I had a 25 year old Deutz diesel engine on my Angling Boat and in the winter it was sometimes hard to start. I often took the Air Filter off and held a blazing rag whilst the starter motor turned the Engine over. It never failed to work and out to Sea I went. Happy Days.

Prior to batteries, glow plugs, induction heaters.........this was the original pre heat setup to make diesel fuel hot enough to fire during the compression cycle. Any old tractor or truck prior to 1920' you would start a fire under the oil pan to heat the oil and "warm" the block prior to starting.
This is a tube well in Rural Area of my country Pakistan, Province of Punjab. I belong to a similar village area of Pakistan. As you can see, our people are very hard working. We Pakistani People are one of the hardest working people, we do not give up, till we achieve the objective. It takes a lot of patience to do the manual hard work in the fields. Fruit of patience is always sweet. Keep up the good work, my Pakistani brothers. Also, Pakistan has the World's largest Canal irrigation network. They are also modernizing their agricultural machinery fast. Now a lot of Solar Powered Water Tube Wells, along with Drip and sprinkler irrigation system are replacing these old Diesel powered tube wells.

The fact that some genius has removed the air filter and it doesn't look like it has had an oil change since it left the factory in 1964 may have something to do with the hard starting of this poor diesel engine.

Love the idea of the glow plug. ...... Warm the diesel up with a fire to help it combust. Still, felt sorry for him having to swing that flywheel so many times while the other dude just closes the exhaust valve lol
I do something similar, though more modern, on cold mornings with my generator. A propane blowtorch 😂 One pf these days I will have to fix the glow plugs ...
been watching a few of these old diesel videos. it’s terrifying to watch them put the belt on. I wince and half look away every time even though i’m sure they are very experienced in doing it
These people are happy and most likely happier than you and I.No mortgage to worry about and shitty traffic jams, just plain living and some hard work. Wouldn’t like going to their dentist though.

Its very easy start if u just put fire at the exhaust pipe not in the intake... After i overhaul this kind of engine i always do this technique for easy starting...

Some Perkins would spray diesel into the intake manifold and light it up for the same effect. Beats having a glow plug IMO.

You have the right idea with the fire. I suggest placing the torch under the air intake manifold and get it hot. Then turn the crank.
