  • Nyah, an Ohio teenager, has been colorblind since birth and has never experienced color properly until now. Thanks to a group of generous friends and the incredible technology of EnChroma, Nyah can now live life full color! I’m so glad I got to be a small part of this! See her experience color for the first time and our presentation of her own glasses in this video.

Also, from reading about them it mostly blocks out the overlaps in the colors. So from what I do understand as long as you have all three cones they should work for you.

      well i agree that they are a great invention and like most inventions, done by accident, but changing people's perception of color? Most these days give Nobel prizes for discoveries, not inventions. The glasses are a great invention, but i don't think the maker "discovered" anything, which usually is a high priority for the Nobel prize. If he had discovered what causes color blindness and how to fix it, now THAT would be Nobel prize material. Adapting glasses to act as a prism, like other prisms? An invention, not a discovery.

    The first part she looked through the glasses outside and cried, it was really beautiful actually.
    The 2nd half, she's inside doing it again? What happened there? A new person tried them on?
    And some guy was talking about some 'camp', but she's not a kid, what camping trip? With her family?
    I'm sure all of this has an easy explanation, plus I'm a bit tired at the moment, but what happened again?

    • @ladylavender8847

      Kim Land
      I'll do my best to explain!
      She used them for the first time outside. They were not hers. She was borrowing them.
      She either is at a teen camp or she's a volunteer camp counselor. (The gentleman mentioned "other volunteers" in the second clip so she probably is a volunteer)
      The second clip is where the camp faculty bought her a pair of her own colorblind glasses. Hence why she said "I missed color".
      In summary, in the first clip she borrowed the glasses and saw color for the first time and in the second clip she was gifted a pair of her own.

Also the back story on how these glasses came to be is fascinating. it involves a (laser scientist) an (engineer) a handful of surgeons who were stealing the glasses) and a game of Frisbee. It would make a great documentary.

    • @recoveringsoul755
      @recoveringsoul755 3 роки тому +1

      I'd be interested in the story behind them. I did find out the reason it is so much more common in men is because the genetic trait for colorblindness is carried on the X chromosome. Women have two of them so to be colorblind they need BOTH their X chromosomes to have that, like a colorblind dad and a mom who at least carries the trait.
      But men only have one X chromosome, so if their mother gives them one of those X chromosomes, then they could be colorblind. (fathers supply the Y chromosome to their son, and the X chromosome to their daughters)
      I wonder if something similar happens with male pattern baldness. It's either on the Y chromosome, or the X chromosome from the mother. After seeing several generations of men in my relatives I tend to think it's on the Y chromosome.

      i agree i like the backstory. For those who don't know the story, the engineer made himself some sunglasses to use while out at the park, a friend of his who was colorblind tried them on and noticed the orange traffic cones in the street. They realized that they made basically glasses that let colorblind people see colors to an extent. Then they went on experimenting and developing the glasses to what we have today.. Some other stuff i didn't note but thats the basis of how the glasses got started.

      because color blindness is on the X chromosome. Since men only have one of those they are more likely to be affected. They get it from their mother. Even if she isn't affected.
      But a female who is colorblind had to have BOTH of her X chromosomes from both parents carry that trait.

      We still see red. In specific types of color blindness, it's simply not as vibrant, and can blend with a couple other colors like brown, pink, orange, etc. It amazes me that so many people think color blindness is literally seeing in black and white. I'm not even sure such a colorblindness exists.

    I'm curious, if I were color-blind from birth, then how would I know that I'm color-blind?? (I'm not.) I know of color tests and other means of determining the fact of color blindness, but if I never had a test, the world would be natural to me at the colors that I see, would it not?? Again I am just being curious, can anybody, that is color blind, comment on this?

    • @adcyuumi
      @adcyuumi 3 роки тому +1

      If your color blindness is minor, it may never have come up in conversation. Have you ever disagreed with someone on exactly what color something is? Odds are one of you is colorblind -- probably not you, if you've been tested. Red/green colorblindness, the most common kind, tends to come up more since red is used for many things (stoplights, stop signs, some fire trucks, flashing warning lights, etc) and nature is rich with many greens.

      @@adcyuumi I understand what you're saying, but, If I had been seeing the world of color one way since birth, would that not be the same as seeing color? As in, if you say the grass is green, and I see brown, but I will say "Yes it is." Can a color blind person see gradient colors? -- Please don't think I am being obtruse, the question is; what is to say that my red is the same red as your red? /// all just questions, I am NOT trying to start an arguement ///

      Try picking strawberries or raspberries with someone that has good color vision. If they ask why you miss so many berries then you are probably red green colorblind.

    • @jeffreyharville1918
      @jeffreyharville1918 3 роки тому

      @@stephenolan5539 I can see that as a test, albeit an old test. My question stands, if I see color in a different light, or with different receptors, I could be color blind because I see different colors THAT HAVE BEEN NAMED TO ME AS "TRUE" COLORS, but to me green would be brown, blue-purple-black would all be one color. Or variations thereof. I could go on with the color switch but you understand. ----- Here is the thing, all my life certain colors have been pointed out as "pretty or puke or good or bad" and I have agreed with the assessment, as human nature will. But who is to say that my red is the same as yours, that my green is the same hue that you see, that all humans see the same thing, colorwise? ---- again I am not trying to start an arguement, just words for thought!

      Try this on for size violet is the only non spectrum color that humans can see. Birds can see more non spectrum colors.
      And also think about taste. A lot of people cannot taste everything in brussel sprouts. No one would eat them I they could taste them.
      There are substances that only some people can taste and others can't.
