I never write comments but after watching this interview I had to express my deep admiration to Senator Mitchell. What a brilliant, generous human being. A role model for all of us today !
Thank you Rory and Alistair for continuing to bring us extraordinary and fascinating people that most of us would otherwise never have the privilege of 'meeting'. You both always interview these people with nothing but interest and respect, opening up thoughts and stories we may not hear otherwise. Well done. Thank you from Australia
I grew up in the Rep. of Ireland on the border with Fermanagh - not far from Omagh. I lived through numerous bombscares. As part of our daily life we had to manoeuvre our family car around concrete barricades daily to get to the local shops. We had to avoid roads which were previously blown up. Helicopters, armoured cars, army checkpoints were the norm. I came of age the year of the peace process in 1999. I will never forget the moment the newsflash came on the TV to announce the peace process. My father and I couldn’t believe it!!! I went to Queens University a few months later in Sept 1999. I owe so much gratitude to this man for opening up my future at the age of 18. I still live in a peaceful Northern Ireland, with my husband and 3 kids and we love it here. Thank you Senator Mitchell - for everything ❤
A remarkable man from wonderful parents. May George Mitchell live on for many more years. Thank you George for your remarkable contribution to Irish peace process. A brilliant listen.
I am grateful to George Mitchell and The Rest is Politics for this presentation. Astoundingly, Mr. Mitchell remains as crystal clear as ever and a refreshingly humane person. Many thanks!
So many stories to recall. His relationship with Muskie and Dole. Very human and real. His leadership in Northern Ireland and the relationships he had with those who would oust him. Again amazing and true. The reminder of the ancient conflict between Sunni and Shiites a reminder that two hundreds more years conflict is a quarrel . For me, it’s the advancement of weapons of mass destruction and our primal tribal feuds. My best and only hope is we learn to listen as Mitchell practiced to quell escalations that will cause all out nuclear war. Truman pulled the trigger and Kennedy managed a compromise that saved the world but may have contributed to his assassination. May have. We forget we aren’t fighting siege wars anyone and too many think tough talk brings peace. That’s how WWI got started. Political leaders thought it would be a short war fought by infantry and cavalry. It was fought in trenches with machine guns and the slaughter was horrendous. May Mitchell’s example show us a way to peace in Ukraine and Palestine. 🙏🙏🙏
I’m 66. I studied politics at Sydney Uni including a semester on US politics. I learned more about it in the first half hour listening to George M. Thanks. The best interview in years.
This man is a beacon of integrity and humanity. His life is a shining example for the world. Good wishes for your continued happiness and a happy 92nd birthday in August!Thank you, guys, for the interview, so professional and genial.
Alistair & Rory - you have the best podcast. You are sincere & ask questions that get to the heart of the matter. Important guests. Senator Mitchell is still so impressive at 91. Steel trap mind. Open heart. Thank you.
If only everyone in public life was so dignified and respectful. Shed a few tears listening to his stories about his family and the Omagh bombing survivors. Great episode!
Took the words out of my mouth (or 'off my fingers'?). What an incredible man. Such humility and competence. And a better memory at 91 than I have at 31 🥲
Not that I want to sound sarcastic but it always amazes me the invocation of “god”! In this day and age and there are still people holding superstitious beliefs!
Thank you so much for your brilliant interview with Senator Mitchell! I'm only 58 yrs old and feeling every day of it, but if I could be as intelligent and eloquent at his age I would be so grateful. I had the honor and privilege as a freelance journalist and human rights activist of meeting with and covering the Good Friday Agreement back in 98 and as a betting man never thought that it would actually work this long compared to the ongoing Middle East crisis and our inability to deal with and reconcile our legacy of slavery and Jim Crow in my own country. Statesman of his caliber are so bloody lacking in our own time in both America and the UK. I'm planning on voting for Harris in my voting booth in Pittsburgh,PA and God help us how it turns out come this Tuesday.
A very interesting listen. Thank you both, and thank you Mr. Mitchell, it was good of you to share your thoughts, hopefully you can continue to share them for a long while yet.
What an outstanding interview with Senator Mitchell! He is clearly a man with a lot of empathy and driven by moral values. What a great mind and eloquence he still has at his age!!!! We need more men like him in this world to make a difference. ❤
Thank you so much for bringing the work of George Mitchell into focus. He is a truly wise and decent man, and his insight about negotiation in ‘intractable’ conflict is something we need to preserve. It took 5 years of listening and building relationships. For generations we in the US keep hoping that some magic president or negotiator will swoop in to the Middle East and fix things, but it will probably take decades of continual listening and building trust instead of the fitful efforts (a few days at Camp David, etc) that we’ve mustered so far.
Hi, what a delightful guest. At 91 he is amazing. And such a gentle and genuine smile. A shame the World doesn't have more of his type.. Thank you. Valerie Farrington.
