There was a little girl from Norway
Who’s a very old soul they say
    She can sing jazz
    Better than anyone has
One should listen to her everyday
There was a little girl from Norway
To a poor girl her shoes she gave away
    Deeply moved from the start
She keeps the child in her heart
And performs without shoes to this day
There was a little girl from Norway
Who could sing any song any way
    Well beyond her years
She brings grown men to tears
Through music her love she conveys

This young lady is unlike any other singer past or present. She doesn’t just sing a song; she intuitively knows how to pull out a songs full potential. She literally becomes the song she sings as she sings it. Her voice has no limit, and she hasn’t yet fully grown into it.

Dimash is one of the best singers of all time. Listening to him is like watching a fabulous circus act, there is a big element of shock and awe at what he can do, and every performance is a demonstration of his amazing vocal gymnastics. But once I have listened to him a few times I don't find any need to hear it again. With Angelina, there is a little bit of awe, but mainly a feeling that something has touched my soul, and I want to keep having that feeling, so I feel compelled to keep listing to her over and over without ever feeling that I've had enough.

I feel the same. Dimash got a great voice, technique, range, control, super talented and he is impressive to listen to. Angelina maybe cannot sing over 6 Octaves or is able mix pop and opera style,
but she instead has a unique set of techniques and skills from the Jazz repertoire, which she ingeniously uses to create masterpieces that touch your soul. She creates music exactly on point without exaggerations. I mean, if I would have an idea of a song that needed completion I would ask Angelina and not Dimash for advise to finish it.

Both Dimash and AJ are some of my absolute favorites. I'm disagreeing about Dimash is just about showing vocal gymnastic. I'm always feeling a lot of emotions even with Dimash-songs, and I'm thinking he is as great as AJ. He always puts an effort in trying to convey the meaning og the song, and from my point of view, I think he usually manage it brilliantly.
In this comparing, we should have in mind taht it was one of his first apparences with english. He didn't even speak english at the time, and has learnt the language afterwards. I think that's one of the reasons we that amount of emotion to the Queen-song.
But I'm totally agreed with you about Angelina Jordan. She IS among the best.

Not everyone who is highly gifted is a prodigy. Angelina understands and exploits every facet of what music and performing can be. She is a genius in her capacity to grasp and absorb so much of what a song can be so that she delivers both technically and emotionally the fullest expression of the song. She is a genius in music arranging, composition, and possibly songwriting. Besides her emotional content delivery, the most attractive thing about Angelina is her extraordinary ability to mimic so many great artists so that you know exactly who she is covering. I have heard lots of 'mashups' combining Angelina'a and another artist's performances and Angelina is replicating the inflections and tone of the original artist. It's like Billie Holiday is reincarnated. I hope she makes a series of albums where she 'assumes the persona' of an artist from the past and has that persona perform modern compositions in the style of the original artist. Imagine Angelina's Billie Holiday doing 'Stay' or 'Million Years Ago'. Thanks for the video, Alan.

The unique aspect of Angelina is that she DOESN'T use the extremes of her physical abilities when singing, only that part which she judges as optimal to express the meaning of the particular phrase she is singing. Combined with other aspects of her, eg complete "presence" in her delivery regardless of the venue, the accompaniment or the audience; and her inate skills musically, and she becomes at any age the most powerfully emotional performer I've ever seen.

The only other artist that has reached within me throughout my many years is Elvis. For me the music also died. I do not deny there are wonderful singers out there, to each his own. Years later Adele came along and reached me and when she quit singing for a time I also quit listening again. Then I heard Angelina on AGT, one song, then another, then the third performance of a song I had never heard. I then had to research her, I came across Rusty's list and I binge watched her covers. There have been songs along the way that I had never heard, I always searched out the original. My opinion comes from that research, and that is, no one has reached me, with the music I like and prefer like Angelina. She is my favorite whom ever you chose is OK. I need Angelina everyday. Thumbs up Alan with your research. Respect.

