- This nest had 7 Hooded Merganser eggs, 8 Wood Duck eggs and was incubated by a Hooded Merganser. I used my Canon VIXIA R 300 camcorder with an inverter and small battery to capture the jump on 5-8-14.
Who else got this in there recommended 6 years later!?
Me lol
champer slimmerthannone umm I wasn’t asking you. I was just seeing who got this video in there recommended 6 years later...
champer slimmerthannone WOW. Just wow. I’ve never seen someone get so crazy and offensive over...... a name. Chill out. I mean just saying no one can ever pronounce your second part of your name “slit- something... sorry my phone won’t even let me how it it’s such a werid name
champer slimmerthannone And idc what you say please get a life and stop trying to mess with people like me who just commented something to see who else thinks the same. And umm what does “bullwinkle” mean? Like I’ve never hear of that before..
champer slimmerthannone Dear Champer slimm- woops! Sorry it’s such a strange name my phone won’t even let me type it.
Amazing how the mother knew exactly how many babies she has and swimming away the minute the last baby came out and landed on the water, that's amazing impressive how nature are.
she can count; who'd a thunk that one??
@ Chuck Yang I noticed the same thing. Animals are amazing ;)
Ducks can't count. No chirping from the nest = time to swim away.
Holy shit they fast
That second one looked like a propeller on a motor.
I remember watching this Rupert, and all the ducks and babies that followed on Woodiecam...so miss watching them hatch and jump...thanks for sharing this memory...
Interesting those trees look unique.
They are Cypress trees and are not rare but are found only in certain lakes and streams south of North Carolina and Virginia.
@@ruperthester9407 Thanks for the info.
How can anyone with a heart give that a thumbs down?
Smart idea when you built that Duck House to install a convex metal shield to prevent snakes etc. from climbing up!
Beautiful video. Beautiful ducks and it's babies.
Thanks Drama Queen. Here is another similar video. Same lake but different location. ua-cam.com/video/-_w6rX0KMzs/v-deo.html
She knew exactly how many were left. She swam away just after the last one.
Ducks can count. Scientists must do a research on this.
Birds can't count. She hears her Babys crying in the Nest and when no one cries no one is in the nest.
Hm, do you think she counted the 4th, that drowned after getting hit on the head? 1:09
@@thomas.leitner yes count carefully, she hadn't drowned, at 1:40 she came with all babies along with 4th one
So cute, those ducks taking their first brave leaps into a new world. Wholesome.
Best way to give these wood ducks nesting boxes ..coz there are not trees tha had holes for them to use ..very inspiring ..pls. continue putting more bird boxes or nest for those wood ducks as well other birds ..bless you in all your efforts .. 😍😊
Not Woodies, Hoodies
This was a Hooded Merganser with Wood Duck eggs and Merganser eggs. Mostly Wood Ducks use the boxes in NC.
This is heaven.. would like to live in such a beautiful nature..!
there are crocs in there

Great video! Amazing how the little ones feel safe to jump and are very nimble in the water. Thanks for sharing.
11 little chicks. I LOVE how the Mother "ducks" underwater when dive bombers 4 & 5 collide, just to make sure they're both okay. 1:09
What I realized that one is missing. After 4 & 5 jumped and dived into the water.
Im pretty sure a fish got one of em
Wonderful video capture...ducks alive!
Rupert, dare I inquire how the d'lings get lifted back to their 8-foot high home? That was truly a leap of faith.
The ducklings jump out when they are 1 day old and they do not return. Mom does not bring food into the nest box. They eat aquatic animal matter around the lake and can fly in 9 weeks.

So sweet. Such a delicate plop into the water.

Beautiful birds
Built and installed 1st wood duck box this spring. 1st duck laid eggs but contractor doing work on dam knocked the box down. 15 eggs broken. Cleaned up box, put back up and got another batch. Ducklings came out and hawk (just 1 hawk I think) got most of the ducklings. Next spring we lay in wait for the hawk and damn the "protected" status.
Mel the hawk has just as hard of a time raising its young as the duck. Maybe think it through
Red Shouldered Hawks get a lot of baby ducks. I watched a baby wood duck get taken 2 weeks ago about 5 minutes after they left the box.
@@ruperthester9407 I had a Red-shouldered Hawk eating a frog on my duck box cam the day before they fledged! She managed to get 12 out and off to a hiding spot.
Hawks have to eat too!
Have you investigated the penalty for killing a bird of prey?
It must have been pretty crowded in that little box
What a beautiful view

So many little guys! I wonder how they get back up there...or maybe they don’t..?
They jump out at 1 day old and It takes the young about 8 weeks to fly.
That must be weird to see when they finally start to fly, dabblers with divers
All is well until a 10 pound bass swims by...

