore the TRADING CARD aspect of it? Too many games get made by people who clearly have no idea what the point of the games even are.
Random note: the game had a chat, which they ended up restricting to the lobby. With that you could invite people for a 1v1 battle. So many people had so many cards that I made a fun game I'd invite randoms for: Random Battle. The game had a Deck Wizard that would try to auto-make a deck for you based on what cards you select. It was =awful=... Which was fun. Tell it to have no type restrictions and to select two random cards from your entire collection and it would produce the most nonsense decks imaginable. Get a random to join you and you and the both of you make a randomized deck without making edits to it and then battle eachother and struggle with the results. Nobody else really did this besides me, but man, was it fun. Stuff like that (like you mentioned in the video) was the type of thing they could have added officially to spice things up. Elder Scrolls Legends had a randomized tournament somewhat like this.

All they had to do was sell us packs and the game would have stayed alive but now we have this crappy version and I'm missing a lot of cards

I remember playing this game and having a lot of fun with the starter deck . Got me interested into pokemon and wanted to start buying boosters . Then I finally got match with actual deck and I ended up against a guy abusing the reshuffle to make a deck with only energy and a mewto EX and I never touched Pokemon card digitally and physically .

It's supposed to merge over. With that said you really have to search out all your old cards in the deck builder. Alot of players think they got stiffed cause they don't search all owned cards in the deck builder after the merge. All your old decks don't transfer over so you gotta build em again. See you on the duel field.