I agree with you completely. For me personally "emotional content" always beats "technical ability". There are many singers out there that have great technical ability, but there has never been a singer that connects me to the emotion of a song like Angelina. With many of these singers that have great technical ability, there is always this layer of "trying to impress us with their talent". I never get that with Angelina. She doesn't try to show us how big her range is, or how loud she can belt. She just sings it like she feels it. She will sometimes miss a word or get creative with the timing, but it just make the whole thing even more organic. It never seems like Angelina is _trying_ to impress us. It always feels like she is just singing for herself, and we are just being invited along for the ride. With a lot of these artists, it seems more like "come look at what I can do". With Angelina it seems like, "here is what this song makes me feel, maybe I can make you feel it too"

    • @erik-nm5cf
      @erik-nm5cf 3 роки тому +13

In a way I agree. But this is not so simple. To be able to express "emotional content" at the level of Angelina, you have to have "technical ability" on a similar high level. Those two must go hand in hand not beating one another. I am very convinced that Angelina's main talent is not the voice (without discrediting the voice in any way!), but it is her technical ability to use that voice in exactly the way she wants, to express exactly the feelings she means the song demands. Thus her "many voices" and the goosebumps spread through the world. Goosebumps are created by making tensions (IMO). And Angelina make tensions by subtle changes in volum, voice quality, timing, tempo and pitch. A millisecond delay or antecipation of a note may be enough, a note starting or ending a little out of pitch, a voice rounded, filled, stretched, whispered, fried, belted and suddenly withdrawn, and all the small (and larger) ornaments/embellishments/runs (call it what you will) she puts into her performances contributes to these tensions, and in many cases it is so subtle and delicately done that we just can't figure out what really happened. But it touches us! And doing it demands technical ability on a very high level!
But yes! You can display technical ability without putting in the emotions, and then you are on the "look what I can do" level.
Technique without emotions is very possible (not to say common). But creating emotions without technique ... ?

    • @RustyShacklefordChannel
      @RustyShacklefordChannel 3 роки тому +17

@@erik-nm5cf I was definitely not trying to diminish Angelina's technical ability with my comment. I was only pointing out that technical ability is not a very rare thing. There are many singers that can do all of the stuff that makes a singer "good on paper". Angelina is right up there with some of the best in that aspect. But what really sets Angelina apart... what is really, really rare... is her ability to draw from all those techniques in a (seemingly) subconscious way. You never get the sense that any of it is 'mapped out' ahead of time. Even if it _is_ the result of many hours of practicing a song and working out which things sound best, it always comes off like it just happened naturally in the moment. If I listen to some of the greatest technical singers (like a couple that have been mentioned here and in the video), I can hear the planning, I can hear the choreography of the performance. With Angelina, I don't hear any of that, I just hear her expressing the song exactly as she feels it. That's the thing that is so very rare. That's the part that can't be learned or taught.

I suppose each music vocal prodigy is unique but IMO Angelina's ability to convey tremendous emotion is what sets her apart. She was only trying to sing a song to the best of her ability.

That was, Alan, an entertaining overview of what we call "child prodigy" in vocal art.
The phenomenon finds itself more convincingly illustrated in the field of science, where kids are so advanced in their knowledge that some of them will even teach at the university level.
But, back to the vocal artists, if I may.
It is about what you call the "emotional content" that distinguishes Angelina, Diana and Dimash, for example, from other gifted singers.
I would submit to you that the difference between them, as child prodigies, and other singers who show an easiness at conveying emotions is that, like Angelina, they know how to use their inner self to sing "in the spirit".
We must agree, first, that humans are created, as the divine source of creation itself, according to the principle of trinity: body, soul (that is mind and emotions) and spirit (where lies the creative power of the prodigy).
What allows Angelina, for instance, to touch so deeply our souls to the point that she would seem to be existentially different than other kids singers is not, in my opinion, that, even during her tender years, her mind and her emotional appeal were trascendent.
After watching her performing from when she sang I Who Has Nothing at six years old to her recent Heal The World, I would venture to say that the secret of what we label as prodigy is her born disposition to "sing in the spirit".
In most of the songs where the "prodigy" in her is more apparent is when, through her talented body instrument (her music ear, her vocal cords, etc.), she gathers her creative mind along with the relevant emotions involved in the songs, then dives into her spirit and, in so doing, exhales unto us the music that she finds playing in her spirit.
I will continue to meditate on what is, for now, a simple theoretical point of view.
Thank you, Alan, for that preview of what is a very thoughtful presentation!

