I have had the MS271 Farm Boss about five years now. One thing I learned the hard way: the bolts to release the cover on top appear to be captive, but they're not held in very well. I lost one in the woods when I was cleaning up standing dead wood. It took quite a while to find that little guy in the brush. Not really a pro tip: more like a "don't do that thing I did" tip. Might be worthwhile having a couple spares in the garage.

I am 70 years, got my first saw when I was 16, i have used about every brand from Macs to Stihl the new saws are so much more convenient than the older bigger saws. Power to weight ratio is one of the most considered things I look for plus ease of starting.

That's a good little saw. Pretty light and had decent power. I like the stihl and husky brand, however I went with the echo cs590 when I was searching for a good firewood saw. I've had mine for 10 years and went through hundreds of chains and 3 bars without even servicing it! If you ever decide to get another saw, try one and throw a 24 inch bar it and you'll absolutely love it! Nice info and you won't be disappointed.

stihl started making chainsaws in 1929, husqvarna started making chainsaws in 1959.

I had a Husqvarna 445 and I agree that there are too many steps to start it. I traded it for the MS250 which is essentially the same 45 cc saw. The Stihl is simpler in my opinion to start but between the two I found that the overall performance between those is the same. My new 291 appeared to be very similar to the 455 Rancher but I went with Stihl.

Still not have used my new MS291 yet.
Waiting for my 1982 Stihl 028AV Super and 1993 Stihl 021 to stop running. Both still going.

I just got the MS 291 , cut 2 22" white oak logs bar was smoking and chain dull , not delivering bar oil . I replaced chain still no oil got 2 more cuts . I sharpened the chain and cleaned the oil delivery area which was clean as new . Then It started oiling the bar and got about 8 cuts . Refill tank for gas and oil and it won't start anymore . Each time starting it from new was about 20 pulls . Have premium premix in it and premium Stihl bar oil . Also while running on the ground it dances like a rhino. It's going back to Stihl dealer in Milford PA tomorrow . Went to Lowes today and bought the 455 Rancher X cut . Started right up and cut up about a cord of wood with it . The rancher is got more power and really digs and cuts fast . The rancher does fatigue me quicker as its just got crazy punk when you're not leaning on the log . So so far the Stihl is a loser out of the box and the Husq wins because it runs and is a beast . I will leave the Stihl for the wife .

Ok first off I agree both Stihl and Husqvarna are excellent saws. However the Husqvarna company has been around a lot longer than Stihl company but not in the chainsaw market. Stihl made their first chainsaw in 1926 where Husqvarna made their first chainsaw in 1959. Just saying for basic info. Lol
I have ran a bunch of different saws from many manufacturers and honestly I don't think you can get a truly crappy saw as long as you stick with name brands and one sized for the work you want to do with it. In 9ther words don't get a 40cc saw with a 16 or 18" bar to cut down or buck a tree that's larger than 24" in diameter. Lol

I got a 260 and a 291. After rebuilding my 291, Im loving my 260 much more. 291s are held together with self tapping screws and the cheapness shows

Have owned several brands and have stayed with the Husky and Stihl over the last few years, but I'm going all Stihl now. I'm looking to replace my 026 and 028 with the 291.

if were nit picking the stihl off position should be momentary like the husky. nothing worse than pulling the saw over 3 times then realizing the switch is off. that never happens with the husky that automatically goes back to on

When it comes to the pro saws I would say they’re about even for the most part. Husky blows Stihl away in the 70cc class though with the 572xp and the 90cc class (the Stihl 661 is a dog). Stihl has a better saw in the 60cc range with the 400c and the 50cc class I’d say they’re even.

Stihl fuel and oil caps leak and just suck. The new 445 has a flip style caps that work. Both saws are Farm and ranch. The 291 does not put out enough oil for a 20" bar. The two in my fleet (older) have 18" max and if you start heavy cutting they need to run time out of the wood to oil the bar. 455 have no problem with 20"bars and 3/8 .050 chain. Buck up for a MS261 or MS362 . Replaced the 291 with 362 as the bar and chain were just getting cooked by some crews. The 455 are heavy they just clean the intake air better and handle user abuse. Most important is the dealer near you. Their all just junk of you can't get it repaired. Never buy from a none service retailer. Your not going to save much and with out service , let's say it again. When broke they are all "junk". Enjoy your saw, I'm just not a fan of the MS291. The lack of oil output for the bar. Fuel and oil caps suck. Are the big two for me.

I guess it just depends on your chainsaw needs. Obviously, for commercial use there are better options that are bigger and more powerful. However, for residential use, I find the 291 to be a decent option.
