    Ok, I've watched a million drip videos and have been installing drip in my yard for years and had NO idea that the fat end of the goof plug goes into the main line. I've always used the skinny end for the 1/4 tube and the main line. This completely explains why I have two goof plug leaks in my garden!! Thanks so much!!

    I must have done something wrong, my main line (spaghetti tube) runs above the ground at almost the same height as the tap, it has a few inline drippers, and a couple dripper extensions hanging down the line. The 2 hanging ones drip a lot but my end drippes do not drip at all. Is this because of gravity, pulling all water out?

    Great video. Just subscribed! I have a drip irrigation system that came with my home. There is a PVC pipe that comes above ground and connects to the flex tubing (main line) you showed here. When I turn on that zone the black tubing disconnects from the pvc and a lot of water comes out. Any suggestions on the correct way to repair this? I only noticed it because all my mulch had flooded out onto the driveway. Glad I only had it set for a few minutes.

      you'll need a "PVC to Compression" adapter to transfer from PVC to black polytube. Sometimes older polytube can stretch and slip out of the compression fitting so you need to replace the line or the fitting. Good luck!

    Thanks for the video, appreciate the southwest specific channel content, I’m also located in Tucson working on your style soil building. However I disagree on it being the wrong way to put the emitter at the micro tube end. It’s much less disruptive to change the value of an emitter, troubleshoot an issue, flush a flag end emitter vs digging back to the trunk line to locate the plugged or defective emitter. If it’s an exposed trunk line, for sure putting the emitter is the way to go. If it’s buried line, your mileage may vary.

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  4 роки тому

      Those are some good points, I don't really use flag emitters so that may be good alternative set up for those. If you're gonna go that route you might want to keep an eye on your system because if any critters come by and chew the emitters off you can run into some issues with flooding :)

We had a new irrigation system installed front and back yards last spring, but I didn't pay attention to the types of emitters going in (I was working at the time and couldn't get out to the yard while the system was being installed and relied on the landscaper for updates). The landscaper has retired so I'm taking on the job of checking all emitters. I can safely say that all of my emitters must be buried underground. The thing I needed to understand was the color-coding for gph.

      Usually anything smaller than 1/4" is referred to as "Micro-Tubing" and will not work with standard 1/4" spaghetti tubing. Different manufactures of micro-tubing can use different fittings so it best to use the original equipment that comes with the tubing, sorry I couldn't have better answer. Good luck!

In my vegetable garden I replace line every 2-3 years or so but in some cases i've seen line need to be replaced every 6 months. I have not tried any acid solution other than vinegar, I have used it with success but it takes some time. Good Luck!

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens

      If you think of it like a light switch, the knob control is more like a dimmer than an on and off switch, you can adjust it to anywhere in between opened and closed. So lets say you have a ten gallon per hour emitter but you adjust the knob so it's only halfway open, then your emitter will only put out about 5 gallons per hour. Hope that helps, good luck!

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  3 роки тому +1

      I don't go into detail here about that, but typically for trees you would use emitters that put out a lot of water per hour, usually 5-10gph emitters and for shrubs you are probably ok with the standard 2gph emitters you see in this video. What's most important is how many emitters you place at each plant and how you space them. You can visit my website and where I have links to several publications on how to properly water trees and shrubs. www.southwestvictorygardens.com/documents. Good Luck!

    Firstly, I wanted to say thanks for creating such an informative video series! My partner and I are in southern Colorado and are setting up drip irrigation for our vegetable garden. We're currently agonizing over how to do 2 rows of grow bags fed by 1 common 1/2" line. I'm looking at one of these two setups:
    A) 1/2" line -> Tee -> 2 spaghetti -> one valve on each spaghetti-> emitters and such
    B) 1/2" line -> 2 valves directly on the line -> emitters and such
    B would be easier and cheaper, but I'm afraid that the valve will start leaking at the connection to the 1/2" line after repeated adjustments without the strain relief added via the tee and the spaghetti in version A.
    Do you find that barbed fittings connected to 1/2" line eventually loosen and leak if they're messed with too much / when you put the valve directly on the 1/2" line?
    I sincerely appreciate your help. Thanks a bunch!

