- Fine tune your drip irrigation system with small shut off valves. Some plants like freesias need water while blooming but can go dormant all summer. Garlic also needs irrigation until it's time to finish maturing. Keeping irrigation to other plants in the garden while using shut off valves to these plants is the answer. In this video The Gardening Tutor shows how to install small shut off valves and some tips for success! Watch our videos all the way to the end because you'll find a recap, extra tips and/or photos after the video.

Thanks Gardening Tutor! I can always count on your videos to be relaxing and informative.
Great idea. Thanks!
You're welcome Maggie. Thanks for watching and commenting! -mary
to make a drip watering system for single plants I use a gravity system with a garbage can filled with water. I use a fishing sinker to hold the tubing near the bottom of the can and plug the plant end of the Tygon tubing with a snug fit screw, then I adjust how far the screw goes into the tubing until I get the number of drips per minute that I want. 1 drip every 6 seconds = 1 gallon per day.
Hi there. Could you post a link to where you got those valves ?
Sure NotSoLiberal, www.wyattsupply.com/
I'm not sure how great their website is. They are my local supplier here in Santa Rosa, Ca. You may need to call them. thanks for watching. -mary
I have a question regarding the mainline hose. Could a too short of a line cause leaks at connectors because of built up pressure? I have about 20 ft of mainline hose (larger hose) and even when my system is off for hours there is still water leaking out.
Hi Paul, It sounds as if there may be a leak in the valve itself. Sometimes tiny bits of debris or rock get in there and the diaphram won't seat all the way down, which allows water to keep leaking out into the line 24/7. If you clean out the valve (unscrewing it and running water for a few seconds and cleaning under rubber o ring) and it still leaks you may need to install a new valve.
I would love to hear how it goes.
Thanks for watching! -mary
@The Gardening Tutor thank you. I was hoping that wasn't the case. I have hand tightened the irrigation valve and it slightly still drips. I will check it out and report back to you. BTW, love the 'holey' gloves idea 💡

What's the brand/name of the organizer you showed?
Thank you for watching NTW. My client bought that organizer at Home Depot. I don't see any name on it. -mary
Hi! Are these valves either on, or off… or is it possible to turn them 45 degrees and reduce the flow rate by 50%?
Morning! They are on or off valve. So fantastic! I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see your salutation. Sometimes i think people don't realize I am real and treat me like Seri. :) Have a great day John. -mary
p.s. I have not tried turning them half way to see if the flow slows but you could try it if that's what you're looking for (or just switch emitters to lower flow).
