Thanks Taryl! just did this job with the assistance of this video. I was actually under the mower watching the video and getting the belt on the correct pulleys, with the correct twist. Now I'm back in action! Now there's your dinner!!! Thank you !!!
5 years ago and people still hitting this video! Great job! Thank you. Side note if you still check comments: Have you ever replaced the drive lever valve seals on the hydro drive.
I picked up a GT 5000 to use as a snowplow up here in the Northeast. Your videos are awesome. I couldn’t wait to get to fixing it after I threw a belt. Great channel.👍🏼👍🏼😂
You know - I could not have accomplished this task before watching your video. The part about taking the wheel off and removing the belt guide (1/2" nut and stud) was what I needed to get the belt over the transmission pulley. I thank you for the excellent photography and showing the entire task all the way through including the top view of the two pulleys in front of the seat. Subscribed to your account too!
My family loves your videos Taryl, especially my 7-year-old son. And I appreciate that y'all don't use profanity. He can watch any of your videos and I don't have to worry about what he might hear. Thank you! And there's your dinner.
Jan Brigman I agree, my 9 yr son and 5yr daughter like Taryl videos. We've been watching since he started making them and my daughter, at the time, use to say to me: "dad, let's watch the funny guy."
Just to let you know, Taryl's vids are not ALL profanity-free. Occasionally they let some slip. I think there's a vid with the "Lawnmower Detectives" using some colorful language during an interrogation!
B Spin I know, but letting one slip isn't a deal breaker with me, (I've been known to let one slip in front of the kids) I just don't use cuss words in my everyday conversation. I used to, without giving it a second thought, because of my work environments it was common practice. Then one day I was cussing in front of some guy and he politely said: "you know, cussing is the verbal expression of ignorance." He wasn't being rude or condescending or anything like that but it just made sense. I quit cussing (well, 99.3% of the time) and 20 some years later I still think of that guys words. It's kinda funny actually because I work now in an industrial wastewater plant and the guys swear like sailors for the most part, but because I don't swear I've actually had guys apologize when they cuss in front of me. I just laugh and let them know that it doesn't bother me, and why I don't use those words. I think you lose respect when your dropping "f-bombs" all the time. When I watch a tool review or "how-to" video and the guy is cussing all the time I just can't take them seriously. It's like their trying to put on a some kind of front or be tough.
jhitt79 , I know what you're saying . It has surprised me a few times to find out that guys really notice that you DON"T cuss around them ! I think it just becomes a habit if you let it.
This saved my Bacon. I took the belt off easy. But didn't pay too much attention on what way it went. I was stuck for 2 hours trying to figure out he Maze of twisting belt... lol thanks again for this video and Excellent camera footage to make sure you can actually see whats what. My mower is back in action. I noticed how my old belt kept slipping off. The old belt way more V than the new V with the flat spot on the inside actually being there if you know what I mean.
First thing I did was run that thing backwards and I laughed when I did cause u told me that would happen. Thanks sir I couldn't find another video to help with this
Just got to say, your videos are So corny they are awesome, not to mention they are VERY informative. My son and l look forward to your videos every Sunday. Thank you for your content.
I appreciate what you do and try to add a little fun into your repairs. I also find a bit of irony in that covergirl had an ad on your video. Keep up the good work!
Taryl , that was one thing I did not check transmission belt it jumped off that is why it would not move thanks again for your videos they are V ery helpful thanks ! Now there's your dinner !
HiTaryl-I enjoyed your video and it helped me install my new belt. Appreciate it. I had a question regarding the lever with the red on the back of this craftsman, I removed mine and cant seem to put it back. Do you have a video regarding this?
thanks so much for the video...I ordered the belt today, so all the fun will start soon...I almost know I'm gonna 'twist it' the wrong way convinced it's right 'til we go backwards in forward...grrr...lol
I really hope you got this and I really need to know if you have a video of how to install a 42 or 52 in snowblower attachment to this exact tractor I cannot for the life of me figure out how to put it on or if I'm missing stuff
@taryl fixes all Hey thanks for the video! Can you tell me what part number the 1/2inch belt keeper in the rear right fender is? I can’t find it in the part manual. Thanks!