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  3 роки тому

      The goal would be to try to spread the water evenly across the surface of the soil while trying to poke as few holes in the main 1/2" poly line as possible. The more holes you poke in the line to add emitters or barbs, the more possibility for leaks. Rather than poking two holes in the line you can use one emitter and come off of it with a 1/4" "T" barb and run two lines off of the "T" to opposite sides of your containers. This of course is a lot of work but it's the way that I water a lot of native shrubs in native soil. This method uses fewer emitters and also spreads the water around the root zone more evenly

      This is very common, I have trouble as well. When you get the hang of it, using needle nose pliers can make the job easier, but you can also heat up the tubing using a lighter, hot water, or heat gun and it will make inserting the lines a little bit easier. Good Luck!

    How many connection can you use on 1 emitter. I am use 2 line with a T for 1 emitter and only one is working. Does the length off line matter and loops?

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  2 роки тому +1

      You can split emitters with a "T" or even a cross fitting, but you'll only want to do that with a short distance of line and both lines should be equal distance from the split or you can get uneven water distribution. I'll sometimes take a 2 gallon emitter and split it close to the plant so I can have 1 gallon watering from two lines instead of two gallons from one line, if that makes sense. You don't want to have more than about 8' of line if you attach the emitter at the poly tube, if you put the emitter in line, you can run it for a longer distance. Hope that helps, good luck!

    I'm using floraflex 1/4 tubing with netfim woodpecker Jr. Using 6 way splitters from 1/2 tubing, from Amazon, surprisingly seems to work those parts. Anyway, the green tubing from the floraflex maybe isn't the best, the emitters don't fit in it very tightly, some were poking out and at an angle for a second, a few popped off easily. • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  2 роки тому

      Sorry for delay was away on a honeymoon! If you need to run the spaghetti longer than 10 ft or so you are better running a 1/2" poly line and then just coming off of that where you want to water, you won't have much water pressure if you try to run a 1/4" line 20'. You can punch holes directly in the line, even with a pressure regulator the pressure will be so high it will erode a big hole eventually. Good luck!

      Most of the tubing is rated for cold weather, but the timers usually are not. In areas with cold winters I would probably drain the lines in the winter disconnect the timer. Sometimes you can very carefully remove an emitter and replace it, but most times removing an emitter stretches the hole so much that when you replace the emitter you'll have a leak in that area. Best thing to do remove the emitter and plug with a goof plug and replace it with a new emitter. Good luck!

    I don’t like burying the drip emitter so much prefer the closer to the plant: they are easier to remove without buggering the supply line, easier to change out if you need to go more or less gph, and when they finally fail. Downside is are more exposed to elements, add a perhaps unwanted colour to the flower bed, etc., and may not meet a certain aesthetic criteria…

      I actually don't mind leaving it on the surface. It's easy to spot leaks and do any kind of maintenance and add emitters. In my experience most poly tube is pretty resistant in the desert sun. Trying to fix a leak in a line that is buried 12" is no fun and it still degrades over time requiring replacement anyway.

    Very nice but I would suggest putting your emitter onto the end of the 1/4 inch tubing first (if possible) and it will save you a lot of headache, especially if the polytube is already in the ground. Otherwise you are fighting with it twice.

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens

      I use needle nose pliers. You have to work them between the emitter and the tube and gently wedge them out. Once you do that you won't be able to reuse the same hole again without leaking so you'll need to get some "Goof Plugs" and plug the hole using the fat end of the goof plug. Good luck!

    How about the Flag type dripper?? I use and install them above ground into the micro tube near the plant. If there is any type of clog or calcium build up in the emitter, it is very easy to clear the flag emitter by unscrewing the flag, clearing the debris and screwing back in. Also, if you have lack of water flow, with the button style dripper installed into the burried underground mainline, you gotta dig up the micro tube basically following or trace it back to the main line to to replace the button dripper. You can not clear a button dripper. ... So, for this reason I never understood the logic of installing button drippers into the mainline which creates more work to determine lack of water flow issues....????

