    I hate how people think of rodents being cheap and easy pets! All animals can be quite expensive, and rodents are no exception! This is just a misconception spread by chain pet stores trying to sell their animals. It's great that you are spreading correct information and educating people on their care! Keep up the good work!

      Couldn't have said it better myself 👍. I'm not a mouse keeper but rats and Guinea pigs and the living conditions I see from people who haven't done any research is horrible. They only look as far as what pet shops sell and bad advice they give customers.

    i DIY almost everything i can for my mice,

    Thank you for all your advice! I’ve got 5 female mice all living together in a large bin cage which was actually 2 bins that I connected together, it’s over 800 sq in. They used to live in a smaller bin cage which was about 465 sq in, so they got quite an upgrade. Thank you so much! ❤️
    I also have a question if anyone has experience with this: I have one male mouse which, obviously, I can keep with my girls unless I got him neutered (which is a bit pricey) and I know keeping two males is a bad idea. However, I feel he is kinda lonely because mice are social animals; usually a male would live with females. So I’ve been researching African Soft Furs. There are two pet stores near me that sell them live, and I’d be looking for two females that have not been with males (so they aren’t pregnant.) however, I’ve had trouble finding that. If anyone has had experience with them and getting them as pets plz give me some advice.

    A good plan I've always done when planning to get new pets is to calculate out their monthly care cost and the put that money aside for a few months prior to bringing them home. That will a) let you see how well the pet will fit into your budget in practice before actually getting them, and b) the money you squirreled away can now serve as your money to get them set up and/or be kept as an emergency fund.

    a lot of stuff in my mouse Jorge's cage is homemade. Any boxes I can find I make into multi chamber hideouts or bridges, tunnels, hanging toys and puzzle toys. I haven't bought a toy for rodents in a long time because if I want something for him, I make it. I find that popsicle sticks and cardboard are great for making toys. Just make sure that whatever glue you use is safe (I use non toxic hot glue). When you make them a lot of things, you are recycling, and you are saving a lot of money.

      I disagree honestly you have to start somewhere and for kids 11+ where it’s good for starting to learn how to care for a pet and manage money. You have to start somewhere and starting with something more difficult like a larger or more exotic animal can be disastrous for both the animal and the person trying to take care of it. While I still think that you need to be prepared to take total responsibility of your animal and it’s welfare and how you care for it. It’s good to be able to start with an animal that won’t cost a fortune and isn’t a large commitment like s dog that lives 10+ years.

    personally,
    i bought a 30 gal tank that was on sale. i spent $130 total for the tank and the screen top
    i initially got aspen shavings which was $5 a bag, but ive switched to hemp $25/8lbs. hay is around $5. cardboard and paper bedding is free.
    the initial food mix i bought was $5 for two lbs. the rat food i use now was around $10 for 3 lbs, in addition to a homemade mix of organic seeds and grains (oats, sorghum, spelt, millet, pepitas, flax, sesame, hemp seeds, pea flakes, banana chips) which costs around $50 to order upfront.
    i bought most of their toys from shein bc i have a small budget. i got a hammock (that i dont use), bridge, two houses, a coconut, anx 5 chew balls. I'd say it was around $30 for all of that. i also got an apple wood chew at tractor supply for $5.
    the bottle (kaytee 6oz) was $13, the bottle holder (wet your whistle) was $22. i spent an additional $10 on magnet tape for the bottle that ended up not working out, but it still counts tpwards the set-up expenses. and the wheels were $40 in total. i have a 6.5 and a 10in silent spinner.
    i only paid around $36 for my 5 girls, but had to pay $30 in gas to pick them up.
    in total i spent around $420 upfront. significantly more than i paid up front for any of my rescued dogs. at most ive paid $150 for all items necessary for rescue dogs.
    if i could do it all over again i would definitely order the bottle holder sooner instead of trying to fight with hanging it. i alao wouldnt use aspen, even though it is the safest wood bedding it has been shown to cause respiratory stress in studies comparing how different frequencies of cleanings affects mouse stress. it measured ammonia leves in paper and aspen bedding and the ammonia stayed low regardless of type and the length od time inbetween cleanings--but the mice in aspen cages showed a lot more sneezing. it wouldve saved me $20 in expenses.

    As a mouse breeder I can say that for mice, bigger is not better. Mice breeders use evidence based care, and we know from multiple studies that mice experience greater stress in bigger cages, now keep in mind that these studies have little to no enrichment so one could argue that you can provide a big enclosure if it has so much stuff that you barely can see the substrate (that's how mice like it, tons of crap xD), Most breeders will say that a 10 gallon is an optimum size for a male mouse, I personally use 10 gallons for males, male and female breeding and maternity. I have an Alaska cage (80x50) and I would not put less than 4 does in there because they do become more skittish. The info is not outdated, however if new studies arrive (good quality ones) I will be more than happy to upgrade my mice, but for now I work with what science gives me.
    Loose paper bedding is not good for mice, has no ammonia control, it will stink and predispose to respiratory infections, hemp, KDP and aspen are the best options.

