I started some zenith zoysia plugs in an area where I had tons of tall weeds that would grow up about 7 years ago and it took care of it. Now my goal is to have my whole yard with it. I love it!! I've never been one to care about grass but now I'm fertilizing it and weeding it lol. Like you said, it doesn't take much maintenance at all to be beautiful!! I am doing 6 ft sections at a time, yeah it's slow but good things are worth waiting for 😊
Zoysia is incredible but it takes years to get established. There are some cultural practices you can use to encourage it but like you said, it goes at its own pace. I plugged 6500 plugs in my front yard and didn't really get noticeable growth until the second growing season. I would say one of the pros is dormant color- much better than bermuda, more golden like wheat straw where bermuda looks a bit dingy and gray. It is also insanely thick, which you mentioned, it can support a lot of weight without leaving marks- but it also can thatch up pretty badly and your spring scalp cut there will be tons of litter to take away. Still wouldn't trade it for any stand of fescue!
Amen on the thickness. Wife said it looks like carpet, shag if you don't cut fast enough. That scares me during fungus seasons, so I treat the lawn with DThatch / Mollasses monthly before a watering to keep the little MOs eating away at that thatch layer. I'm cutting now at 1-1/2", which is as low as my mower will go. Now since it's cooling back into the low 90s, I'm going back down to 1" with the reel. That'll help get air down there. Good luck on your continued fill in. Year three I think's the charm. That's when you start sitting outside watching it grow because you know every mow helps stimulate it's growth 🙂
There is a trick for folks that are using plugs. Once your plugs spread/thicken you can spray MSMA and it kills other types of grasses like Centipede and St Augustine. I realize MSMA is restricted to golf course use mainly but if a friend gives you a couple ounces you won’t be bothering anyone. Most redneck southern towns don’t have anyone to send to check you. You should see some of the deck construction out there that never gets checked 😄
I'm a fescue guy in the transition zone but i love your work brother. Saw a few, strange weeds in my lawn the other day and thought "J. Creel would know exactly what these are on sight." Also appreciate the occasions where you operate machinery for the first time, that's good stuff too. God bless you man!
I recently bulldozer an acre and a half. I had it leveled out nicely. In doing so it left the dirt very very lose. So i spread out zoysia seed and wheat straw to help prevent any wash out. It has only grown in a shaded very wet area. Should i have aerated the land first? Im in north georgia dalton/chatsworth area we get PLENTY of rain here.
Never pictured myself turning into a lawn nerd, but here I am!! 🙂 Oh yeah on the machinery. Went Electric a couple of years ago and didn't look back! Makes you want to get out and cut grass! The backpack sprayer just added icing on the cake. Just started using a manual reel and already looking at the in between SunJoe now. There's worse ways to spend your money!! LOVE THE MOW!!
My wife and I moved into our home about 2 years ago. Its front yard was half grass, half everything else. We had the yard analyzed, to find that the "good" side is Zoysia. So, now I'm on a journey to get the entire yard Zoysia. I put down 2 pounds of Zenith Zoysia seed about a week ago. I'm hoping for good results. I'm in northern Mississippi. The rain helps a lot. From what I've learned, I should see germination in another 2 weeks or so.
Here's a follow-up. For what you would pay for the seed AND the water bill, you may as well call for sod. Yep - unless you have some in-ground watering system on a timer - and the money to pay for all the water this seed needs, don't waste your money - or time - on Zoysia seed. To clarify - I got ZERO grass from about $200 worth of Zenith seed. ZERO.
I have 2 acres of zenith from 12 lb of seed. 1 lot spread on bare ground. 1 lot spread with grain drill less than 1/2 inch deep. If in contact with soil it will eventually come up. Sooner or later ground will stay damp for 14 days. Slow slow slow. Can remember searching for tiny shoots of grass. About 3rd year it was beautiful 😍. Not as fancy as sod. But no thatch Extremely drought tolerant. 6 weeks no rain will look totally dead. Finally rain an inch it's back to normal in 2 days. I am one person who preferred Zenith or common zoysia always will it's tough.
I also put out $200 of Zenith Zoysia seed about a month ago and haven’t seen a single blade pop up after heavy rains. I also put some zenith sod out that’s doing great though.
I agree I loved my Zeon Zoysia yard and chocked the weeds out but I will say my new TifTuf lawn is awesome. Stayed green until Christmas and repairs itself super fast.
Year 5 after plugging zoysia, thought it was all dead it was just working underground. Now it's really moving. Tip 1 mow low Tip 2 plant growth regulator.
Just found your channel and Love it!! I'll bet that you have a degree from Auburn! Excellent school for your line of work! I like the fact that you love zoysia, Me too. Meyer that is! But I inherited a centipede lawn. So, it's a work in progress trying to re-establish some problem areas. Thanks for your knowledge bud, and Roll Tide! lol
Thanks for this . I’ve tried St Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia and the Zoysia grows well (3hrs of sun and heavy traffic) where the others won’t. You are right it is so slow to spread.