Great video. I bought an old Craftsman GT 46" cut with Kohler 20hp V-Twin motor. Can't find the specific model number or serial number on the machine. I'm wanting to get an owner's or operators manual. But I don't know what I have. Any ideas how I can specifically identify what garden tractor I have?
Taryl I got a simplicity landlord hydrostatic 18hp. It run great the only issue I have is the neutral release lever in the rear wont actually put the tractor into nuetra. The lever moves like it should just doesn't go into neutral. I can't find any videos on this issue.
I know nothing about Simplicity tractors, but I can think of two different issues. The lever is broken. Easy enough to check, but you might have to pull some parts off to see it better. What I think should happen is when you pull? the lever, this pushes down two buttons on the transmission. Those buttons on hydro transmission tend to seize up. Try spraying them with some decent penetrating fluid (PB Blaster, Kroil, etc). Then work them back and forth. They should pop back up, but might not. Generally when starting the tractor, they may pop up. If not, you will have to free them up. That lever is only to push the tractor by hand, so you should never need to use it unless you run into a problem. Its also not advised to push it far either.
Hi I 'v been fixing small engines,, tractors & such for 35 years .BIG HOBBIE .... My tractor is missing the hoop guide which was apparently broken off for some reason. I am having a difficult time finding a replacement for it because I do not know the exact name of the part. Any idea where I can find one or what the actual part number is? Thanks in advance!
Reason im asking, is because i picked up this exact tractor only with the 25 horse and it doesnt move. The belts are there and going the right way, but i got nothing.. Any ideas
Taryl....I'm flat out stuck! How did you remove the bolt that holds the clutch & drive pulley in the front on? Turning it CCW just causes the drive pulley to turn backwards, CW forwards. Do you have to somehow clamp the pulleys in place before trying to loosen the bolt? Does anyone know?
FYI for anyone with a snow blower attachment on their lawn tractor. Mine is a 46" blower attached to a 1995 Craftsman 25hp V-Twin. I was finally successful in replacing my ground drive belt! The snow blower attachment is mounted on the tractor such that it takes up so much space under the tractor that it is impossible to remove the drive & clutch pulleys without first removing the blower attachment to get the needed space. BUT, you CAN replace the drive belt without removing the blower attachment!! It is a bitch but the secret is to pry the blower attachment 's auger belt off of the clutch pulley and cut/remove the old drive belt. Then, starting at the transmission end, work your new ground drive belt towards the front of the tractor ABOVE the auger belt, then slide it up and over the clutch pulley and into the drive pulley's track. (This assumes that you have followed Taryl's advice and removed the rear/right wheel & guide bolt first and set the parking brake to gain needed slack ). Then re-attach the auger belt on the clutch pulley. Now, starting with the transmission, follow Taryl's instructions to route the new belt as he showed. You will find that, with the new belt already around the drive pulley, you do not have much slack at all to work with BUT the new belt will stretch just enough to allow you to route it correctly. Once you have made sure it IS routed correctly, over the correct pulleys and belt guides, re-install the guide bolt in the wheel well, re-mount your tire and wheel weights if you have them. DONE! It took me about 3 hours total to do this but my rig now again has forward/neutral/reverse and the blower augers work correctly. Come to think of it, I believe this is also how I replaced the ground drive belt on my other Craftsman 19HP lawn tractor with a 42" mower attached without taking it or the clutch & drive pulleys off, but it was so long ago I forgot how I did it.
I need a deck belt part no. 144200 and all of the ones on the internet have bad reviews and there is no where local to get one, anyone have any suggestions on where to get a quality belt?
I retired from 40 years of long haul trucking and I've started working on small engines as a means to supplement my income. There is a problem I've run across where the mower is worth saving, but the hydro is shot.. do you have any tips on servicing an "unservicable" hydro tranny? That would make a great vid!
