    Lovely work. I too have a strong pull towards native British timbers and a more appropriate use for them. I also agree with your comments regarding woodland management. Too many people fail to understand that in order to get light to the forest floor its frequently the correct decision to thin a stand. That's not hurting trees, its helping the forest. There is a good deal of ignorance about with respect to forest management.

    I think you are a great craftsman. Your imagination is to be admired. I agree with the people about cutting the GRANDFATHER tree is not good, but for reasons of health of the tree and safety of the surroundings, it is sometimes a required thing. When you make furniture that will last like this is a tribute to the LIFE of that tree.Keep up the great work and thanks for the ideas.

    I agree with you, two month ago we've had here, in the north of France, a short but very violent storm and a lot of trees fell or have been seriously damaged so they become dangerous. My neighbour lost 40 poplar that he planted 30 years ago and it was really painful for him.
    The best we can do is to use these trees to make beautiful things certainly not to put it in fire.
    And I really like some of the furnitures you made.

    I too love the Grandberg Mill, I'm however designing my own mill, aluminum and steel, making a bracket for the saw to slide down a rail. Rail to be positioned at 1/2 increments. I too like making irregular furniture. But you've inspired me to do more. I've never sold furniture because I haven't completed enough for my own home yet..........have a full time job and too many hobbies. But wood is fun and milling residential wood is very environmentally responsible.

    Most of the trees in back yards of South Carolina, USA are burnt for firewood.
    Some is used for lumber, but with the vast tree farms here, only small lumber yards use urban trees. We have GrandFather trees in protected forest in every state, all 52 states.
    I have 10 acres of southern pines on what was farm land 20 years ago.

      Dejan Prokic agree, there is not one piece that would sell for less than $1000 here in Southern Ontario - those one piece benches would see $6-10k

    • @Logsnstuff
      @Logsnstuff 8 років тому

      +Dejan Prokic underpriced for UK also, a standard Europen oak table and 6 chairs will cost you £2k so a bespoke one with character that should be your starting point.

    Over here there is growing trend of growing artificial forests specialy for harvesting and i think that is good solution. IM not talking small treas but age ready for harvesting around 80 years. With treas of such age you can do anything and if you want to make a huge bench for god sake you can also use glue not take down 500 year old trea. Pristine forests should be left alone. And no offence but it dosnt take huge craftsmehsip to chainsaw out shape form one piece.

    I have removed the other comment. However I would say that your opinion is not valid. I use trees that would otherwise have been firewood. They have already fallen or were due to be felled for other reasons.Also saying 'I don't approve of taking down huge trees like that....' is too broad a statement. Taking a tree down depends upon a large number of factors which you need to be aware of before you can judge whether it is right or wrong.

    killing the Grand Father trees in an Old Gowth Forrest is kinda like killing a part of history. if it falls on its own then cut it up. other wise leave it alone. you should however cut the young trees down around the Grand Father Tree to let it have room to grow even further.
