The giant LOG DOGS is what attracted me to the Dolmar, along with the reasonable price at the time. I own a Dolmar 64, it was before Dolmar was bought by Makita and mine was made in Germany. It can be upgraded to an 80 with an expansion kit.
Called felling dogs out west, mostly used in felling trees. They hold the weight and position of the saw motor when making flat or angled cuts into the butt of the tree. Longer dogs create a gap between the saw motor and the tree for chip clearance. Most pro saws come with one dog but you can add a second. Can be used for bucking like you show, but if you have to lever and push the chain through the cut your chain is way too dull! Also makes the saw sit up with the bar above the tailgate for easier chain adjustments and filing etc. Fifty two years and counting working with chain saws.
I love Dolmar saws, l have of the early made in Germany. My wife got it on a auction for 7.00. I spent 6 for a carb kit. Love these saws.
I have to admit Taryl you are the most entertaining and informative small engine mechanic I have ever seen. You really are great just amazing.
I have seen almost all your videos and just love them all.
P.S. even your skits.
Keep up the great work you are a star!
I always called them dogs
I've had several saws, from little to big. One was a little McCollugh Mini Mac or 120? It didn't come with spikes, but I installed an accessory kit that consisted of two pointed pin like spikes. It helped a lot.
Surprised Taryl didn't bring up the crutch factor: Using the spikes to compensate for a dull chain.
Yes I don't know what a bucking spike is for leverage
I knew that 🤕👍
It's the dog that bites the tree.🐕🌲
As a former groundsman in a tree service I can honestly say this is a good rundown on the dogs and the proper use. When you are undercutting on trees that have been fell it's nice to hang the saw on the bark to take the weight off your forearms too.
Wow a Dolmar. Very nice saw, too bad Makita bought them and is ending gas engines.
I'll second that. Dolmar made the best string trimmer I've ever owned. Can't get another.
I sometimes find myself using my dolmar trimmer to cut down trees 😅! @@chubbyjohnson5480
the 5100 and the 7900 were legendary saws.
Dolmar claims to be the first chainsaw.
I have a few concrete saws from them also Makita same thing.
Excellent saws.
Felling dogs
If ppl dont know what those are...THEY SHOULDN'T BE USING A CHAINSAW!
I had an old craftsman that didn't have the teeth and I'll never own one without them again. It's something to keep in mind if going the battery operated route. I noticed several Ego models don't have them or have useless plastic nubs.
Bought a Husky 572 and returned it the next day. Powerful saw with a tiny log-dog on one side and a cheap plastic chain sprocket cover. Went with a Dolmar due to the big dogs and metal parts.
I like that Dolmar Taryl. How many cc is it?
64cc
Dolmar was an excellent equipment brand. I've had a lot of their stuff over the years. All of it was the best.
aka DOGS
Ya like Dags?
Hell I never knew what that was! Thanks Taryl,....you the best! And that Stihl was kicking arse and taking names !!!!!
Mine is plastic on my Stihl 170, ordered metal one's from Amazon
I always call them "dull chain override spikes".
Mint bucking Spike. Teradactal
why is it 2024 and automatic oilers leak when they are not in use? i always come back to my saw with a puddle of bar oil that has leaked out of the oiler when not in use. makes such a mess
Sometimes the bar oil is thin enough to flow right through the pump if it’s warm outside and the bar oil is intended for cold weather.
Sometimes the bar oil cap vent is plugged and the tank builds pressure with daily temperature fluctuations. Sometimes it’s sawdust debris jammed in the oil pump creating a gap and sometimes it’s just a worn out pump.
It is definitely a nasty mess of a recurring problem all brands can suffer from and I too wish they would redesigned the system to be more reliable. 🤞
And a lot of the times it's just the residual oil leaking from the bar and oiler after each use.
That's the biggest bucking spike I've ever seen....I had an 066 I was repairing and asked the customer if he wanted me to sharpen up his Bucking spike while servicing it...customer had no clue of what I was talking about😂
I am a chainsaw nut, I work on a lot of saws. I call them dogs and the larger ones I call west coast dogs, those are for big trees with thicker bark. The guys that cut big timber also like to have a full wrap handlebar on the big saws.
That was an odd way to start a chainsaw. He pulled the rope all the way out and then gave it a quick tug.
That’s stilch’s easy2start system, spring assisted starting rope
@@modoc852 Oh, I see. Never heard of it before. It almost looked like he was fake starting it that made it looked odd but I see that's just how it works. Thanks for the info.
That's interesting but I don't care about the bucking spikes if the bucking saw don't run.😅
Buck yeah
Taryl is the MAN, please make a modern Loafer no deck mower with push mower bolted to front of a no deck mower. Most mower decks are a pain to work on, worn out belts, lengths are hard to get, parts are worn out. even if you raise the mower still hard to work on , loafer is better. Also the best front mower motor would be a old riding mower electric start engine with coupling to bolt on mower blades. so you can electric start front push mower engine. SINGLE CYL FRONT PUSH MOWER ENGINE ELECTRIC START W BLADE NO PULLYS OR BELTS BOLT TO REAR OLD NO DECK SINGLE CYL RIDING MOWER
This video
Demonstrates why you are not allowed to retire Taryl!!! 😂 👍👍👍
The First time I used my stihl chainsaw back in 1998 I noticed the advantage of having these bucking spikes on the machine. And I never knew what they were called until now, Thanks to you!!!
In western Canada we called them felli ng dogs, I used to be a Stihl dealer and worked a lot with the forestry in dustries.