Zenith Zoysia seed is available, and will take under good conditions. It's not cheap, but far less than sod, as you know. Working on seeding my lawn now.
If you have a 6' bare spot in Zoysia, get a plugging tool. I have one that takes plugs about 2-3" across in a perfect circle and at either 2, 4 or 6 inch depths. I've had a few bare spots due to my issues, not the Zoysia. What I do is take plugs from the thickest part of the lawn and put in the bare spots, and take the soil from the bare spots and put it back in the thick spots to refill the voids. A little watering for a few weeks and the plug takes and I could have that 6' spot filled in with Zenith Zoysia in 6-8 weeks in the prime growing weather, and that is up here in Central Virginia. If you do not plug though, it would take a while to spread and take over. Without plugging, the next best bet would be to put down some kind of Zoysia seed (Zenith, Zeon, Emerald, etc.) and fertilize and water for a month or so, which would take watering at least 4X a day in hot weather. I know you know this...just if others are reading. I'm not sure if it is Zenith or all Zoysia, but Super Sod says you can put down 2-3 pounds of Nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft., but I personally aim closer to the 2 pound mark, and maybe a little heavier in spots I'm trying to fill in currently. I also mow a little higher than the recommended height (usually about 2 inches), and I keep my blades very sharp. I use a Honda HRN 216 twin blade mower and it mulches the clippings very well. Instead of using a grinding wheel, I use a sandpaper type flat grinding wheel which removes less metal overall, but still sharpens as quickly as my normal grinding wheel, but it helps the blades last longer.
I found a I could get my Zeon Zoysia to spread by putting 3 lbs of 10 10 10 on it every week and watering it every day. Didn’t spread like Bermuda but made really good progress.
It took me a while to run into you but better late than never. You are only the second person on the UA-cam to state growing a zoysia lawn takes years, not a season. The other guy was in San Antonio, Tx. I’m in Austin. Anyway i put in Zeon Zoysia two seasons ago. I chose it because I wanted a more carpet like look and feel, but main reason was it’s shade tolerance. My lawn is covered by large live oaks that gives up 4-5 hours of filtered light a day. I was told my lawn professionals (and rudely), that I’d never get any grass to grow in those spots. I did it anyway and I did it myself. First season, I was starting to believe them. The lawn actually thinned in those areas. However after getting a soil test and following a regiment of most organic soil feeding, things started changing. Season two, the areas are filling in and thickening. I’m headed into season3 and now strangers are stopping an asking what type grass it is. Compliments are the norm. Doesn’t hurt that I mow low and often to promote better side growth. I still have spots where I can see soil, but I’m excited about how this lawn will look after season 3. I would have nothing different than my Zeon Zoysia! It has taught me patience pays off and learned to choose lawn care companies carefully. Happy to add you to my Zoysia lawn “Braintrust” 😀😉

I have struggled with this lawn for 10 years with nothing much growing in the shade and the grass in the back yard getting burned. I am on a budget and would like the best solution possible. Hey Lawn Care Life, What is a good grass seed to mix with my existing St. Aug grass I want to fill it out but also want it to blend well. I live in South Florida. Am not a fan of Bermuda grass. I like tall Fescue which I think would blend well. But Tall Fescue doesn't do well here from what I have read. Any thoughts? please help
Is it coarse? I can't tell by looking at photos. Sometimes it looks thin and soft. Other times I see thick, rough blades. I'm desperately looking for a Florida grass that's most similar to grass in the midwest. Soft, thin blades and dense.
Do they use zoysia on baseball fields? My grandfather had zoysia in the yard and it was so soft and thick perfect for diving , sliding .. he didn’t like us tearing up his yard tho.. I kno they use Bermuda,& Bluegrass,
What type of zoysia grass would you recommend for Cincinnati Ohio, I've purchased plugs (Zenith?) from Amazon, but seem to be really slow at spreading...
Is there a selective herbicide which can be applied to Carpet Juniper to eliminate the Zoysia which has migrated from my lawn to the Juniper and will not harm the Juniper? I have stopped the migration and now I would like to eliminate the Zoysia in the Juniper. 0:58
My yard has a mixture of all kinds of grass. There is St. Augustine and then a very fine blade grass that grows a lot lite St. Augustine. My problem is Dallisgrass. How in the world can I get rid of it? My hands are so sore from pulling it after tons of watering.
