STORYLINE:
US President Bush is back in Washington Wednesday after taking a long route home from Florida Tuesday following the air attacks on New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Bush began the day in Sarasota, Florida but took detours to secure military bases in Louisiana and Nebraska before returning to the nation's capital.
At the first reports of attacks on the World Trade Center, Bush told his Sarasota school audience that "we've had a national tragedy" and said he had to hurry back to Washington.
However, he first went to the air base in Louisiana, then to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, headquarters of the U-S Strategic Command.
Military fighter jets escorted the presidential aircraft.
Bush returned to the White House at dusk.
Emerging from his helicopter, he strode to the Oval Office to prepare for a televised speech to the nation.
While on board Air Force One he took part in telephone conferences with his national security team during the day, and called New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani from his plane.
Vice President Dick Cheney remained in a nearly deserted White House, in a secure basement bunker, with a handful of other top aides, including National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.

That jet up there with them has probably never been so stressed out knowing the nation was under attack and it was his job to ensure the presidents plane was not attacked
I saw in another documentary that the jet pilot’s job was to take a surface-to-air missile (and die) in case someone was aiming it at AF1.
They train for that constantly.
And they know it is their mission to intercept any incoming Ordnance at all cost
There are always armed escorts near AF1.

That minivan at the time was the brand new redesign of the Dodge Grand Caravan! I miss when minivans had column shifters when brand new!
I love seeing the older model Chrysler products back when they were brand new. I feel everything from the 1990’s-2000’s had a mix of things we like in both old and new cars.
I live in Wisconsin and I must say I haven’t seen one of those caravans or voyagers with out rust all over in about 5 years.
Also so lovely that old Suburban (0:50) at the airport entrance and the Lumina (1:20) the soldiers were using.
They even had the Doomsday plane ready

Those are E-4's in the background. So yeah, it's Offutt.
There were Marines surrounding that plane locked and loaded. They didn't inspect that vehicle or check the badges of the other people. Not following protocol. They inspected my truck, my tools, equipment, and my badge. This is fake. Like I said I was there standing outside that plane on the flightline.
