Snap! This summer I sold my X-Pro2 and 16-55 and replaced it with the X-T50 and 16-80 while retaining my 70-300 and 8mm. This will be my weight and bulk saving travel kit - plus IBIS - our next big trip being Namibia in March. I will be diving in Papua in November but taking carry-on so it’ll be my beloved GRIII. I too found the Smallrig handgrip too snug with the 16-80 so replaced with a perfect fit JJC HG-XT50 handgrip. Took the new combo on a short trip to the UK last month and satisfied with the results and portability. I must ‘fess though still not into filmsims! Thanks for the delightful prez.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Hope it works for you. The grip itself isn’t quite as wide as camera’s grip thereby providing a little more room for one’s fingers.
Nice’review’! I bought mine a couple of months ago, with the 16-50. Took it to Madrid, loved it! Unobtrusive, small, fast. I agree: the Smallrig grip is not nice: my fingers get squeezed, even to the point it hurts. I sold my X100V last year due to the lack of flexibility with lenses. I found the joy of taking pictures again with this camera! Oscar from The Netherlands
Hi Kirk. A good review, most enjoyable and lovely images. I have an X-T5 plus the XF 18-30, XF 70-300 and the Tamron 17-70 f2.8. So many reviewers don't mention the Tamron. It has similar dimensions to the XF 70-300 and the same filter size. Also the optical quality exceeds the 16-80 throughout the range. In terms of weight and size the Tamron would make a good match to the X-T50. So with that and the 70-300 one would have an amazing light weight kit, for travel or just everyday photography.
Hey Kirk, thanks for the video. I checked out the XT50 at a local camera store and really loved it. I have an XT5 and a Nikon Z8. I use the nikon for landscape, travel and sports and the Fujifilm XT5 for travel and street. I'm considering selling the XT5 and getting the xt50 and the new 16-50mm. I have the 27 mm f 2.8 so to me that's a nice alternative to the XT100vi, but I digress. My biggest reservations are the battery, weather sealing and screen dose not flip vertical. I find the last the biggest concern because I find myself using that vertical flip a lot when shooting street. Then again I don't shoot pure street( mostly travel) all that much. What do you think?
Trying to decide between the x-t50 and the T5. Will be a travel camera. Leaning toward t50, but obsessing about the lack of weather sealing. How much protection does the weather sealing provide and is the t50 safe in a little mist or drizzle?
Very good review, however for me the XS20 is the perfect travel camera, better battery life, and bigger grip. On a recent trip to Minorca I took the Sigma 18-50, and the Fuji 70-300 and took some stunning photos.
i found the same issue with the small rig grip, so I now use the small rig half leather case which has a grip extension. I also find the signa 18-50mm is smaller, lighter, and perfect with the xt50. So i travel with 18-50mm (sigma), 70-300mm, and either my 23mm f2 or sigma 30mm f1.4. ... fits in a 10l sling perfectly.
I thought about the half leathr case but for me it would just be in the way. The 18-50 sounds like a good choice but I still have the 18-55 or maybe the 16-50 too many options, lol
I tried the 16-80 f4 on my XT50 with the small rig grip and the space between the inside part of the grip and lens is tight, with the 14mm prime their was no problem, it is a problem with smaller camera bodies, I purchased a black half case for the camera from small rig and it actually works better than the grip, the benefits of the grip is the bottom plate is designed for tripod mounting and it works well ,I also have a Peak Designed camera strap and it does help when shooting with larger glass. So i will only use the grip for tripod use ,the rest of the time it will be in the half case, gives me more grip and protection with the Peak Designed leash camera strap.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography the two things that the half case does, is the texture makes the camera easier to hold and the bottom of the case has a metal plate similar to that on the camera, this makes the camera sit a little taller and gives my pinkie a place to sit, without the case my pinkie has no home.