Good work on ur info and videos. Need some recommendations. What would u suggest for grass seeding in south texas? Everyone does bermuda not zoysia down here (as for seeds) others do st augie and bermuda sod. Bermuda is a challenge in shade. So what do u recommend? Thnx

Looking to install a new large lawn for new construction in Birmingham, AL area. Looking for that sweet spot between drought tolerance, weed control, nice green color, and somewhat cost. (This will be our home for many years) Almost all of the lawn is full sun for 6-8 hours. Found Innovation Zoysia but can't find much about it. Anyone used it with any luck or any other options out there? Love to hear some thoughts!
My issue I'm in Memphis, TN and I installed Zoysia sod in the back of my oak tree in between the house and tree last year and now I'm seeing a lot of bald spots. What can I do for that? I also had a lot of thatch.
I am in Hawaii and my lawn is terrible. I want to kill the grass and plant zoysia. Whats the purpose of a soil test if you are just going to treat your soil to what you want? Also, I have a lot of smaller rocks in the soil. Whats the best way to filter those rocks out and what do you put in there to refill the lawn, would you just put topsoil on there? Also, could you seed in between the plugs to keep weeds from competing in the dead space between the plugs?
Do you know if Zoysia grows well in central California (zone 9)? Ive never seen it for sale anywhere local. Bermuda does really well here. Right now half of my lawn is Bermuda and half, in the shady areas, is turf type tall fescue. Im wondering if I could replace the fescue with Zoysia?
It does, but you'll need an irrigation system. Here in Sacramento, we get no rain for a good 9 months. I had good success with Zenith Zoysia seed, but I do have to water it more than the Bermuda. As others have noted, getting it established is tough. You need to water for at least a minute at least every couple of hours, else it will dry out and die.
@@tonisama Thanks. I actually got some established in a shady area on my lawn where Bermuda grass wont grow. Its blending in nice now with the Bermuda and I no longer have bare spots in the shade 😁
I have new zoysia. I'm on month 3 and fighting nutsedge weeds everywhere. What do you suggest? I spray the weeds constantly but new ones keep popping up. I spent 2k on this grass.
Certainty is typically the product I use. It is very difficult to kill though. Not sure where you live but cooler weather will make the nutsedge go away soon for many of us. I imagine you watered it a lot being new sod. Watering less frequently next year may also help
@@lawncarelife Yes they told me to water 3 times a day for a week. I"m in GA and its 95 degrees here in August. Might get cooler in October. Lol. I'm spraying each one but they turn yellow and then die but its taking awhile and new ones keep popping up.

I have zoysia grass and I can’t stand it….this is because I live in NJ so my grass is only green MAYBE 3 months of the year. This is definitely not my grass of choice, but it came with my house when I bought it. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get rid of this grass.
@tc6984 onions are slow to die. You can spray with them with metsulfuron or Blindside. I think it is fine to spray that lawn with almost any post-emergent to kill the weeds. I like change up but there are plenty of other options. I think the comment about it being too late refers to the idea that a lot of warm-season weeds have already germinated so in some sense it is already too late for your pre-emergent
Another negative. I can’t make new beds bc edging it is impossible. I bought a edging cuttter machine so hoping that works. I know I only weight 120lb but even when I jump on shovel nothing happens. I think the grass laughs at me.

I live in San Antonio TX. My front lawn has a lot of shade and my back yard has more sun. What type of grass seed should I buy? I have struggled with this lawn for 10 years with nothing much growing in the shade and the grass in the back yard getting burned. I am on a budget and would like the best solution possible. Thank you.
I like this video, way more pros than cons lol
All Zoysia is slow to spread. If you need to cover a large space you’ll have to buy it buy the pallet
or purchase some seed.
what type of fertilizer would you use to make the Zoysia grass greener? Thank you.
I just booked a customer yesterday with Z.G.
That's great
Is there a selective herbicide which can be applied to Carpet Juniper to eliminate the Zoysia which has migrated from my lawn to the Juniper and will not harm the Juniper? I have stopped the migration and now I would like to eliminate the Zoysia in the Juniper. 0:58
What type of grass do you recommend for a backyard putting green that is lightening fast like the ones the pros play?
My zoysia is being cut at 3” and looking pretty good. I’m scared to cut her down to 1.5”-2”.
Thank you!!
Where can I find and buy zoysia grass seed.
Which is better to grow in sandy soil (with plenty of sunlight) in Florida, Zoysia or Bermuda?
My yard has a mixture of all kinds of grass. There is St. Augustine and then a very fine blade grass that grows a lot lite St. Augustine. My problem is Dallisgrass. How in the world can I get rid of it? My hands are so sore from pulling it after tons of watering.
Good work on ur info and videos. Need some recommendations. What would u suggest for grass seeding in south texas? Everyone does bermuda not zoysia down here (as for seeds) others do st augie and bermuda sod. Bermuda is a challenge in shade. So what do u recommend? Thnx
What's the best grass seed to put down. I live in Connecticut USA and I'm trying to find the best grass seed to put down. Plus what's good seed and better seed when I overseed
What's your thought on zoysia grass seed?