I have an older Craftsman GT similar to the one in the video. when I move the travel lever to neutral the tractor moves slowly in reverse. how do I adjust this
I have the exact same tractor and had to replace this belt. Only thing that was stumping me me was the “above belt keeper” part on that diagram. There was no above belt keeper and the belt seem to be riding up against a console bracket there above that bottom belt keeper. Help!
At 9:46 shows the belt in the “hoop” you called it then the other part of the belt sitting there at the back of the “hoop” rod. Looks like yours is running a touch on the upper bracket holding the steering shaft .

Taryl can you show a way to safely and properly upgrade our headlights. Was thinking mounting aftermarket fog lights from auto parts store (craftsman lt2000)
I just installed a drive belt on a mower just like that one a couple of summers ago for some people I know, & apparently I did it right because she hasn't called me saying 1st was reverse. I got lucky on that one. I wish I had seen this 1st because I didn't take anything off, no pulleys, no clutch, not one thing & it was an aggravating bear to route that new belt.
Wow thank ya for what you Do been watchin ya for a While ya Make it so that Little People Understand ya with some fun in it too As I Say Owell Don,t try it ya Never learn ther Keep Up The Good Work Sign me Up Ya Worth it Thks again Farmer
I have been looking at every drive belt video I can find but my problem is not the drive belt. On my Craftsman Garden Tractor the belt tension spring broke and I cannot figure out where it attaches to. It might not hurt to mention this spring in the belt replacement videos since it is an important part of the ground drive system that also fails sometimes. As long as you are under there with the camera you could show the spring and what not and talk about it. In my case the parts diagram is of no use in showing where the spring goes. I would take the mower to Taryl if I could. Even when I find out where the spring goes I have been hearing that it is very difficult to put it on
Best video I found! I watched several others and none said anything about the rear belt guide pin. I just bought a GT6000, replaced the belt, and it shredded it within a few times of using it. The guide pin is missing at the back for the transmission pulley (the hole for the pin is there, just no pin). I can`t find the pin so I am going to attempt to fabricate one with a shoulder bolt. Do you think that will fix my problem? I appreciate any help!
Even without that it shouldnt shred it. Double check your routing and make sure you don't have any seized pulleys. Also belt quality, I recommend staying away from Jason/Megadyne belts or any cheap black belt. Get a good kevlar belt
@@jeremydavis2595 Ok, thanks! All of the pulleys are good and I triple checked the routing, I am thinking it was a cheap Chinese belt (the belt came with the mower when I bought it).
Hi and thanks for the good video. I have a question. I have the same mowed and that drive belt broke and the mower still drives perfectly fine reverse and forward. My mower is hydrostatic. Does this belt drive something else on this mower? Should it still be able to drive fine with the belt broke? Thanks so very much.
HI Teryl. Love your videos. Question.?? is there any way to fix a briggs engine with a twisted crankshaft. Mine will kick back when trying to start. Checked the flywheel key and it seems OK. Can I put an offset key or try to move the coil..??
Paul Bevens Its a sheared flywheel key, it has off set your timing causing the kick back. You will need a puller to remove the fly wheel. The key has sheared off, usually caused by backfiring, water in the fuel will do it or using ether to start a stubborn engine. I have gotten several free lawn mowers due to a sheared key. Sad part is they are less than a dollar. I made good money on those mowers.
What if I get someone else and i dont have the money to fix it, is it ok if I get my physically fit self with coveralls on to push the riding mower in neutral while other person steers?
Taryl, as usual, great video but you never talked about the correct "twist" needed for the belt, or did I miss it? Also, I have the same tractor but it has a snow blower attachment on it so working on it is just not as easy because I can't raise it up to get under it without taking off the blower attachment which I'd rather not do. I'm doing the work outside here in NH in 25 deg. weather on my driveway where the tractor just stopped moving. Any tips on doing this belt replacement without taking off the blower attachment or is that absolutely necessary.
