As an OKC fan from OKC, honestly nobody considers the supersonics part of the Thunder. We just don't care. I hope Seattle gets a new Sonics team.
But it's important to remember, the ONLY MAJOR PRO SPORT in Oklahoma is the Thunder. We are just glad to have a team and that's why we are fanatics about it.
I wish we got our own team from expansion but it happened how it happened.

this aint got nothing to do with a "fan base" .. each of the 8 teams who want to be included, ALL have a fan base .. duh!!
THIS is a very lengthy process
and it's a process that's complicated to people like you ..
(there's a whole lot of details involved)
there are 8 different Locations that have to come up with 7-billion dollars, IF they want a team ..
THEN there's a bidding process and the HIGHEST bidders will enter an
EXPANSION DRAFT in order to be chosen .. (all 8 will NOT be chosen)
in the END each existing nba team, will lose players in order to fill the rosters of the expansion teams that were selected ..

If the NBA expands to Mexico, it could replicate the transformative effect seen in Canada. Before the NBA expanded to Toronto and the late Vancouver Grizzlies, in the 90's NBA only had 2-4 Canadians like 2-time MVP Steve Nash, Samuel Dalembert, Jamal Magloire, and Rick Fox. The NBA now boasts 24 Canadian players and 12 more in the G-league during the 2023-24 season. Canadian players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Andrew Wiggins, Dillion Brooks, Sheldon Sharpe, Luguentz Dort, Benedict Mathurin, Andrew Nembhard, Dwight Powell, Kelly Olynyk, Brandon Clarke, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Delano Banton, Trey Lyles, Caleb Houstan, Oshae Brissett and Tristan Thompson and six other. The expansion to Canada has significantly increased the league's presence in Canada and brought in a wealth of talent who would have chosen a different sport if not for the NBA in Canada. A similar expansion to Mexico could have a similar effect, bringing in new talent and expanding the global reach of the NBA.

There's no chance that the NBA expands to Mexico City. Some of the problems with that include, but not limited to, high elevation, high crime rates, language barrier, many American families of NBA players not wanting to live in Mexico, traveling time between Mexico City and teams from super far away cities (e.g., Boston, New York, Brooklyn & Toronto) being disadvantageous, and basketball not being a favorite sport amongst many Mexicans when you compare basketball to baseball or association football a.k.a. soccer, or lucha libre.

I think you’re on the right track but I think the NBA should just get rid of divisions altogether. Since the format change to just the best 8 teams and then to the play in divisions have been meaningless except for scheduling. I think the NBA should just go Eastern and Western Conference and while making schedules try to keep some of those division rivals alive like Lakers/Clippers, Philly/New York, Heat/Magic etc. That’s just my opinion because I think it makes expansion easier so you don’t have to balance divisions just conferences.

Just so you know: From what everyone is saying, it appears that Vegas and Seattle are teams 31 & 32, but if the NBA eventually expands to 36, I see Mexico City as LOCK for the 33rd or 34th team!!! Mexico City is larger than New York City, with over 22 million people living there. (over eight times larger than Vegas) Mexico City has 10's thousands of filthy rich people in areas of the city as beautiful as any city in the USA (the area of Polanco is like Beverly Hills with better food). Mexico City, from a player standpoint, has fantastic restaurants. Mexico City has more top 50 restaurants in the WORLD than any US city, including NYC. As for safety, Mexico City's murder rate is lower than 23 of the 30 NBA cities in the NBA so serious crime is not an issue. For example, the murder rate in Memphis, Detroit, Cleveland, and Philadelphia is 8 to 9 times the rate of Mexico City. Mexico City already has a G-league team and is among the top in attendance. Expanding to Mexico opens the market to 133 million Mexicans and is a doorway to the rest of Latin America. Mexico City is only under 4 hours and 40 minutes by plane to NYC and 4 hours to LA, so distance is fine. As for altitude, the NBA has played over 30 NBA exhibition and regular season games there over the last 20 years (the NBA wouldn't play that many games there IF NO INTEREST) without altitude being an issue for players in those games, including the present G-league team. I have visited Mexico City 3 times for work, and altitude was never an issue. I am no athlete, so NBA players should have ZERO issues dealing with altitude (as players in the G-league). Adam Silver has repeatedly mentioned Mexico City as the next wave of expansion cities if and when the NBA expands beyond 32

I have lived in Oregon for 23 years. But, I lived west of Seattle, two different times, for a total of 14 1/2 years beforehand. When I moved here, my loyalties were set to the state of Washington. I have remained true. The Huskies, Seahawks, Sonics, Kraken, Sounders, and Mariners are all my favorite teams in their respective sports leagues and levels. I lived in Alaska from 95 to 99, but didn't get into hockey much because Seattle just had the Thunderbirds. Now that they got the Kraken, I like hockey! I hope they bring back the Sonics so I'll have a favorite NBA team again!!!