My issue I'm in Memphis, TN and I installed Zoysia sod in the back of my oak tree in between the house and tree last year and now I'm seeing a lot of bald spots. What can I do for that? I also had a lot of thatch.
Where I can get grass seeds for Emerald Zoysia?
Wild Bermuda has taken over fescue lawn. If I roundup it x 2 applications and then sod with zoysia, will the Wild Brmuda come back?
if I put Zoysia plugs in my centipede, will it overtake it?
Did you ever found out? I'm asking the same question
Did you ever found out? I'm asking the same question. I want to get rid of my centipede lawn so bad
How high and how low can I mow Chisholm zoysia? How often does it need to be de-thatched?
Hey Jason, can you consider a video about trying to maintain a tall turf fescue grass lawn in an area such as yours in Birmingham. AL?
Good suggestion but I'm not sure I am qualified. There is very little TTTF in my area
@@lawncarelife Totally understand. My yard is trying to tell me the same thing! Thanks for all your hard work.
@Jeffrey Palmer You must keep the seed and young sprouts moist at all times.
Zoysia is like having a pretty girlfriend. You gotta do what you gotta do if you want it to stick around.
Please give me some types of companies that carry Zoysia grass seed that I can order from
How does zoisia work in the north east?
Accidentally watered my zoysia grass this morning at 730am. By 11 am it looked burt what do you suggest its 550pm here in Mo.
Burnt
@@johngibson3914 next year I would water it once a week for 30 minutes
what grass would work for northern Nevada?
Where can I purchase canada grass nobody here in philadelphia pa knows what it is or it isn't available here I have major issues with weeds bugs and everything you can think of including traffic the park a creek system wildlife crazy neighbors the list goes on my rock garden is suffering and I have a postage stamp of a backyard but it needs HELP and there's a catwalk between the houses and the weeds have chocked it out completely and the neighbors are oblivious to the problem but I have it cleaned out regularly for safety issues as well as weed prevention and for kicks and giggles I have no water spigot for a hose have you ever heard anything this crazy please help me thank you
What’s best weed killer for myer zoysia
I have zoysia grass and I can’t stand it….this is because I live in NJ so my grass is only green MAYBE 3 months of the year. This is definitely not my grass of choice, but it came with my house when I bought it. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get rid of this grass.
Several rounds of Tenacity. Overseed in fall with fescue or kentucky bluegrass.
Hey what product can I use for pest and weeds on zoysia? Tribute total is too expensive
Celsius
here i am close to mid april and have terrible weed in zoysia sod (2 years old) told its to late to put anything on it just waisting money. Any ideas
I would say it depends on the weed
@@lawncarelife so many different kinds including onions.
lets put it this way would i be waisting money if i did anything right now
BTW its zeon zoysia I am in CLT
@tc6984 onions are slow to die. You can spray with them with metsulfuron or Blindside. I think it is fine to spray that lawn with almost any post-emergent to kill the weeds. I like change up but there are plenty of other options. I think the comment about it being too late refers to the idea that a lot of warm-season weeds have already germinated so in some sense it is already too late for your pre-emergent
Al the lawns here in Tuscaloosa with zoysia look to be in dire need of dethatching
I just installed zoysia meyer in November of last year, it grew with so much poana.
What could I put to prevent the poana from spreading?
Poa will die when it gets hot. Put a pre-emergent out next fall before the cool weather comes
I live in an area where we get in the high 120s for two/three months. Would Zoysia survive?
I don't know the answer to that one. Where do you live where it gets that hot?
@@lawncarelife Middle East.. there’s plenty of golf courses here so something does survive.. I will try to inquire with them thank you 🙏🏼
any idea how to get centipede grass out of a mainly bermuda lawn?
Msma
Another negative. I can’t make new beds bc edging it is impossible. I bought a edging cuttter machine so hoping that works. I know I only weight 120lb but even when I jump on shovel nothing happens. I think the grass laughs at me.
Is that around Lake Martin?
Logan martin
3:20 .... Click on the time stamp and tell me this guy isn't the Tom Brady of Lawn Care.
Pros: Looks
Cons: Bermuda
You ain’t kidding that zoysia does not spread!! I don’t even know how they grow it
I have that SAME STUPID WEED !!! Can't get rid of it, in my yard, garden, flower beds, EVERY WHERE ! I have ZERO grass almost and a pretty green weed lawn.
Is 200 a pallet good price for zoysia that what I was quoted yesterday .
Yes
Not to be that guy but I have grown zoysia in a closet
😂
Zoysia grass grown in New England is brown for at least 8 months of the year. Not attractive, as it looks dead.
I would not recommend zoysia in New England. It looks great here in Alabama
@@lawncarelife It's a stubborn strain, and is extremely difficult to remove. From personal experience.
