Spec wise, the M3 beats the S5 in a drag race for sure. I think the 0-60 time of the S5 is within half a second of the M3. Not everyone is going to be drag racing these type of cars though. They both "feel" quick enough around town and daily driving. They each have very different characteristics though. The S5 has more low end torque and has all-wheel drive which allows it to have faster launches than the M3, but the M3 will catch up quickly. The Audi S5 "feels" quicker due to the low end-torque and manual transmission allowing you to feel the g-forces. You don't necessarily have to downshift in the S5 to pass someone. The M3 has a high revving engine on the other hand, and you have to reach those high rpms to get into the power. I think this makes the M3 feel slower on launches compared to the S5. Most of the time you have to downshift the DCT to pass someone. I would say M3 with DCT more fun on a track and S5 a great touring car.