Jacques, what a great in depth explanation you offered us about why a prodigy can do the things they can and amaze us.
Shirley Temple and Judy Garland are two great examples Alan brought to our attention. Besides being wonderful singers both of them "had it all." It's as if their whole beings were put on center stage for the world to examine and enjoy. Obviously, things were very different years ago and the demands on both of them was extraordinary.
Angelina is a prodigy like the two of them but her "sing in the spirit" (as you put it) seems to have come from a place more significantly designed to not only have people feel her voice but to touch people's hearts to a degree that she will never leave them. One other singer Alan brought to our attention was Dimash, another true prodigy. I believe he comes closest to Angelina in that he is deeply admired as a person and when he sings he draws a listener in much the way Angelina does. Although he is as humble as Angelina he is more theatrical in his performances and even in the content of his music which somewhat compromises his soulful connect to his audience.
Jacques, I'm going to read your comments again (for the third time). I find them fascinating.

    • @leechap3
      @leechap3 3 роки тому +4

Jaques, I find your comments to be very insightful. I am not a religious person but I am convinced that some artists are able to tap into a realm, "channel" something beyond their mere mortal being, a spirit that has vastly more ability than our limited selves. It may be an untapped area of the brain, or something else, I don't know. I think Angelina accesses a place like this where perfect versions of songs reside and she has trained herself vocally to reproduce them.

Jacques, the last parts you wrote “she gathers her creative mind …” is a very good description of what I also feel where a big part of Angelina’s talent is coming from. @@adriaanrijllart5213 Yes, Adriaan.
Her "musical instinct" is alive and well in her process of creation: that instinct does not operate entirely in her" body instrument", but is activated in some parts of her attentive "soul".
Angelina would need to receive external stimuli for that particular to be awakened.
It could be so many elements of activation, among others would be a certain note, a frequency, some music vibrations or, even, a word or a group of words in the lyrics that, at the right time, triggers her soul's instinctive response.
      Thank you to you!
Let's continue, Adriaan, to enjoy soulfully Angelina's amazing acts of creation!

      @@leechap3 Hey, Lee!
What you describe here is, in part, exactly the " spiritual reality" of Angelina's acts of creation.
I am not a "religious person" either. Jesus, with Whom I entertain a spiritual relationship, considered "religion" to be poisonous for the soul.
What I make gladly mine from your reply are your observations concerning the "realm" or the "spirit" in which spiritual artists "tap" for their acts of creation.
As for the " untapped area of the brain",
then their inspiration would come from their "body instrument", pass their soul (mind and emotions) and find a creative refuge in their spirit.
As for the "place where reside perfect versions of songs", it is exactly her heaven, her "spirit".
      Excellent, Lee, I love it!
Picture in your mind now little Angelina's note to the director of her "wishes" before the recording of I Put A Spell On You, see her physionomy, her gestures" : does she look "possessed" to you?
      She does for me.
If so, then it is conclusive that she finds herself for a moment in that "place" where

