    This is a fantastic insight too. Perfection These are high paying jobs after military. If I had to do it all over again, yes, the Air Force would be the way to go. I love aircraft and everything there is to do about them. All of you should be very proud for knowing a very specific industry. Hats off to the Air Force.

    I've seen C-5's land and take off. It is unbelievable!! When a person watches a C-5 take off for the first time, you feel like it will NEVER get off the ground! It seems impossible; especially when there are vehicles, helicopters, and thousands of pounds of equipment on board! It's facinating!!

    With Regards to the C-5A -vs- AN-225 debate...
    Lockheed C-5 Galaxy - versus - Antonov AN-225 / 247 ft - length - 275 ft 7 in / 223 ft - wingspan - 290 ft / 6,006 ft2 - wing area - 9,741 ft2 / 64 ft 11 in - height - 59 ft 4 in / 4 - engines - 6 / 43,000 lbf - thrust per engine - 51,590 lbf / 172,000 lbf - total thrust - 309,540 lbf /
    833,000 lbs - MTOW (Max.Take Off Weight) - 1,323,000 lbs / 5,162 nm - range - 2,430 nm / M0.71 - cruise speed - M0.78 / 287,000 - max payload - 551,000 lbs.
    While the C-5A may be "One" of the largest (number 6, out of 10)... it's certainly Not the largest. The Only way it beats the AN-225, is in height... but, Only as measured at the top of the vertical stabilizer wing... the AN-225 is taller to the top of the fuselage. Yes, I know... the AN-225 suffered some pretty nasty damage and destroyed the front quarter to a third... however, is rebuildable... and they Do have another Mirya, that is over 60% complete... possibly closer to 70%.

    • @ixnorp4270
      @ixnorp4270 Місяць тому

      Not really a debate, unless you are an insecure Russian. The AN-225 is a six-engine aircraft. The C-5 has four engines. They aren't in the same class. But where they are really different from each other is total airlift. C-5's are in the air daily. The -225 only flew one to two missions a month. And now it doesn't fly at all.

    What's amazing about wheels is, how much weight and the force of impact they take when they hit the ground. Besides engines, wheels are up there of importance, but they get less appreciation.

    • @guywhite1004
      @guywhite1004 2 роки тому

      It has that many wheels to be able to land on less than ideal runways (dirt) so as not to dig itself into the runway but to compact the earth under it. A requirement that the DOD asked for. Also it weighs less than a 747 but can carry more weight due to the outer skin design. I toured the C5 assembly line back in '72 at Lockheed in Marietta. Beautiful plane!

    I remember in the early 1980s I was attached to an F-14 Squadron vf142 and we arrived in Naval Air Station Roosevelt roads in Puerto Rico because we were serving as the enemy attacking an aircraft carrier that was practicing to be deployed to the Mediterranean. Along Came the Air Force with their FB 111 aardvarks and it was impressive to see the C5 Galaxy aircraft arrived prior to the f111s. they seem to float in the air arriving in slow motion, it was a spectacle to see one after another Landing. the operation was impressive in how they were able to offload all the equipment quickly and prepare for the arrival of the f111s.

    I wish Lockheed would build a new version of its legendary L-1011. The C5 is a beautiful machine and has performed flawlessly. Lockheed has excellent engineering teams that can turn impossible reams in to reality. The Lockheed L-1011 was a plane far ahead of its time. Of course none of these plane can accomplish anything without their highly ground and air personnel that can all these technical capabilities into a meaning and efficient "Service".

    It really doesn't need the 28 wheels to support the aircraft. There was a requirement in design for operation off of unimproved airports. I believe it was tested but never really used. A 747 weighs in at nearly 1,000,000 LBs and it has less wheels.

    • @DizzyDad
      @DizzyDad 2 роки тому +1

      True, the c17 max takeoff weight is 585k pounds versus 747 max takeoff of 700k - 987k pounds. I google fact-checked :) Wingspan of 747 is 224.5 ft compared to c17 at 170 ft. We should be watching a 747 video right now, and the c17 has waaaay too many wheels to justify itself
