  • Haynes has been making repair manuals for decades, but in late 2020, the repair manual production has come to an end. This isn't the end of the Haynes company, though! You will see more of Haynes as they adapt to the changing economy with a focus on digital goods.

"New Haynes Manuals Will No Longer Be In Print" by Mercedes Streeter on Jalopnik: jalopnik.com/n...

The Haynes Owner's Workshop Manuals (commonly known as Haynes Manuals) are a series of practical manuals from the British publisher Haynes Publishing Group. The series primarily focuses upon the maintenance and repair of automotive vehicles, covering a wide range of makes and models (300 models of car and 130 models of motorcycle); the manuals are aimed mainly at DIY enthusiasts rather than professional garage mechanics, as they lack the depth of coverage on particular vehicles or problems.
The Haynes manuals are named after John Harold Haynes (1938-2019). In 1956, when he was at school, he wrote and published a book on building a 'special' based on the Austin 7, and wrote two further books while performing national service in the Royal Air Force. J. H. Haynes & Co. Limited was founded on 18 May 1960 and the first manual actually entitled "Haynes Owners Workshop Manual", for the Austin-Healey Sprite, was published in 1965. Haynes was made an Officer of Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honors List 1995 for services to publishing. He died on 8 February 2019, aged 80.

Every time I buy a car, I buy a manual to go with it. Been doing that since the mid '90s. I find it easier to look at and trace wiring diagrams on paper instead of on a screen. Videos and color pictures are helpful and give an advantage over the books, especially since most manuals have black and white photos. Some of the limitations you did not mention with using an electronic device while working on a car is the struggle to keep it clean while working with grease, oils, fuel, etc. Most devices are touch screen, but they don't respond when you're wearing a glove so you can find yourself constantly removing your glove to swipe the screen. Also, if you are working outside on a sunny day, the screen can be hard to see in bright sunlight depending on the device. I'm old enough to have been serving when the US Air Force went from paper book technical manuals for aircraft mechanics to digital manuals loaded on iPads. The iPads will shut down if they get too hot in the summer or too cold in the winter.

Well I don't have any of those problems because I find the part I am working on today on my PC and print out what I need, and I can blow it up bigger before I print it if I can't see something clear. I could not work of a phone or a laptop but this way you have the best of both worlds, and the beauty of digital is if you need a manual now today you don't have to weight for it to arrive in the mail or go looking for the one you want. I think digital is great and you just need a cheap printer and you can get dirt all over it and write all over it and then just throw it away when you are done.

I'm nearly 40 and as a kid i used to just look thru Haynes manuals, and they taught me alot before i even touched a car, down side is in the past they could strip and rebuild a car to make a manual, but they would have to make a second manual today to explain how to code and program certain components and thats where it just beyond hard work

Oh for sure. I have a 1986 Pontiac 6000 shop manual (not the Haynes) and even back then the electrical section was its own supplemental booklet not included in the actual manual. If they kept going that route to this day, I'm sure the electrical section would be a bigger book than the mechanical one.
I want to learn how to program functionality into automotive computers (not just tune for power) but both the lessons and tools are pretty far out of reach on modern vehicles.

@@CarsSimplified what brands do you have access to such as your own car?
I guess you mean changing functions such as lighting, locking, immo, "hidden features" please correct if i'm wrong

I've changed some basic stuff like that on my GTO, but I want to program on a code level, maybe add circuits to unused connector pins to control features I add, etc. I can't recall any cool/interesting examples at the moment, but I very often think "I wish I could use this thing in this way, but I would have to have information from the computer to make sure the conditions were right to activate it" or something similar to that. Adding active aero that activates at certain speeds is a good example, actually.
I'm not sure what you mean by what brands I have access to, but at any time I can work on the GTO (GM), the Montego (Ford), and the Subaru Crosstrek. I have friends and family that let me work on their stuff when I'm in town; Ford, VW, Toyota, and Hyundai, to name a few.

