Now we need the reverse type of filter, to remove all these defects (halation, softness, grain...) from old 16mm, Super-8 and similar recordings effectively! Why would anyone want a degraded image anyway? The real world seen "live" does definitely not look like an S8 movie, or even a 35mm one: Only very recently are we coming close to shooting realistic-looking, high-fidelity images. What we do not have is such images of things, places and people who existed while only primitive (chemical film or analog TV) technology was available. THESE need our attention!
There is a subjective artistic aspect to film that can be desirable to convey a certain nostalgic feeling to an audience. So it's another tool too keep in your arsenal as a filmmaker. Definitely not necessary for everything!
