i’ve tried it before and it was very difficult to skate on, i kept on falling while trying to do simple footwork and i eventually gave up because i didn’t want to dull my skates. I personally wouldn’t recommend skating on it but the concept is pretty cool

I wouldn't get as excited about it before trying it out first.
I was - and I tried - and I cannot tell you how disappointed I was!
It is VERY hard to glide on this ice. The friction is such that it takes enormous force to glide. I assure you that not many of us will be able to do it.
I tried it in our science museum once (when they got it installed right before Christmas - and had a cute program for kids about properties of water).
I came so excited, I put my skates on, walked out on the ice - I couldn't skate! I was trying to push - I couldn't go beyond 1-2 inches - and I would stop HARD. Like I was trying to be going on a dirt road in my skates.
When the skating guard saw the astonished look on my face, he said : "yeah.. it is quite hard to skate on, ha? It's not a real ice by any means! I am sorry". I tried to walk around some more - and pushed, and pushed - I couldn't skate. I walked off.
Some kids on very dull rental skates were trying around - I could tell they struggled too.
My skating coach told me she had skated on synthetic ice when she worked with "circus on ice" at some tours - and it was extremely hard to do! You have to push VERY hard, she said - or you would stop on the spot.
Another thing that comes out of the problem of high friction - is that your blades heat up very quickly, they get hot momentarily, and they get very dull too. So you will have to sharpen them after every small session of skating on synthetic ice.
With all that said - synthetic ice is not for everybody.
It is obvious that some people can skate on it, and skate quite well - as shown on all their ads - mostly highly professional skaters- such as Michelle, or my Coach.
But if you are seriously thinking of getting some panels installed in your basement or your backyard - think twice. AND - I beg you - try them out first for yourself - to see if you will be physically able to do it.
I could not. I am very sad about it till this day!

Spray the surface with silicone lubricant, it helps with the glide tremendously!

    • @svetlanachembrovich7133
      @svetlanachembrovich7133 3 роки тому +11

@@tonyn7168 I have nothing to spray, ha-ha! I doubt they would allow me to walk in and start spraying around with the silicone spray if I were to come to children's' museum next time - just to see if it really helps. That's a joke. Speaking more seriously - as much as I want it (I leave 112 miles away from ice rink, this is how far I have to drive every Saturday and Sunday) - I wouldn't dare to risk the expense for questionable benefit of silicone spray. I admire the advances in technology. I really do. But it's not there yet. Not for everyone to use.

An hour of skating on synthetic ice is considered the standard, from what I've read, before you need another sharpening. That's assuming you're starting with sharp blades though. I didn't even skate for an hour before I got sick of it, so I can't say from personal experience.

Hmm.... Well, I know nothing about figure skating. But judging by the comments from videos for similar synthetic ices, it’s sounding like these products are more for hockey players? So I have to wonder if a separate synthetic ice product has to be made specifically for figure skaters. Something that will replicate what it’s like to skate on actual ice, but won’t ruin the blades. Or coming in at a close second: Is there some kind of modification that can be applied to skates so they won’t get ruined by the fake ice?

Given the limitation on indoor space and the board's slightly greater friction than real ice (that I hear), what moves or techniques do you suggest that are more suitable for it?Thanks!

Hi michelle! I have a few questions for you if you don't mind. I started skating on off-ice skates this summer. The boot is a GRAF 500 and there are rollers instead of blades.
    1. I am able to get a pair of *used* Edea Ice Fly skates with the John Wilson coronation Ace blades. Is it okay to buy those as a beginner? The Edea website says the support is 90 (super strong) will this be tougher to skate on as a beginner since every little mistake is felt?
    2. Or is it better to buy a *new* pair of Edea Wave's? (stiffness 40 and fits my level)
    My level:
I am able to do forward and backwards crossovers and almost all edges are pretty solid to hold except for my left inside edge. The only jump I've mastered is the Waltz jump and I am working on my split jump currently. I have a gymnastics background and still do it with a lot of joy. I am also pretty content with my spiral. Spins are pretty much out of the equation, I practice the 2 foot and 1 foot spin every session but I can't seem to get it right.
I learned all these skills on off ice skates. I only had one skating lesson on ice. So I am a complete beginner when it comes to being in actual skates!