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  3 роки тому +2

      You’re right those studies were based in a lab environment, as the majority of studies will be, and lab mice will never be provided with more space unless standards rise but labs won’t do that because it will cost them too much money, unfortunately there’s not enough funding for a lot of research to be done on mice and rats that usually benefits them or works in their favour. Those studies considered very little enrichment as adequate so it’s no wonder they saw an increase in the stress of the mice. I can’t find it at the moment as I’m not on my computer but there was another study conducted where mice had the choice to live in a small enrichment lacking cage and an Alaska size cage with enrichment and they chose the latter. I find it hard to stuff a 10 gallon tank full of more than the basics, once you’ve got one wheel a house and a bowl in there there’s hardly any room for anything else enriching unless you’re constantly switching things out. Do you not provide your mice with softer nesting material?

    • @anietsara5951
      @anietsara5951 3 роки тому +2

      If you then find that study, pls send it to me!
      So we can conclude that the most important thing is the enrichment, that's why I think it is very dangerous to state that the minimum should be 80x50 because if someone half asses the enrichment aspect that someone will have a very stressed and unhealthy mice. So I stand by what I said: bigger is not necessarily better.
      Sorry I wanted to say that is not good to use paper bedding in the whole enclosure, of course using it in the nest is an excellent option!

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  3 роки тому +5

      @@anietsara5951 I'm sorry but I personally feel it would be equally as dangerous for me to promote and sit here telling children "just keep your mice in a 10 gallon or a critter trail it's fine" I have to look through so many photos I get sent of 10 gallon tanks and critter trails that just have paper towel on the bottom, a water bottle and one hide and it's painful to see the lack of enrichment. Someone who can't be bothered to provide their mice with enrichment is likely not going to provide them with a larger enclosure and spend the money on either. I'm big on having enough space and I also regularly promote the importance of enrichment and cage items for mice, if someone does not want to listen to that, they're likely already making other harmful mistakes that are stressing out their mice and causing them health issues. I've unfortunately seen a lot of stressed and bored mice that are bar chewing and hanging off the top of the lids of smaller enclosures and that's equally as bad for their health. Cage size and enrichment come hand in hand and a proper owner who does all of their research will realise this and provide them with both :)

    I kind of just wanted to say this on here.
    I have four rats, two are about a year and a half, and the other two are about nine weeks.
    I woke up to find one of my older rats not walking, so we decided we should call the vet. We called him and he said he would be able to do it today. My other older rat had a really bad tumor so we thought we should do them together. They never would be separated and they loved each other so much.
    This was so hard for me. I never thought two of my babies would die on the same day 😭. I miss them so much.

    Hempen bedding in bulk is also rather cheap (I forgot how much exactly), but it goes a long way.
    On food I have nothing to add to the video. But on treats: I used sunflower seeds from my garden, and when I'm cooking I tend to keep tiny pieces of veggies etc to the side, as add-ons for their diet.

    Here to confirm that having at least $200 (roughly) for an emergency vet fund is a good idea. 😅 I just spent $180 on my own pet mouse a few weeks ago. She had some kind of inflammatory problem that caused hair loss around her face, mucus around her eyes, and very itchy skin. Eventually her scratching got so bad that she created an open wound on her face, so it was necessary to take her in (though she already had a vet appointment scheduled before it got to this point).
    The $180 I spent covered the appointment, anti-inflammatory medication, and an antibiotic for her open wound. Her condition has cleared up a bit, and she’s finally growing some hair back on her face, but I’m worried that whatever caused her initial inflammatory response will come back and so I’m not sure what costs will be coming up, if I will have to keep her on medication, etc.

    I too thought mice would be cheap, now I spend about 500,- € just on their home. 😂
    It's a diy cage with 120x90x90 cm out of 3 storage racks with two level in total and 5 doors at three sides to be able to clean it. I think it was about 250,- in total by now. Also I needed 30 kg of beding because it is up to 30 cm deep and 1 m² big. And in a big cage there is a lot of space to fill too, it was about 250,- € just for beding, houses and toys (tunnels, roots, wheel, bridges, rope, ...). For food I spend another 100,- I think but it should least some month and it is high quality. Also I've got some food in ears like some sorts of millet and flax and sunflower heads and so on. 😁 I know I'm crazy.
    Soon I will drive to a foster home to pick them up, I'm looking forwart to that so much. I will get a cute group of about 8 to 10 castrated males. 🤗 I really hope they will be all happy with their new home.