Hey Taryl, love the vids and have a question, I have a simplicity 2006 hydrostatic drive, is there a way to change the hydrolic fluid in the trans ? There is nothing in my maintenance manual thats why I'm asking.. Any help??
hey taryl im making a frankenstein mower putting craftsman 21.5 hp motor on john deere 285 i need an electric clutch for 1 1/4 inch shaft im having a hard time finding what i need i thought you might like a challenge. thanks
So I have a slightly newer mower than the one here but with the EXACT same pulley lay out, however, the belt guid loop is on the opposite side. Do you think it’s possible that someone in the past may have messed it up?
Taryl, I'm trying to do an engine swap on a 1990 gt6000. I don't want it scraped and I know you don't either. Old engine was horizontal opposed briggs and they are odd like slippers. Can this old sears gt6000 be made into vertical common engine mower with minimal parts maybe just and idler and a different engine plate. Like how much is it going to take to retrofit this honey make her live again. She's a beast. Her deck is so solid
I put this belt on exactly step by step the way you've done it and my transmission still runs in Reverse what am I doing wrong, the only difference is mine is not a hydrostat

When you lift up the tractor seat there should be a sticker there with the model and serial number?
Great video help very much thank you 👍
Would this be similar to the Snapper TT14H33 tractor?
LT14H33
Very cool. Thanks, Guys!

Even when I find out where the spring goes I have been hearing that it is very difficult to put it on
I need to find a hood grill for one like this if anyone has a part number for it that would be awesome
Hey their Taryl have you ever done a video on a transmission tear down on a lawn boy rototiller
Taryl, do you make house calls?
@@NubsWithGuns I didn't need to take the PTO or the blower attachment off. See my followup post below for details.
Junior needs more supervision Taryl.....Or maybe a few weeks of small engine repair bootcamp...hmmm.
Andrew Munchkin funny cuz we have a Bootcamp one in the works, stay tuned!
Dinner ? That sounds like a buffet ! 8 )
Good video
Hey Taryl, love the vids and have a question, I have a simplicity 2006 hydrostatic drive, is there a way to change the hydrolic fluid in the trans ? There is nothing in my maintenance manual thats why I'm asking.. Any help??
My gear drive trans does not have a belt guide bolt
I just did a belt job on my tracker and I which was a pain in the butt we got her done
hey taryl im making a frankenstein mower putting craftsman 21.5 hp motor on john deere 285 i need an electric clutch for 1 1/4 inch shaft im having a hard time finding what i need i thought you might like a challenge. thanks
Twist belt right, ok got it.
Taryl can you do more Exmark videos.
Aaron Cover we'll try. Gotta get more in the shop to do them on
Thank you check out the new 96" Exmark diesel if you have a chance.
I can relate to the whole I can't remember anything but I'm not even 40 thing. Lol
So I have a slightly newer mower than the one here but with the EXACT same pulley lay out, however, the belt guid loop is on the opposite side. Do you think it’s possible that someone in the past may have messed it up?
front end looks like the front of my hoover vakume cleaner!
Good God. We put a man on the moon in 1969 and this is the best thing they could come up with?
Taryl, I'm trying to do an engine swap on a 1990 gt6000. I don't want it scraped and I know you don't either. Old engine was horizontal opposed briggs and they are odd like slippers. Can this old sears gt6000 be made into vertical common engine mower with minimal parts maybe just and idler and a different engine plate. Like how much is it going to take to retrofit this honey make her live again. She's a beast. Her deck is so solid
Nah man... I might have a "big fat hand" but I always get it in, Im a make sure that thing works! Ya feel me? 😎😉🙃
I put this belt on exactly step by step the way you've done it and my transmission still runs in Reverse what am I doing wrong, the only difference is mine is not a hydrostat
You have the belt twist going the wrong way, try it the other way
Taryl Fixes I had it going through the keepers wrong thanks
theres your dinner!@! en quebecois la job est faites :)
