This was when the esports scene was just about getting on track and the Broodwar league wasn't particularly big outside of Korea. So the market was relatively small compared to conventional sports and thus the players' salaries weren't that big. The owners weren't very willing to pay a lot for these video game-playing kids either. Nowadays, players like Faker in Korea reportedly earn up to 5 billion won (roughly 5 mil usd) a year. (Funnily enough, he is playing for SKT, the team Bisu played on.) The esports players of today all have their thanks for the pioneering Broodwar players of the old days.
