- President Joe Biden's rigid pro-Israel stance would have been considered convention for United States policy 50 years ago.
"It's not a mainstream position any more," says Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East programme at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC.
Alterman tells host Steve Clemons that Hamas's surprise attack on Israel, and Israel's continuing destruction of the Gaza Strip, will force major changes in the political leadership of Palestinians and Israelis.
There will be no progress unless Israel makes way for a solution "that gives dignity and some sense of self-determination to the Palestinians," says Alterman.

A good portion of Democrats support Israel and almost all of the Republicans who make up 50% of voters. So your 70% is inaccurate. Why do you think the top politicians from each party were at the Israeli rally? Look it up Hakeem Jeffries - the Democratic majority leader and the Democratic leader of the Senate Chuck Shumer were both there-. Older people vote younger people protest.
i haven’t watched this yet but as an American i say absolutely yes. Most Americans are sick of foreign wars and support a ceasefire in Gaza and we don’t want our troops in Syria either.

Gaza and the West Bank were held by Egypt and Jordan for 18 of the last 75 years. Then Egypt and Jordan attacked Israel again -- Israel only regained the territory because of yet another war of aggression by the Arabs. Israel tried to give Gaza back to Egypt along with the Sinai peninsula, but Egypt refused. Netanyahu was democratically elected, and won't win re-election after the war. Compare to Hamas which killed their political opposition, and hasn't held an election since. I'm not saying Israel is perfect, but it's far from fascist, compared to any of its neighbors at least.

The problem is that experts like him will usually have a bias which prevents them from understanding the objective truth. Alterman is an American who works for a think tank which has as its core the belief that the United States is the most important country in the world and, as such, is always right even when it is completely wrong. There is no place for the USA in the Middle East any more than any other country and it has zero standing with Palestinians because it supports Israel materially and politically through its financial donations and military weapons. Jon Alterman is delusional when he says "nobody wanted a catastrophe like October 7th to happen". Clearly Hamas did. Who is more likely to help rebuild Gaza after the war ends: Hamas or Israel (the latter assuming Hamas is removed)? Hamas has not done anything to help Gazan civilians, literally ever -- they spend everything they receive on weapons and fortifications, apart from the billions their leaders in Qatar confiscated, and are on video (released by themselves) digging up water pipes to make rockets, and openly admit they don't consider Gazan civilians their responsibility in any way. Whereas Israel at least pretends to care about Gazan civilians, and were the ones that originally built the Al Shifa hospital.

It's as if a wealthy child was given a Lamborghini to wreak havoc in a disadvantaged neighborhood. What if the US cancelled Israel's annual $3,000,000,000 military aid packages (they could redirect the military hardware to Ukraine) and each year make a similar amount of money available for the reconstruction of Gaza? Making sure that Israel would not be allowed access to any of the money as they would just use it to create a more efficient prison named New Gaza for any surviving and returning Palestinians. Maybe if Palestinians weren't being persecuted, dispossessed, forced to live under siege in an apartheid occupied state, subject to constant surveillance, arrest, and imprisonment by IDF forces, needing permission from some Israeli authority to go to work or get a loaf of bread, they wouldn't be so inclined to support any real resistance to their decades long occupation.