When I started logging in the early 1980's none of the saws (here in Norway) had bucking spikes. Is it bcs I learned and developed my skills without those attachments when I fell a tree or buck it (I've bucked 1000's of trees and never understood the need for spikes)? Or is it bcs they're just a nuisance and right out dangerous when I glide the saw down a 100 foot spruce (such spikes would either snag my body or the log)? In any case, I now remove any evidence of such spikes whenever I pick up a new saw. To me they're just marketing trash.
I got my order. I ordered during your special 20% off and came with the signed baseball card of uncle Andy. I appreciate that that’s really nice. I am going frame it and keep it in this no joke I really like it. Thank you.
It's for Buckin' ! I added the OEM 2nd one to my CS600 a while ago.
It's Bucking good fun!
I mow the grass with my chain saw.
i run western dogs on my 395s 28-36 inch bars. mostly you jam them in the wood to hold your saw in place while you do other things , or one hand the saw, jam the dogs and use the saw as a handle to get on trees 3 plus feet around . . i love Taryl but you need to watch Jack from Hotsaws101
When I first started in the forestry business, the older guys called them "felling dogs" or "felling spikes", and a lot of them took them off and put on a smooth edged aluminum plate because they claim the spikes will wear out your anti-vibe faster.
You need bucking spikes when the saw doesn't have the horsepower, the chain isn't sharpened correctly, and you lack the muscle to make a powerful thru cut and git 'er dun.
Here we call them dogs
I didn't see it buck at all... More like "Anti" bucking spike! 😜
Thanks for the knowledge Taryl!
I’ve always called it “Dogs Teeth”, cheers.
I hope a operator could recognize this safety feature.
Hi Taryl and Co.
I didn't know that, but I do now.
I knew what it did, and most are sharp. 🤕
Whoa look at that old battery charger. I have one just like it, was my dad's, said he got it in the late 70s or early 80s.
Thanks TayrI I all always called them dogs. But now I know the proper name.
Beautiful Dolmar, where'd you find that pretty?
Try saying "Bucking Spikes" several times real fast after a few beers!
Thank you for sharing.👍
Thanks Taryl
The bigger and meaner those things look the better your chances of extracting that refund out of Ronnie!
Nice to see the little 009L, they punch above their weight.
I call them Grabby Things because they Grab the wood.
"Bucking Spike"! That's really close to what i call it when it pokes my leg due to user error
😂
That's the Bat-a-rang, that cost extra, very rare and not replaceable!😮
Thanks for the bucking education 👍
I always thought those were to help protect you from kickback. Using them for leverage makes way more sense. I use them for that all the time and didn't even realize that's what they're for.
My Chinese chainsaw's dog is bent. I think it came that way.
Is it me or did the dolmar spikes look like Batman's throwing star
its a bucking good explanation on bucking spikes .
Good stuff, lol.. You going to be at your shop tomorrow…?
Well dog my cat...er' I mean saw!
I use them to hold the saw back blocking wood.
Bump spicks is like a hinge affect when felling
Bucking amazing 😁
It's a leever and it gives you leveridge...!
Thanks Taryl! I see those on my Stilch, understand why they are there, but never knew the correct name. Must always know and use the name so not to confuse parts departments. BTW I need a set of points for my 8 hp Kroller.
Of course Taryl is an expert on Bucking .. just take a gander at his teeth.. now there's your SMILE!!😬
My little Homelite no,Poulan 4018 yes, plastic similar to Stihl shown.
Thanks Daryl for teaching me about bucking spikes today.
I got a Dolmar 64 with 32" bar , full chisel skip chain. Cuts really well and has those same spikes
Dogs DO NOT give the operator LEVERAGE!
They do, however, give the operator secure pivot points when cutting, making cutting easier and more precise.
Another misuse of the word “leverage”, just like using the word “leverage” instead of “torque”.
Torque is leverage measured in ft/lbs or the number of pounds that can be lifted over a foot of leverage. Imagine driving a Mack V8 Superliner with 2000 ft/lbs of torque, capable of lifting a US short ton with only a foot of leverage. The more torque the more work can be done. Torque is more important than horse power for many reasons. That is how a brake dyno works, keep adding weight on the brake lever till the motor can’t handle it. I am talking old school dynos and we did a bit of this when I studied tractor and engine testing at Ag College. One of the dynos we used pumped water with the flow restricted for the same result. Very interesting stuff.
It creates a lever.....
My 12" electric DeWalt has horizontal ribs instead of spikes. Nice little saw for small properties.
We call them feller dogs. There's a difference between west coast dogs and east coast dogs. And there's your dinner!
What a bucking joke 🤣
That Schumacher Electric battery charger in the background was one of the most reliable little chargers I ever had.
I love watching your videos. Even when you show me something I already know.
Very good video. The bucking spike helps you bite the wooden trunk as if it were the incisors of a beaver but in this case with the chain saw. This way you can secure it and stabilize the saw. So that the log or saw does not jump in your mouth and hit your tooth or lip. This way you can have more leverage when cutting the wood with the teeth, I mean the teeth of the saw you are using. It is also important to use safety glasses as long as it is not the first time that a saw bites into a piece of wood, the pieces fly and hurt the worker's eyesight. Always wear glasses. It is also important to clean the teeth of the saw after you finish using it and inspect them carefully to locate any defects and correct them. Teeth are the most important thing and it is worth ensuring their life. For this you can get a large brush at any hardware store. You won't need toothpaste for those types of teeth. Some simple detergent can do the work in this case. Just make sure your teeth are always clean and the chain is always lubricated. Greetings to all.
When will the "Taryl's teeth - Ultimate bite" line of chainsaw spikes be hitting the online store?

You know, I would've thought that at my age of 57 id would've lost all my immaturity! So why did I laugh when Taryl said its a "Bucking spike" 🤔
Hello Taryl
Those Ants are Pissed.
I didn't know that!
First my friends 😊
Pretty neat. 👍