Alan, you're getting better and better. I know, it's not about you. It's about Angelina. Well, sorry, but you have to be congratulated for doing a continuing great job of presenting us to Angelina in so many different ways.
Alan, I've also read Jacques' comments and he really said a lot. A great read!
Alan, Shirley Temple, Judy Garland, Mozart! But, you know what? Angelina does belong in that company. Of the three mentioned, I would have to believe she identifies more with Mozart because of her 100% dedication to music. And we do have to recognize that task would be impossible without the unbelievable support from her beautiful family and how she acknowledges their love and guidance in her original song, Shield.
I don't want to take anything away from the other artists you brought to our attention. They are true prodigies and are great in what they do. And, as you suggested, many, many more fit the category. But, and I can only speak for myself, there is something about what Angelina does to me that makes me feel spiritual. I mean, I can feel her spirit, her love, in my heart and, I'm sorry, she has made me a different person. A better person. Is that supposed to happen when she sings to me? Does any other singer in the world have that capability? Or, should I properly call it a gift? I've been around for quite a few years and have "loved" my share of singers but none of them have affected me like Angelina has. I feel so lucky! And so happy! And so glad to help her try to make the world a better place to live by doing what I can. And one of those things I can do is to introduce Angelina to as many people as I can so that they can get a chance to feel her love enter their hearts.

Thank you, Alan, for yet another compelling and entertaining analysis of Angelina et al. All of the comments here are excellent but, if I may throw my two cents in, there are two people who most definitely fit the definition of child prodigies. Sammy Davis, Jr. began his vaudeville career in 1928 at age 3 dancing and singing with his father and Will Mastin in the Will Mastin trio. I could go on and on about his prodigious talent but, suffice it to say, he was an amazing singer, dancer, comedian, actor, played multiple instruments and did gun tricks. For my money, Sammy was the greatest overall entertainer of the 20th century. Another child prodigy was legendary drummer, Buddy Rich. He started right away as a jazz drummer in 1919 at the age of two, and was dubbed "Traps the Drum Wonder" as part of his parents' vaudeville act. On breaks, he would go into the orchestra pit and play drums with the band. He was one of the best, if not the best, drummers to sit at a drum set. And, he never learned to read sheet music. It was all just natural, raw talent. For today, though, Angelina Jordan is the best living singer and conveyor of emotions I have ever heard! Thanks again for your excellent work!

      Interesting.
I know of Sammy Davis and Buddy Rich but I didn't know they were child prodigies.
If I had known they were prodigies, I probably won't have included them in this video because my priority was to have singers who had an overlapping song with AJ (with the exception of Shirley Temple.)

Hi Alan, it's me again. First of all I want to tell you :don't worry about being repetitive talking about the emotions that Angelina is capable to convey to us. I'm with you 100%on that. In fact, for me that is the main feature that puts Angelina above anyone else on the planet. Emotions oozes out of her. No need to analyze deep into AJ vocal abilities. We all know she can float through the register at will (often on just one note or even a syllable) going from the high belt (I have nothing) to the lower note(how great thou art) but when she looks into the camera and give us that Monnalisa smile she's addressing me, you and everyone else who's listening and watching her. I'd like to talk about this when we'll meet. See you in Kongsberg. By.

Comparing Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at 16 to Angelina's version at 11, is not like comparing an orange with a mortgage. Angelina's is just better at a younger age, IMO! Simple as that.

I adore Angelina. She is the best in so many ways that I cannot even express but when it comes to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"....Judy Garland will always own that song. I think that Angelina and Judy Garland are really so much alike though. Judy Garland sang with so much emotion as well. She was one of a kind. Her tragic life makes me sad. It is really so much better that Angelina has such a loving, protective and supportive family.....she is very lucky.

Hi Alan, Thank you for the comparisons. To complement your thoughts, one suspects Angelina connects emotionally because the timbre of her voice matches feelings like sadness, sorrow, regret, melancholy and reverence. Just by singing, her voice induces emotion in the listener at a primal unconscious level. And that happens instantly and long before the conscious mind interprets words. We see this in many reactors with the first notes sung. The recognition of something special connecting the experience with inner and unspoken sentiment. Keep up the good work.

