    That server... he's adorable. Then again, most PowerEdge units are. At least the X20 series didn't suffer from the weird early deaths, or I should say vegetative states that some eleventh generations suffered from, mine included. (My T110 has been alive for eleven years now, but he's only been productive for about eight of those. He's running, but even after a system board replacement, he never acted like his peers during the 2010/2011 era.)

      I have my eyes peeled for a R340 to do a side by side comparison especially for power useage, the r330 changed to the smaller Xeon so not really a fair comparison

    Great video Jim, thanks for the power testing. do you know if this server will be able to install ESXI 8? i'm looking between R230 vs R320 but i found R230 only support E3 and RAM upto 64GB, whereas R320 support E5 and 96GB RAM, thanks

    Hi, great video. I’m trying to build an home lab myself and I’m looking for a r320. If all goes well, I’ll have it next week. You installed server 2022, but I was looking at installing server 2016, or maybe 2019- what is your opinion on the best OS for this 12th gen hardware?

      If you wanting to run windows then Server 2019/2022, honestly there is not a huge difference and if your learning you might as well be up to date rather than a few versions behind, mine has been on for a few weeks now with no issues with a few 2022 VMs hosted in Hyper-V with no issues

      @@JimtheITguy but isn't this server only supported running up to Windows Server 2012 or something? I have been playing around with an R410 or an R230 and although I can install Windows Server 2019 on them just fine, the updates and drivers etc and everything on Dell's website only goes up as far as 2012. So what do we do?

    What would you say the noise is like on the r320? I have a pair of r220s and they are basically silent at idle, I can sleep in the same room as them but I'm finding myself really limited by the lack of PCIe ports, having to chose between 10Gbe or a storage adapter, the r320 would solve that problem if they were about as quiet as the r220.

    • @JimtheITguy
      @JimtheITguy  Рік тому +1

      Alot noisier than the R220s due to the E5 series and potential for more, currently with the warm weather in the UK it's even more so

    • @mjturner
      @mjturner Рік тому

      I have an R320 with an E5-2440, 6 DIMMs, 2 SSDs and 2 magnetic disks and it's nearly silent with a dozen VMs running (much quieter than in the video). Loud at boot and during very high CPU usage, but otherwise pretty quiet. I also have an R220 and the sound difference is not that great. It is possible to tweak the fans via IPMI (see /r/homelab) but I've not needed to do that. Note that I'm running Linux, not Windows.

      I have my R320 with the V2 10 core, 96GB RAM and Server 2019 runing the fans at ~5% that is just fine in a flat.
      Wouldn't want it in th eliving room, but open door to the room with the server is no problem at all.

    I think r320 is better than 330, this had e5 low profiles but up to 10 cores, 330 takes e3 v6 wich are STILL quad cores newer but sower, gonna purchase one with 2430v2 and 16gb to do routering on pfsense

      hi, have you made decision? i'm thinking between R330 vs R320 for Esxi 8, and not sure about the low power consumption compare between thsese two model?

    • @leonardotoschi585
      @leonardotoschi585 10 місяців тому

      @@sunnylm2045 r320 has more processing power, you can get up to 10 cores, but r330 uses less power because it takes the e3 v5-v6 that are all 4 cores running at high clock, but i would not recommend it if you want to do esxi. i would instead go for the r320. I don't know if the latest version of esxi works on them because i still use the free 7.0.3. But you can bypass the cpu check pressing shift + o on boot and entering allowLegacyCPU=true
