    Great video, I'm surprised you didn't include directions to the bathrooms, you included everything else. For those that haven't pulled targets, it's a whole different thing than electronic targets, both shooting and pulling. Be prepared to be worn out at the end of the day. I wish I had this information for my first SWN, last year. Safe travels, see you next week.

      Yeah one of the things I neglected to talk about that one of my Patreon member mentioned was that you have to be prepared to be in the pits for 2-3 hours at a time and to bring food with you.

    Great video, thank you! I live in the Phoenix area and use to attend the big match at Ben to visit and see my old friends from Los Angeles area who were high power shooters. They were what you guys call sling shooters. The first match I watched was in January and the nastiest weather you could imagine. The crosswind was coming from the west and all the flags were standing flat like they were frozen. It felt like it was 30 degrees with the wind chill. It had rained earlier in the morning, mud puddles everywhere. The match still had a sell out crowd! It was a few years before the beautiful Berger building was constructed. A few years later I went to watch my friends again and they still were sling shooters only. After watch in my friends, I walked down to see inspect the Berger building and for the first time I saw people shooting prone, and about half the shooters were shooting using rest under their rifle. I was absolutely shocked at what I was viewing. I had never heard of F-Class discipline and couldn’t imagine what they were doing. Later my friends explained what was going on. They told me it was the fastest growing high power sport, and that next season they all were having rifles made for F-Class!! Over the years I started watching your videos John, as well as Erick’s, and Speedy’s. I’m an old retired toolmaker and anything regarding precision is still interested to me. Thanks a million for your explanation of what is going on at the matches I’ve visited over the years!!!!

    Great information John. One thing I would tell anyone coming to SWN is try to find a TEAM to shoot with. I have learned more from shooting team events with a wind coach than I learned on my own by ten fold. You can probably verify this from your own experiences as well. Shooting team events lets you learn from the Best Wind Coachs the sport has to offer. Plus, it takes all that pressure of making your own wind calls off the table so you can focus on driving the rifle. The best advise I ever received was from Bob Mead when he called wind for our team last year at SWN, don’t talk, just listen. See you next week at SWN. Keep up the great videos.

    Great video, very practical and said with great class. You're right - fighting for the score can't overshadow honesty, culture and having fun. I'm just starting to get into this, although there is already a large group of great long range shooters in my country (PL). Greetings!

    Great tips john. One additional point to mention is that there is construction on the 17, so having an alternate route to the range would be ideal.

    I’m fortunate to have family out there. So I have a place to stay. In fact I’ve shot at Ben Avery, but not with a rifle. Sporting Clays !
    I will use your knowledge to help me get started. You made a huge difference,

    Thank you for the valuable information. Do you have an insight as to why this event doesn’t use electronic targets?

    • @drolds7246
      @drolds7246 4 дні тому

      I would think 100 shotmarkers would be prohibitively expensive. With 2 pullers, 7 second pit service should be easy to attain. 2 sets of eyes on line cutter shots also helps keep things above board.

    • @johnspadaro4755
      @johnspadaro4755 4 дні тому

      @ I doubt if it has to do with money. I’ll bet many shooters could bring Shotmarkers to the match. If the match organizers needed money to buy Shotmarkers all they would have to do is add a onetime $200 surcharge to the entry fee.

    • @drolds7246
      @drolds7246 4 дні тому

      @@johnspadaro4755 And, a lot of guys just don't like them for bigger matches. Everybody knows they are here to stay, but at this particular match and range, it is going to be pulled targets. Its just a smoother operation.

    At Ben Avery typically the SLING shooters are on the LOW end (1-50) and F-class and F-TR are on the HIGH end (51-100).

    Good video - thanks for posting. Curious about frequency of target crossfires...anything unique about handling those at a giant match like this?

    • @FClassJohn
      @FClassJohn  5 днів тому +1

      They definitely happen but it's a lot harder to identify if it happens because there's 85 positions which means if you're on target 14 then you might get crossed on 24, 34, 44, 54 etc. At SWN last year the same person crossed on me three times on three matches. Super aggravating but what can you do.

  • @codyway7424
    @codyway7424 5 днів тому

    I have a question on lane and relay assignments at the big matches. Is it completely random? Or do they, for instance, try to put the top open shooters on the same relay, and the ftr guys on the same relay, and etc? Our club matches does this and it seems to make sense.

    • @FClassJohn
      @FClassJohn  5 днів тому +1

      @@codyway7424 the first day is pretty random although you will have mostly the same kind of shooters on the line at the same time meaning open or TR although there will be some mixing and then the following days are all seed squatted meaning top shooter to bottom shooter in a row so that as the match progresses, you are shooting with people that are relative to you on the leaderboard.

    • @codyway7424
      @codyway7424 5 днів тому

      @@codyway7424 well it sounds obvious I can’t overstate how important it is to shoot well on the first day for relay reasons.