I am listening in from Nairobi Kenya. I have actually been making an effort to do a postgraduate programme in Pharmaceutical Analysis at Queen's University and that is what captured my attention. I am from the Luo community who live around Lake Victoria. I am so moved by the man Senator George Mitchell is. His integrity, compassion and commitment are inspiring. I wish more politicians especially in Africa were more like him. So glad I came across this interview. Thank you Rory and Alastair
Outstanding interview! An amazing, brilliant, generous, gentle, committed man. A great life story full of great achievements. Thank you, Rory and Alistair and George.
Thank you Senator George Mitchell and Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart for this incredibly moving interview. Senator George Mitchell’s compassion and capacity to truly listen and mediate in conflict resolution and depth of historical perspective has given me hope today. What a wonderful man. Thank you so much for all your work in bringing about peace. Thank you so much Rory and Alistair for your brilliant insightful videos and podcasts. You are becoming my companions in my political deepening and hope in our very geopolitically challenging yet beautiful world. 🙏🏻💙🕊️
Thank you so much for this interview. Absolutely fascinating person and stories. While I disagree with almost EVERYTHING AC says and 80% of RS, this is exactly why I listen to every pod. It's important to me, to have my positions challenged, but then every now and again you get a pod like this. Here AC & I are aligned.... Could listen to him speak for hours.... TY TRIP team for this content.
One of your best interviews boys, what a remarkable man, highlighting a very wonderful man, in a time when we need reminding that there are very, very good people!
I am gobsmacked ! The depth of knowledge/understanding and geopolitical literacy demonstrated by this 90 plus year old gentleman compared to the dim-witted, frivolous, vulgar, grotesque conman and elected president of the US named Trump is just mind-blowing.
Such an excellent channel! Im a new subscriber. This interview was fascinating! Such an easy listen on tough subjects! George Mitchell is an exemplary human! Thank you for what you all do!!
The guy knows his country’s history and what a brilliant video I too could listen to him all day the knowledge, understanding and judgement he brings is amazing. And he comes across as a strong and decent man.
This is worth every single minute you spend watching this programme. Full of life lessona from a man who has been intimately involved in the peace process in Ireland and other world events. A rare opportunity to learn how to listen to others.
What a powerful lesson on the importance of truly listening to people. This has been such an educational interview, with a wise, humble and beautifully grounded human being. It has given me perspective and hope for the future. Thank you so much for this interview!
Listening to this great - and hasten to add, spiritually healing - interview of yours from another epicenter of perpetual and pervasive conflict and chaos and human suffering in the world, Horn of Africa. And I just want to leave the following words here: what a pleasure to listen to such a blessed man! An unassuming and simple man, yet a wholesome personality that effuses a depth of wisdom that I can only associate with the incorporeal entity of angels. May he continue to persevere against his cancer and live on to happily enjoy his remaining life on earth!
I just listened to a giant of the world. Thank you so much for having George Mitchell on your podcast. Were it not for his age, there is a man who has the capacity to heal the wounds of the Middle East. I will also never forget the name Claire Gallagher. What a desperately profound story that was. Boy of boy. I am moved. Thank you.
He would have been hounded out of office for dating someone a lot younger than him. There would be no peace agreement without him. Ireland owes him a huge amount.
@ you must have some sort of cognitive decline and forgot the fact that Trump married someone a lot younger than him as well. I guarantee you that he didn’t get hounded out of office by the media or electorate because he married someone much younger.
What a remarkable man. What a clear and well-ordered mind. Which begs the question that the notion that an ageing mind is necessarily a deteriorating mind.
What an extraordinary man. You, Alastair and Rory asking, probing, bringing out Sen Mitchell's many and varied comments. He harkins back to a different time in politics in comparison to today's awful rancour. But he is hopeful thinking can turn around for the better and what a hopeful note for many viewers of this podcast.
One of the best and most insightful interviews of a political person I have watched. Your questions drew Sen Mitchell out to reveal the most profound insights into human behaviour.
Being born in post-Troubles Northern Ireland, I count myself lucky to have never experienced political violence. I cannot thank your guest enough for his work here.
What a wonderful man. And to think he came from such a humbled and tragic beginning. To rise above it shows the most incredible character. There is yet hope for the human race.
Great episode. What an amazing man, George Mitchell is! What a breath of fresh air into the current political environment. I noted that when he listed the swing states in the current election, he listed them in order of their distance from Maine. Bravo!
The power of deep listening and coming to something without prejudice. Quite extraordinary. So uplifting in his desire to be constantly learning. Thank you all involved for sharing this.
I never write comments but after watching this interview I had to express my deep admiration to Senator Mitchell. What a brilliant, generous human being. A role model for all of us today !
Another outstanding interview. Sen. Mitchell is thoughtful, eloquent, deep and light. Uplifting. Thank you, Rory and Alastair.
Thank you George Mitchell and America for your amazing contribution to peace in Ireland. What a great interview!