I bought the X-T50 back in July along with the new 16-50 lens (because I sold my 18-55 a few years ago, not a smart move!). I just returned from a 3600 mile road trip. I packed the X-T50 in a small camera bag along with the 70-300, 14 2.8 and the 60 macro. I also had a large bag with my X-T4 and more larger lenses including the 16-80. I agree with everything you said. I, too, purchased a SmallRig grip that is totally useless. When using the 16-80, it just doesn't feel right or handle well. So - I ended up shooting almost all my photos with the X-T50 and the 16-50. A great travel combination. My photo kit will be much smaller on my next trip!
Great video! Thanks for showing how big lenses work (or don’t work) with the X-T50’s small camera body. I also liked hearing about your settings and how you’re using the film simulation dial. When I first heard about this camera and its dedicated film simulation dial, I thought it was an unnecessary gimmick. But I guess I can see some benefits. Like you, I have an X-T5, which is my main camera. But I could see the X-T50 being a nice backup camera that I use for travel. Although I’m still holding out to see if Fuji releases an xPro4, which I might prefer over this. From the last Fuji xSummit, it sounds like a couple a new cameras will be announced in 2025. Fingers crossed.
Well done. You really get around. Fuifilm hasn't enticed me to add to my Xt-3 or Xe-3 yet. Still love those, but I have been seduced back to the Nikon side with new cameras and vintage lenses.
I had a positive experience traveling to Europe with the 27mm XF2.8 and the 16-50mmXF f/2.8-4.8. When with the 27, carried the camera in a Domke Belt Pouch. I added the 70-300 for a new trip to South America; but a bit worried about the lack of weather sealing. Hopefully I'll be ok.
@@KirkWilliamsonphotography Indeed, thanks for your reply !!! Do you think it will do fine in 20,000 feet above sea level with freezing temps ? Planning on climbing a mountain that high. 😬
I have the silver X-T50 with only XF23mm F2 and TTartisan 56mm 1.8 now and have small rig grip installed and it works fine. I'm planning to get the new Fujifilm XF16-55 mark ii lens once its available but looking at your video, the smallrig grip is going to be useless with this new lens. Do you think the Smallrig camera hand strap will works on this camera?
The grip works fine with the 23 f2 not sure about the 56. I have the Viltrox 56 f1.7 and it’s tight with the grip. The new 16-55 will not be a good match with the grip. Not sure about the wrist strap. The small rig half case works fine.
I use the Smallrig grip in my X-T50 and it’s okey, maybe my hands are smaller than yours, the 16-80 it is “big” but moving fingers you can get a confortable position, but I prefer the 10-24 there or small lenses like 35 f1.4 or TTArtisan 17f1.4 or the 14f2.8, for Street, Studio or landscape it is perfect, well the 15-45 it is nice because it is small and light getting great results except flare in front the sun directly in some street scenes. I tested the animal tracking with horses and it is not so good, for quite subjects it is fine. I am going to use my X-H1 for sports or to use big lenses.
How was the battery life with that older battery and the x-t50? I usually took 3 batteries on outings with x-t20 or x-t3, didn't think it was a big deal swapping. Then I got the x-t5 and wow, how much I appreciate that battery!!! I have a spare in my vehicle but have never had to change batteries on an outing. I'm not sure I want another fuji without the new battery.
I love mine, if it had weather sealing that would make it perfect. I don't use the simulation dial so that's a waste of a dial for me but I can live with that.
Love the vertical waterfall. I would get this as an everyday carry, but I dont shoot professionally anymore, it’s become more of a hobby, it’s hard to justify spending the money.
My opinion is that smaller XT bodies like the 30 and 50 are not meant by be claw grip like you did in the video. Your middle finger lay flat on the body and your index finger on the shutter release, then the body is pinched by your thumb and the middle finger.

I’ve seen and played with the 16-50 it’s a great little lens great for what you want to do.

I tend to cover the camera up even if it is weather sealed. So I would not obsess with it.

I felt the same way about the dial until I actually used it. Of course you can still set the camera up to change the film sims with the front dial.

The 70-300 is weather sealed at the flange and elsewhere. The camera will hold up fine as long as it’s not a drenching rain.

Could you do a review of handling of the xt50 with the xf70 300 and whether thats a good combination for weight and usage etc
From my experience so far it's not real bad at all. the 70-300 is not that heavy and with your hand under the lens never on top it will balance out.