We all know how Centre Bell can break players' ears: you only need to look at the last NBA games in there. Montreal is big enough as a market to make it work.
Only, the biggest obstacle is the ownership.
Sure, much has been made of what made Montreal unattractive to players (horrible weather and taxation; language is not as big of a deal since living in Montreal without knowing French is feasible on a NBA salary, just don't expect to live anywhere in the city) and it will probably force Montreal into the luxury tax, and maybe even first apron...

I sincerely believe the hold-up is that they would have move two Western Conference teams to the Eastern Conference (assuming the two chosen cities are Seattle and Las Vegas). Logically the two teams that would be considered is between Minnesota, Memphis, or New Orleans. Even though New Orleans is technically further East than Minnesota, most of the teams within proximity to the Wolves are East teams, whereas all the Texas teams are West, and they're much closer to New Orleans. So the two chosen teams should be Memphis and Minnesota. Minnesota in the East now would become an immediate Finals contender, and a few Memphis teams in the 2000s/2010s might have spoiled for the Finals. I don't know if the other owners would want that. I think they like the status quo.

The talent pool in the NBA is currently the strongest it has ever been. In the 2023-24 season, 140 foreign-born players (25%). In contrast, in 1990, there were only 21 foreign-born players (4.5%). The number of American-born players has decreased slightly (17 less), with 421 in 2023-24 compared to 438 in 1990, despite a larger league size (30 teams now versus 27 in 1990). This decline in American-born players is noteworthy, given the significant increase in the US population by 95 million since 1990. The rest of the world produces more talented NBA players, 120 more foreign-born players than in 1990. This suggests the league's overall talent level has grown and could potentially expand to 36 teams.

This was a great video and very informative. It is time to see the NBA expand. I would love to see the NBA back in Seattle and in Vegas. The problem I see with having an expansion team in Seattle is the fact that it would take years for the franchise to see any real success and I’m not sure that city can take on or accept a loosing franchise. The fact that there is not any generational players coming out of the draft any time soon as well as the lack of star free agents would leave Seattle as a bottom feeder for many years.
Now as for expanding to Vegas… this would be a fantastic for the NBA. Vegas is quickly becoming a sports Meca. I could see plenty of players wanting to play in Vegas. I don’t think it will take very long at all for Vegas team to be successful. The one factor that I can’t see is that Vegas won’t have a team until LeBron James retires. Simply because LeBron cannot own a team and play for another team buried and everybody knows that LeBron Would be the key component to bring Vegas to the NBA. As much as people don’t wanna hear it I can see the NBA, expanding to Vegas and Mexico City before Seattle gets their team back. A team in Mexico City would not have such a high demand for a quick successful team. This would allow the NBA to cross the southern border and start a whole new market. Much like they did and Canada. The demand would not be so high for success considering the people of Mexico City would be happy to watch the game.

While the pool of super stars is only marginally better on a per team basis, the pool of starter caliber talent has increased by at least 5 or 6 times over the past 20 years. Now days, players' prospects for playing time are based more around fit and coaching decisions than actual skill, as the 6th best and 12th best players on any given team are basically the same in talent and skill level. The league has expanded roster sizes to accommodate, and it has also become more lax towards allowing star players "rest", knowing that there is less of a drop off in talent and that it gives more players the minutes needed to show that talent. The overflow of talent is so great that foreign leagues have secured NBA starter level talent much more than ever before, and the league has less interest in giving the youngest and oldest players the minutes and opportunities it once did, forcing many younger players to stay in college or go overseas or play in the G-League, and older players to retire earlier or go overseas, where they once would've been given a bigger role on an NBA team. This proves the league can easily absorb at least two more teams with no noticeable drop off in quality per team.

I think expansion will be quite good for prospects. Every new team adds roughly 20 thousand new player minutes per year, because teams are too talented at this moment to wait for currently bad young guys to maybe be good.
More minutes in general and more bad teams will help get young prospects minutes and opportunity.

  • @McGoogger

Adding more teams would be good for high paying players with the new cba. More guys wouldn’t have to take pay cuts and they could also get more opportunity. Plus there would be less super teams. Not to mention I would just be excited to see what kind of names they come up with.

Most likely, the expansion cities will be Seattle, Las Vegas in the West and probably a toss up with Cincinnati, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Nashville, St.Louis and Montreal as the biggest contenders for a team in the East. (Buffalo won't happen because of how close they are to Toronto and Baltimore won't happen because of DC and Philly).
And yes, it will change everything as it currently is in the NBA. Expansion always does.
Which is a good thing. The league would get stale if it didn't change some things now and then.
Though, I am sure there are a few things we can say we wish would come back.
Kansas City and San Diego could eventually get teams again as well. Though, I have a feeling that Memphis is going to want to keep St.Louis and Nashville free if they decide to move out of Memphis, just simply because there is a lot more money in either market if they go there and I know they are going to want to get a new arena in the near future.