Wow! Thank you for this comment. I had no idea that an American helped turn your country around a bit.
A remarkable man from wonderful parents. May George Mitchell live on for many more years. Thank you George for your remarkable contribution to Irish peace process. A brilliant listen.

Excellent interview what an incredibly intelligent, genuine, tuned in and humble man. Thanks for this
If only everyone in public life was so dignified and respectful. Shed a few tears listening to his stories about his family and the Omagh bombing survivors. Great episode!
What an incredible interview, clearly George Mitchell is a man filled with wisdom and compassion.
Wonderful, wonderful interview. Senator Mitchell restores my faith in politics and politicians. Thank you.
Took the words out of my mouth (or 'off my fingers'?). What an incredible man. Such humility and competence. And a better memory at 91 than I have at 31 🥲

I saved this podcast in my library to return to for education, encouragement, and perspective. Thank you for this amazing interview.
I rarely comment, but my god what an insightful conversation! As Alastair said I too could listen to countless hours of this man.
Uplifting, I hung on every word George said. As an Irishman thank you Rory, Alistair. Excellent interview. Wishing George many more years.

Wonderful interview. Thank you both!
Having lived through the conflict and left Ireland I cried with gratitude for this wonderful man. Bless you all and thank you 🙏🥰
Just brilliant. I hope that his vision of a civil senate comes to pass.
Beyond words, his wisdom... Brought me to tears. Thank you Alistair and Rory. 🙏🏼💕
Senator Mitchell is a hero of mine. His efforts to negotiate peace in Ireland are legendary. He's a good guy.
What a remarkable interview of a fascinating, intelligent and profoundly wise human being. Thank you and well done.

Very well said and I agree with your sentiment. We urgently need more Senator Mitchells in the US and Europe.
Fellow Pittsburgher here. We must resist and not obey the fascist MAGA regime! Give us liberty or give us death!

That was the most wonderful and absorbing cast to date.
Really Enjoyed that, another great episode, what a great man, and what a life he's had.
Amazing person .
I hope I'm half as sharp as George Mitchell if I make it to his age. What an astonishing and historical figure. Amazing interview.
I would like to be that sharp now, at 50
agreed

A True Gent ! 👍🤔 ( And a Must Watch )
Senator Mitchell should’ve been President of the United States.
He would have been hounded out of office for dating someone a lot younger than him. There would be no peace agreement without him. Ireland owes him a huge amount.

This is a master thesis on negotiation.

Absolutely brilliant episode. So inspiring. Thank you so much for such an amazing interview.
What a fantastic guy!
Fantastic interview with a true statesman. Really throws into sharp contrast the standard of US politics today.
Amazing discussion. The US could really use a few more George Mitchells right now.
Great episode. What an amazing man, George Mitchell is! What a breath of fresh air into the current political environment. I noted that when he listed the swing states in the current election, he listed them in order of their distance from Maine. Bravo!
No wonder George Mitchell turned out to be a good, interesting and informative man with the Mother he was lucky to have had❤
His father was the key
The shocking decency of this guy! 😯
What a spectacular human being. I hope in 60 years I'll be able to say I've made even a tiny fraction of George Mitchell's contribution to the world.
I feel like I'm a better person for having listened to this.
What a great man .Mr Mitchell will go to his maker knowing that he did great work for Ireland 🇮🇪 and Britain 🇬🇧
Great talk. Inspiring guy.
The power of deep listening and coming to something without prejudice. Quite extraordinary. So uplifting in his desire to be constantly learning. Thank you all involved for sharing this.
What an amazing, wise, inspirational human being. Thank you for this interview.