It appears that several babies are being attacked by fish but I now know that hen Mergansers do not allow baby Wood Ducks in their broods. I observed a different nest in March of 2020 and the hen Merganser ran the Wood Duck babies off and almost killed a baby Wood Duck in the nest box. I have also observed Wood Duck hens accept baby Mergansers in their broods. Nature can sometimes be difficult to watch............Rup @ www.Woodiecam1.com/
Or a turtle...
Absolutely fascinating!
Very nice, thanks.
They just kept on coming
uha 👨💻 So there's Mesh strip inside so the babies can climb out 😲 wonder how many boxes made deep without mesh ? chicks cant get out 👍
I usually saw 1/8th inch deep strips across the inside about 1 inch apart. But you can use wire mesh.
good job
Awesome 👏🏻

Who hanged the birdbox?
This is perfect birdwatching!
Rupert Hester @ Woodiecam1.com Glad you like the video.
I know this is an older video, but how in the world are there 2 different kinds of ducklings in one nest?
I’m very curious. I’m building nest boxes now for my pond.
It is fairly common to have Wood Duck and Merganser eggs in the same box. Both nest in hollow tree cavities and use the boxes and both start nesting at about the same time of year, starting late January here in NC.
Poor little number 5 disappeared. Predation. That's why she has so many.
How do they get back into the box?
They never go back in the box. They swim around and grow snd later learn to fly.
If you have to be a duck, there's hardly any nicer environment to be born and raised in.
When 3rd and fourth crash mummy went under water to check make sure they are ok
I give the fourth one a 9, he did a tiny splash!!!!!!! Lll
I made same observation (now Feb '20)----it's numbers 4 and 5, though.
So, you think she booted the woodies later on then? Did she take over a wood duck’s nest and incubate them all?
The baby Wood Ducks probably abandoned the brood the first day out of the box. I have about 50 boxes on the lake and I see several nests every year with Wood Duck and Merganser eggs incubated by Mergansers or Wood Ducks.
Love the content. What camera did use to record?
I used a Canon Camcorder with a 128 gb SD card and since the box is about 1 mile from my house I used an inverter and a gel cell battery with a cigarette lighter adapter. I put 2 brackets on a nearby tree to hold the cam and battery. I set everything up before sunrise and went back at 12 Noon to pick everything up. The hum you hear in the audio is the fan in the inverter. I then edited the video. I would not buy another Canon because the videos are in 10 minute segments and sometimes my videos are cut in half. Canon did this so you would have to buy their software. Screw that. Rup @ www.Woodiecam1.com/

She can hear the babies inside the box.
Lovely.
Too cute-thanks
Cute!!!!
This is fantastic, how do they get back up though ?
The babies jump out when 1 day old and it takes 8 weeks to fly. Only about 20% make it to flight stage.
@@ruperthester9407 so they don't go back to the nest. 20% sad statistic. We could do with less people and more animals.
Sabia exatamente quantos filhotes tinham! 🐣🐣
I counted only 11. Looks like the other four did not make it to the opening
Why did the merganser adopt the ducklings? It seems like I'm the only one confused.
Am I the only one wondering how the little ones get back in there?
They don't. The baby Mergansers and Wood Ducks eat animal matter around the lake shore. It takes about 8 weeks before they can fly and only about 20% survive to become adults.
@@ruperthester9407 That makes more sense, but also a bit sad so few make it. Nevertheless neat to get to witness.
Yes baby ducks are tough! But please next time, make the boxes a little lower 1m above water.
The boxes need to be at least 3 feet above water so the predator guards can work. The baby ducks are not hurt from the jump and some jump from boxes on land.
Wood ducks and mergansers actually nest WAY higher in old cypress trees that have hollowed our holes from wood peckers. The drop they’re having from this box is a breeze compared to what the “normal” drop is lol
Que máximo
Does it matter what direction the wood duck box faces??
Hooded Mergansers like the boxes facing out toward the open water. Wood Ducks prefer the boxes in the thicker, back part of the lake.
Very nise
Top super genial😎👍👍👍
Wonder how many get eat by largemouth bass
How will they get back to their nests....?

Do you think the mother duck can count. How does she knows there're enough her children down there

The way the ducklings land with a plop is adorable. I'm an amateur wildlife videographer, and I'm making a narrated movie about Hooded Mergansers for UA-cam. Since they rarely breed in St. Louis, though, I have no footage of the chicks. Would you be interested in giving me permission to use some of this footage?
