Where Did It Go Wrong With Maroon 5?!

  • It's time to try and see the good in a band I am now renowned for disliking. We are going to revisit Maroon 5, however this time I'm reacting to one of their earlier hits "This Love". It can't be as bad as Moves Like Jagger, so let's discuss.

Being a band member in Maroon 5 is one of the best gigs in the business. Make records, tour, get paid… yet no one on Earth could ever pick you out of a lineup. If you’re in the grocery store and a song comes on, you could yell, “That singer sounds like a real $”@&!” No one would know.

The rest of us COULD pick Justin out of a lineup. In fact, he made records, toured, got paid, and now has one of the fastest growing youtube channels. AND, we haven't seen weeks of reports of Justin cheating on his pregnant wife, like that maroon 5 douche. Just because you're brain damaged and would suck off any Maroon 5 member doesn't mean the rest of us would. I wouldn't be able to pick any member of that group out of a lineup for my life! They literally only appeal to pathetic women who don't have better taste.

Oh, shiny new (to me) guitar! Truthfully Adam Levine is the visual representation of the word creeper. There’s something so slimy about him. I vividly remember this young girl busking outside our local supermarket, doing the most god awful Maroon 5 set from Songs About Jane, full of angst, trills, vocal fry, voice cracks, it was truly horrendous, and hearing the lyrics in the context of her voice was so gross, I’ve never really been able to listen to them since. I liked that album and had high hopes for a pop band from USA (my favourite was Harder To Breathe). I quickly moved back to mostly European bands- until my daughter came home from school singing Teenagers by MCR. I said “Ooh, I quite liked them”, bought The Black Parade album (as I’d only ever heard the stuff on the radio) and am now deeply down the Emo/pop punk rabbit hole. They could have taken a much edgier path.
When I was 15 I was slightly in love with Mark Shaw…

Maroon 5 was my fav band for so long with some of my all time fave songs. This Love specifically is always going to be my number 1., she will be loved 2, and a few others in the top ten.
But I could tell with each album they digressed further away from what made them special to me. The melancholy, kind of dark lyrics with a sense of loss/heartbreak, the funky base and bright electric guitar of James, it felt like a such a unique formula. There’s hints of it but it became more synthesized and “poppy.”
Which was fine, they still had really fun pop bangers and some obscure titles that hit deep emotionally. Moves Like Jagger is like an inflection point, because it still has that James Valentine funky/reggae riff, but they production and lyrics are generic and the sound over produced.
Now it’s just like we all say, it sounds like Levine with background music . Not much of any guitar/band emphasis.
It’s just really disappointing because we know what they’re capable of, and they treat their “band” like a cash cow at this point.

This Love is from an album called Songs About Jane, which I thought was a great record, beginning to end. But they got subsumed by pop to the point where they morphed into something completely different from what they started out to be. I can still listen to an enjoy Songs About Jane... but I don't like anything they did after. And Adam Levine very quickly began to believe his own press releases. That said, there's a video of him doing a fairly decent version of Purple Rain.

This song was charting right around the same time as "I believe in a thing called love". The "videos" (if you remember when they played those on TV) were also getting rotation in that same time period. This wasn't my favorite style of music but I dug it for sure.

Personally, I've never liked Adam Levine. There always seems to be a "chip on the shoulder" air about him and I just can't get around it and I also don't think he's a good stage performer. His Super Bowl performance was terrible.

Indeed this is a lovely song. I haven't done any pointless music pedantry lately, as a result of which hairs are beginning to grow on the palms of my hands, so here goes.. 'bridge' is obviously a MUCH better term than 'middle eight', because what if your middle eight is 12 bars long? Then you'd have to call it the middle twelve. 🤣Nice one Justin. 🎶🌟👍

      @SuziQ. Рік тому

Also, consider the song “Badge,”by Cream. Someone had written “bridge” on the lyrics sheet, and it was mis-read as “badge”. Cream were a British band, yet they didn’t say “middle eight”.

their early stuff was legit great. ...I almost feel it's A.I. Maroon 5 now, or just Adam with a backing track. it's a shame because they had some interesting rhythmic things and interesting chord charges- that was inspiring because no popular bands were doing that

There's that lovely guitar and the beautiful guitar again. Oh, and loved your black spectacles. Cute. I didn't like MOVES LIKE JAGGER. Just trying to make some bucks. And I'm not thrilled with this song either. Does anyone know the names of the other band members? I think the reason they are popular is because of the looks of the lead singer. He looks good on print. And I think he's been in films. He's a pretty good actor too. I've tried to figure out why this band is so popular and I can't. They are just there for me. The band is okay. The singing is okay. I really think it's the handsomeness of Adam. Justin, you should be in films! You'd be awesome! But, anyway, that's what I think. Not a fan of the band and they are just there. But, THE DARKNESS! I saw another article about you yesterday, but it had other bands in it, so I didn't send it to you. VERY IMPRESSIVE! You are popular! Nothing about The Peppers or Maroon Five, lots about THE DARKNESS THOUGH.

I just looked at his IMDB page. Most of his credits are under “soundtrack”. Under “actor,” almost all of those credits are as “Adam Levine” (self). Very few are for actual acting, and none of those few are projects I’ve heard of. Maybe he’s telling people that he’s a good actor?

I remember liking this song for a minute. It’s has a lot of the elements of a classic soul track. What soured me on it was that it doesn’t swing. The rhythm is so stilted it feels like a polka group covering a Stax song.

I used to consider Songs About Jane one of my favourite albums of all time. I probably still do. I used to listen to it on repeat daily on my way to school and never got bored of any of the songs. The lyrics took on a whole new meaning as I got older and I could really appreciate the song writing.
They’ve done what most bands do and transitioned into new sounds over time. Unfortunately for me, I started to give up on them after ‘Hands All Over’ . The pop / chart sound just didn’t excite me and I felt they lost what made them great band.

It's pretty clear they wrote a lot of their early stuff and once the machine could not give them the time to live interesting enough lives to write good songs anymore, they started working with pop producers and their style kind of became all over the map while staying in the pop realm. Today, it's a lot like listening to a cover band, because stylistically they are all over the map because it's mostly from other people.

I think the band jumped on this emotionless music train that everyone else is on right now.
I think people are so confused about what they feel these days, it shows in the art that is produced.
This is why 99.9% of music is absolutely forgettable.

I listen to all sorts of music, for many reasons as long as it resonates on some genuine level (there’s many levels; sometimes it could be on more than one level). I don’t care about who’s in it until media makes me care by plastering it in all our faces inescapably and out of curiosity or if they had a strange death, I’ll research more. “This Love” is more so a song that’s good for M5…but in the scheme of all music…is null. Seems you’re just being polite after facing some consequences for disliking their other terrible song. I only found out who Johnny Greenwood is this year after listening to radiohead’s discography over several years. I finally learned today you’re the guy from the darkness…I’ve never heard any of your band’s songs all the way through. Literally only ever heard the chorus and I don’t think of the actual song. Just from hearing people imitate the chorus (jokingly but enjoying it? Idk) in the one hit song the darkness came out with which was enough for me to never consider listening to the rest/any songs. However I do appreciate your takes as it comes from an interesting place of your experience & is different from other takes in that regard.

    Short answer: yes.
    Popular often doesn't equal good.
On the other hand, this song does sound familiar. I never knew the title or who performed it, but it sounds ok.