@@CarsSimplified ok i wont promote cloned cables thats your choice if you went that route (just gotta say that in case of yt police lol) for vw group cars if you get a basic cable off ebay not the elm327 but get a kkl 409.1 as there cheap and you can use the freeware version of ross tech's vcds and that lets you in to alot,
The full version and official cable are a few hundred as you know and that gets you deeper, then for the security side you'd need summit like abrites and thats BIG money, plus ross tech have a amazing website with alot of useful bits on,
There is a youtube channel that if you have not already heard of it called "High Performance Academy" i feel some of the videos on that channel will help you with what you want, can bus is the boy as all the information and commands lay in the network for the things you want like engagement at certain speed if temp right etc, then its time to hit a raspberry pi to make your own ecm to interact and be a litrallal hacker to the cars data bus,
Also there is a Subaru program that works with the kkl cable aswell,
I got 3 laptops for different brands of vehicle for different decades (ford vw Vauxhall/opel/gm) plus all my databases and epc's, and no matter what the collection will never stop growing while i'm breathing

I've heard of HP Academy and have watched some of their videos. Do they do those disappearing live streams?
I'll definitely look into these things, but the one VW I have access to is my brother's Rabbit and he probably doesn't want me tampering with the ECU and usually doesn't want mods.

I guess the change is motivated by money, but hard copy books are often better for the backyard mechanic. The pro shops have a fully equipped garage and an office with a computer to access online content. Guys like me just have an iPhone in my pocket. Accessing an online manual with greasy hands or gloves on, is just not user-friendly. Flipping pages in a book with gloves on or dirty hands is easier.
Back in the 90’s when I started using these manuals, this was all we had. There was no UA-cam or online content. My friends and I got a lot of repairs done, using these books.

I've had their manuals for several vehicles over a few decades. They were fine, not great. They often make things look easier (especially easier to access) than they really are, and they tend to have photos of the obvious steps, not the complicated stuff. However, I recently bought a Haynes manual for a late-model vehicle and the manual is practically useless. Several things I've looked for simply aren't in the book, or the directions are too vague or flippant. Worse, it often has incorrect information (e.g., bolt sizes), which makes me question their torque specs. Based on this most recent purchase, I wouldn't buy another of their books again, especially since you can't look in them first (due to the plastic wrapping).

I am definitely a basic ass bitch, but I grew up with these manuals in the house and I still purchase one whenever I get a vehicle. I'm glad they are still doing online manuals, they are actually externally helpful.

  • @ryansullivan5782

I have purchased a manual for each vehicle I have owned. It provides so much info that the vehicle (wannabe) "manual" usually doesn't provide, like basic maintenance/torque specs, maintenance schedule in much better detail, maintenance procedures, ect. I am sure I am preaching to the choir. As a DIY homeowner/father/husband who has had zero mechanic training, these books make basic maintenance/repair possible. It is so nice to look up a few specs and info before I go do a basic maintenance.
I've been very helped by UA-cam videos in many aspects of life, that I agree with the opinion of this video that it makes sense to do UA-cam videos.
I'm very disappointed in Haynes decision to ONLY do UA-cam videos, and deeply disagree with it.

I would prefer dealer level workshop manuals. Even if I have to pay much more money for it and not even in english or my native language. I also have obtained the Electronic Parts Catalog so I know which OEM number an aftermarket part should have to determine compatibility.

Definitely; I used to try to get Haynes manuals for every car I owned, but now that I deal with newer and/or more obscure vehicles, it has been hard to find them.
The GTO forums and UA-cam are pretty much holding up the GTO DIY repair community at this point. The Crosstrek is new but starting to get some aftermarket support now.

I think they are ditching their USP. I always bought a book to go with my new car. This time around I'm looking at their online "manual" and reading "generic" videos etc and have decided this car can do without the Hanyes online manual as I fear it will just be less specific information than I can find elsewhere. I do like having a book just for my car and a library of books on my shelf dating back over the cars I have owned but Haynes is no longer that guy.