I can play their songs over and over and just feel the soothing emotion of their voice.....something never felt in all my years by anyone else. Angelina at the very top, Jackie a close second and everyone else way down the scale.

I have followed her since and I am a big fan of her.
But when i discovered Dimash about 4 years ago i got chills and my tears were running down.I have never joined any fanclub for any artist before..and i am a grown woman.
I se some people here commenting that Dimash sings without emotions?!
He wouldn't have fan clubs in more than 164 countries all over the world if he was only singing to himself and without emotions!
Reactors and vocal coaches are crying when they listen to him..and bc of him they(vocal coaches and singers) realise that there is always room for improvement and they get inspired.
Stop talking down other singers just bc "you" prefer Angelina. She would be so disappointed if she knew.

Thank you for contrasting some child prodigies. It is true that many prodigies that predate Angelina relied heavily on the physical presentation aspects of their performances. That is clearly the case with Shirley Temple and Judy Garland, and very much the case with Michael Jackson. It is also true of Dimash where the supporting production sometimes takes over the spotlight from his singing. Diana and Dimash have 'freakish' voices, which are a very large component of what makes their performances successful. There are several of Angelina's contemporary prodigies who have better natural voices than Angelina (ducks brickbats), Amira and Solomia are examples, but Angelina's talent, unlike all the others, is in how she uses her voice alone to draw out the emotional content of the songs better than anyone I have ever heard, except maybe Edith Piaf who had a singular but specific ability in that regard. Maybe one day Angelina will cover 'Non, je ne regrette rien' and put that one to rest. Angelina only gets better as she gets older and more sophisticated in her interpretations and vocal abilities. In time perhaps the debate will become less moot. I hope I am around then :-)

Both Dimash and Diana are spectacular vocalists but neither conveys emotion as subtly and beautifully as Angelina does. For example, Diana's 'Wicked Game' is an astonishing vocal performance but it doesn't compare to Angelina's understanding of the the angst and pain of the original by Chris Isaak. One is astonishing, the other is beautiful. 😎

(for me) Comparisons are not always a critique. The quote used in the post was "comparisons are odious".

Unfortunately, something that people don't understand about emotions, is that for vocalists, the more technical they are, the more emotions they can carry since this is why they train their primary instrument i.e, their voice! This is why any singer is required a certain level of technique in order to transmit emotions and feelings! But I have to confess that I don't like his singing. Not one little bit. Perhaps that's because I'm not a fan of opera and his style seems very operatic to me. He has a spectacular vocal range, but most of the time that just feels like a gimmick to me.
However, since we're talking about emotion here, I'll say that Dimash sings with a LOT of emotion. I'll give him that. But when I listen to him, the emotion is all his. I simply don't feel it ... at all.
The comparison of Dimash to Angelina both being prodigies is a fair one, but comparing their singing will always favor Angelina, in my opinion.

Angelina is NOT a child prodigy. She is a unique and powerful singer who just happens to be a child right now (but not for long!)

I must humbly disagree with your contention that Angelina is not a child prodigy. Here is the definition of "Prodigy"
Prodigy ~ noun 1. An unusually gifted or intelligent (young) person; someone whose talents excite wonder and admiration
By that measure alone there is no doubt in my mind that Prodigy is correct in describing Angelina.

Same was said about Joss Stone, then she grew up and have to compete with every adult singers of her genre who sounded just like her. Joss is still a good singer, but there are too many singers just like her. Angelina will be the same.

She sings from her guts. That's where we get a connection with the universe. Also when Dimesh sings my ears seems to be listening to Persian songs. As you know we used to be one country not too long ago.

Talking about artist carrying the emotional message I can only think of Lara Fabian Live performances (1990/2000 +++till present). She is above all a story Singer from her cover of Barbra’s “papa...” to “Caruzo” via “je t’aime” and “je suis malade “ just to name a few. She sings in yr language as well if you want to.