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  2 роки тому

      a lot of "flag" type emitters are non-pressure compensating, meaning they will put out different amount of water if there is an elevation change, I tend to stay away from them. If they work for you then I would keep using them but I don't keep any in my kit. I personally like to leave my poly lines above ground so that if there are leaks they are easy to spot, i've spent to much time digging for leaks that I don't mind the messy look. But burying is good, and in my experience all lines degrade leak eventually, it's a matter of when not if, so I think it's ok to go with whatever works best for your situation. Good luck!

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  2 роки тому

      Drip irrigation is pretty standard and the tubing sizes are relatively limited. Most of the time you are going to use 1/2" poly tube for your main water supply line and to that you will connect 1/4" "Spaghetti" tubing, sometimes called "microtube". all of the emitters are designed to work with standard 1/4" spaghetti tube, regardless of how much water they put out. Hope that helps, good luck!

    Idk if he said it in the video, but a little tip is to pop the holes in your distribution tubing while it’s cooler outside or if nothing else in the shade. Once that tubing is hot it can be a real bastard trying to pop the hole.

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  2 роки тому

      This is usually more of a problem on thinner tubing, thick tubing tends to stay more rigid even in our hot summers. When buying poly tube I always get the highest quality "virgin" tubing and I usually don't have this problem. Good luck!

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens
      @SouthwestVictoryGardens  2 роки тому

      There shouldn't be any leaking from the poly lines, try pulling on the emitter a little bit to see if that helps to stop the leak, if it doesn't, you'll want to remove the emitter and plug it with a goof plug and replace the emitter. Be sure to use a punch tool when inserting the emitters so you don't make the hole too big. Good luck!

      Watering duration depends on many factors including plant species, soil type, and season. Unfortunately I can not offer suggestions on how long to water without knowing more about all of these things and more. I would suggest two things, first in dry climates like ours it's often good practice to water deeply and infrequently. Deeply and Infrequently. Second, I would consult your local co-operative extension as they might have more knowledge of the particular plants, soil, and climate in your area and could offer better suggestions. Sorry I couldn't be of more help in that regard, I wish you good luck and happy gardening!

      You can run the lines from the emitters uphill and for about 8 feet or so before you lose any pressure. The emitters are "pressure compensating" so they are designed to work with elevation changes. the third method shown, with the emitter in between two lines, will allow you to run the spaghetti line longer distances. Hi, thanks for the video! Is the Rain Bird ½" poly tubing that you use in your video the same as the "The Pipe with the Stripe" poly tubing for sprinkler irrigation that you can get from Home Depot? I'm thinking of getting that, but i'm wondering since it handles upto 75PSI the pipe walls might be too thick to punch the holes for emitters. Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

    • @SouthwestVictoryGardens

      You often see black poly tube with a colored stripe. It makes it easier to identify when installing multiple lines in the same trench. Whether or not it's the same type i'm not sure. It should be flexible and not rigid. Get yourself a good punch and you can punch the holes easier. I've used a very thick commercial grade tubing and was still able to punch through with no problem.

I'm installing about 500 feet of ½" tubing with about 1000 feet of ¼" drip line coming off of that. I'm a bit concerned about losing pressure as I get farther away from the hose bib. Would you recommend going wider than a ½" diameter for the feeder tubes, in order to maintain a higher water pressure farther from the house?

    Great video. Rain Bird recommends that you install the emitter in the 1/2" distribution tubing unless the 1/4" tubing is longer than 5 feet, in which case they recommend that you install it in the 1/4" tubing closer to the plant being watered. • @SouthwestVictoryGardens

      most drip systems are set to run at a lower PSI no higher than say 40. On a standard system with 1/2" tubing and pressure compensating emitters you can run about 300' of line and up to 180-200 gallons of emitters without losing pressure so 60 .5gph emitters should be no issues at all.