    I’m a new mouse owner and feel like a horrible person because I bought a mouse cage from a pet supply store, and feed them with mice food, also from a pet supply store, and apparently these items I’ve bought are completely inadequate for the ethical treatment of mice. So frustrating, and yes I did a lot of research first, but all the information online is hugely varied and contradictory, and no one can agree on anything. I love having mice, but now I’m always worried about whether I’m doing the right things by them :(

    Ive been wanting a mouse for 4 years now. My parents got me a hamster for chrismas when i was a freshman and I didnt know anything about them so I didnt know what i needed and looking back i felt bad for how i started out. For the next chrismas i asked for a nin, just a bin for my girl so she didnt have to live in a 10 gallon tank. It was a little smaller than a 80x50cm but she seemed a lot happier. My mom thought it was to big, and when she passed my mom asked for the bin back even though it was a chrismas gift 💀. Now ive done a ton of reaserch on mice and i want to make it right, but i think im only allowed to get one so im getting one male mouse and planning on getting him a bin i saw that was 40 inches long and ik my mom is going to flip but ive got the money and im gonna make sure that baby boi gets the best i can give him. Hope i get everything i need soon to finally be able to be a mouse mom 🙏

    I have been researching for months with all my intentions set on getting pet rats, however circumstances have changed where I need to rescue a mouse ASAP as my friend can no longer keep her and she hasn’t been keeping her properly ): she has lived alone for at least a week since the other mouse escaped, so I have to buy a set of mice to introduce to her. Hoping to get her as soon as possible but I want to be well educated beforehand to give her the best life. Unfortunately I think I’m going to have to buy the new mice from a local pet shop since I’m unable to find any mice breeders around me 😩

    I'm afraid your video came too late to help me keep my costs down. My mouse was free, being a wild mouse. Her original cage, a Kaytee 1 level starter cage, ran $40. I already had bedding, bowls, food, and a couple of toys left over from when I had hamsters. But then I watched videos, to catch up on mouse care since it has been about 35 years since I used to breed them, and was shocked to find my mouse cage was inadequate. So I ordered a Prevue 528 ($80). I also found that my mouse wheel wasn't adequate so I bought a Niteangel Silent Hamster Exercise Wheel ($27) and a few more toys: Dono Hamster Guinea Pig Toys ($18). Then I watched videos about the more natural environment cages which made my home made ones, out of plastic containers, seem inadequate. So I bought a Niteangel Multi-Chamber Hamster House Maze ($27). And I didn't have much in the way of hanging toys and hanging sleeping areas so I bought Prevue Hendryx 62801 Naturals Coco Hideaway with Ladder Bird Toy ($11), Niteangel Suspension Bridge for Hamsters, Small Pet Ladder ($8), Rat Wooden Climbing Bridge, Handmade Mice Straw Hammock, Parrot Natural Wood Swing, Hamster Cage Hanging Chew Toys ($14) and two PIVBY Hamster Bridge Wooden Mouse Ladders ($12). I also wanted to give my mouse some soil to dig in so I bought Espoma AP4 4-Quart Organic Potting Mix ($10) to put in a shoe box in the cage. And to create a natural floor, to the cage, I bought Small Pet Select Aspen Bedding ($28), Rocks for Succulent Plants or Bonsai Garden, 3lb Bulk Bag ($10), Kaytee Timothy Hay ($4), and Galápagos (05213) Terrarium Sphagnum Moss ($7) and a spider plant ($16). Once everything was in the cage I realized I needed some climbing rope ($17) and I also needed a way to cover the corners of the cage as my little mouse could slip right through the bars: PS Direct Hardware Cloth - 24 Inch x 5 Foot Multipurpose Galvanized Mesh - 1/4 Inch Square Openings ($17). And while I had some food left, from my hamsters, I wanted more appropriate food and treats so I bought Natural Apple Sticks ($10), Kaytee Fiesta Mouse And Rat Food, 2-Lb Bag ($5), TradeKing 1 lb Dried Mealworms ($15), and F.M. Brown's Tropical Carnival Farm Fresh Fixins Treats for Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Rats, Mice ($6). All total (and I'm not done yet by any stretch of the imagination) comes to $382 or 289 pounds before vet bills. Obviously I could have probably halved these costs if I could have gone out shopping but I'm in the highest risk group, for COVID, so I shopped online. Our local thrift stores often carry small pet supplies plus I'm pretty handy with tools but I didn't have any animal-safe wood to use. And if I could have gone shopping I'd have gone with a bin cage but the only ones on Amazon required buying multiple bins which brought the cost up higher than the Prevue cage. Fortunately I had lots of gift cards to use so my out-of-pocket costs were greatly reduced. Still, people need to realize all of these small costs add up quickly so they need to be prepared before acquiring a mouse, rat, or hamster--especially here in the US.

    It cost me around £90 to euthanise & cremate my gerbil!
    You can also insure mice using exotics direct but not always worth it as unlikely they'll get so sick you need insurance to help cover costs. I never bothered insuring my new gerbils but I insure my indian ringneck, budgies & cat as they more likely to have higher bills.
    Insurance for mice is approx £15 each. £65 excess for £2000 a year.
    I would recommend Yvette Rowntree at Scarsdale in Langley Mill if have small animals that need surgery (mice castration.) My local rescue Burrowed Hearts users her too. I also had a vet at Ambivet operate on my budgies toe called Jade McKinlay and budgies pretty delicate so I imagine she could do mice too.