Jackie has been around for quite some time, and for some reason has never quite "caught on" (Superstar status) even though some of her newer work has gone over to Pop... I hope this does not happen to Angelina since she prefers to sing Jazz. Norah Jones is a great jazz singer, but at age 41, hardly does anything these days. She did have Angelina sing at her concert in Korea back in 2017. She is a very nice lady to take Angelina under her wing.

In the so called classical music world most of the current international concert pianists and violinist to mention just the two instrument that dominate the concert stage, we’re or are prodigies from Martha Argerich who is now in her 70’s who played a major classical piece with a full orchestra at 8 years old to Christian Li 11 years of age who is currently playing the circuit. Far too many to list here.

Dimash is an incredible singer. However, I feel like he selects his songs in order to show off the impressive extremes of his vocal range and power. I find it very impressive, but it doesn't create any emotional connection for me.
On the other hand, I feel like Angelina selects her songs in order to tell an emotional story of a life experience. It is like she selects songs that are already fantastic but then infuses scoopfuls of feeling, emotion and personal connection into them. The result is that her impressive skills just bubble up throughout the songs, even though she didn't select the songs to show off those impressive skills.
Also, by they time Angelina is finished, she makes previous renditions of many of those songs to appear to have been "works in progress", as she adds all of the final touches to them to make them not just fantastic but complete and superb. I looked up the word "superb". One definition is "impressively splendid". That seems to fit nicely. When Angelina is finished with a song, I often think that it would be impossible for someone else to improve upon it.

Ed Schultheis I have to agree with you in the way you describe Dimash, most of his songs follow a formula to show off all of his singing abilities, like all his octaves,in that way his singing become more like a circus act than really good singing, and in the long run it get boring, but on the other hand Angelina I can listen to24/7,and in a way I do that,I listen to her every day, often for hours.

How can you talk about child prodigies and not mention Michael Jackson?

  • @rayb3117
    @rayb3117 3 роки тому +2

I have no clue how you think any of these other kids are child protogies? Just because they all sing? To tell how good she really is, you have to listen to I Put A Spell On You. She did that at age 7. Angelina scored that entire thing. I dont believe any of the artists you compared to Angelina are child protegies. Angelina Jordan probably comes closest to that moniker just because, she does the musical scores to everything she covers or does. Emily Bear is a child protegy for piano, she started playing at age 2.

Danileya Tuleshova is another child prodigy that is terrific. Dianna Ankudinova has changed the face of music with her fantastic control and her yodel. Comparing Dianna and Angelina is ,to me, like comparing Arnold Schwarzeneggar to an Olympic figure skater . I love both and think , comparatively , that they are both great in their own way, Your video is , again, quite good.

I have listened to Dimash 5 times now, and he does absolutely nothing for me at 75. I have experienced most of the great vocalist of our time and he is not in that category at all. I get no chills, no loss of breath, nothing from his contortions and freakish sounds. His performances leave all to be desired, and nothing worth experiencing. Not even close to being in the same lane as Angelina Jordan

Any attempt to sing "show must go on" inevitably leads to failure.
Dimash is capable of inconceivable vocal acrobatics, Angelina has also always surprised us with the quality of her voice and her precocious ability to sing in jazz style. The problem with this song is that it was written and recorded by a certain... Freddie Mercury, and he did it when he knew he was dying. Singing "Show must go on" as you die... no one can give more feeling to this song (even if a thousand performers try to sing it).
Speaking of child prodigies, there is a girl barely older than Angelina, Alma Deutscher (Feb 2005).
At the age of 9 she composed an opera.
    At 7 a violin concerto.
    At 10 a piano concerto.
She can do things like this 😮
    ua-cam.com/video/hvECZ_ZXGqs/v-deo.html
Make a waltz with ambulance sirens....
    ua-cam.com/video/W0xMpLXQNvM/v-deo.html
Alma's opening presentation is a statement of her mentality.
Interestingly Alma, like Angelina, is out of her time.
