  • Dr. Carlotti-Smith sees the humanities as undervalued by her students and her institution. But she knows from experience just how valuable literature can be, if only we embrace it- and the professors who teach it. Here is her case for why literature and liberal arts are still important, in any higher learning degree. Dr. Carlotti-Smith is a writer, scholar, and an adjunct professor of comparative literature at the University of Tulsa in the Global Scholars Program. She also currently serves as a Research Fellow at the Oklahoma Center for the Humanities. Dr. Carlotti-Smith earned her Ph.D. in French at the University of Virginia. She specializes in French and Francophone literature, culture, and film, with a focus on Francophone Caribbean and New World Studies, postcolonial studies, and migration studies. A self-professed “third culture kid,” Dr. Carlotti-Smith is a dual citizen of Brazil and the United States, and was raised in Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore, Japan, and Belgium, has studied and worked in France, and is fluent in English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish. She particularly enjoys snuggling and reading with her 3- and 7-year-old daughters and their rescue dog, Abby. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I love that quote about literature being forced critical thinking that cannot be Googled. I hope this is where the world is going soon. Into a place of books and curious reading, rather than simply Googling and having things fed to you.

Thank you so much for this - I'm finally following my heart and transferring to a major in English Literature, coming from a biology major. At times I get anxiety about it, wondering how what I am learning will be useful, aside from the fact that I love it. This is just what I needed to hear.

As someone who made a similar switch from biochemistry to Spanish literature, let me say: don’t let the anxiety get the better of you. That switch may mean you’ll have to be more creative in what you do after school, but it’ll be all the more fulfilling. That degree is worth it and so are you.

Dear Denielle, Thanks so much for your speed in which you remind me of preparing Cambridge C1- English Exam. I failed it a couple of times. However, I never have lost my perseverance to do the exam over and over again. As a financial analyst, With reference to the return of investment, time spent, this is my worst deal. However, When it comes to understanding humanities, becoming comfortable with ambiguity, and making me a rounded person, the answer to this valuable investment is definitely "yes". Well appreciated.

Literature ... Storytelling ... is what makes us human. Alas, our market-driven society doesn't value such things and so our own humanity is diminished.

I think that this portrayal of the issues plaguing our education system are in this video succinct and accurate, but follow a weird preamble which portrays what some might call a "sob story". The title alludes to a conversation which I would expect to have a more intellectual approach, as it deserves. But I was severely disappointed, as a high schooler could have made this same argument in two minutes without whining for the remaining eight. I'm sure you're a great lady, and a great teacher. Focus on the future and be the change you want to see, don't whine about the present and the past.

I am sympathetic to the speaker’s career circumstances but this video came off as whiney, self-centered, and it fell short of the implicit insight suggested by its title.
As an old mentor used to say, “The world response to seed, not need.”
Education, especially in America, is broken. Still, I can’t help but feel that this was a wasted opportunity to demonstrate why the humanities should be taken more seriously.
