05. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room - Live in New York City
--------
This year has been devastating to so many people around the world. Everybody has been affected by this pandemic, wherever you live and whatever you do. For the live music fans, we miss that energy, that connection. Shows and Distancing, my third album and first live album, has arrived at a time where I hope at least some sense of relief and nostalgia can be provided to you.
Recorded throughout last year on the road in the USA, this record takes you through support sets with Justin Hayward (Moody Blues), headline shows, a live duet from Los Angeles and even excerpts from my first ever headline concert from over the pond. New York, Florida and California, three of my favourite places. I hope to return soon!
In addition to the record, I am excited to announce a one off live streaming event from my home in the U.K. on November 1st. The album and concert ticket can be purchased as a bundle from this link: tinyurl.com/cdandconcertbundle
I'm incredibly proud of this record and the quality of the audio captured. Josh Clark's mixes are SUPERB. I'll be releasing live videos every week for the foreseeable future so don't forget to hit 'SUBSCRIBE' to be notified x

I'm so glad that there isn't one ad ruining a perfect performance.
have you ever tried adblock plus............no ads at all....wouldnt use the net without it.....
Start using brave browser. De-centralised completely. No fucking ads.
@@sirdgar you mean Adblock what is the plus
Wow shaggy is insane! from exposing monsters to jedi in guitar.
hahaha ... scooby dooby doo..
“I hope that’s your belly scoob"
2:56
Sound engineer: Do I need to set up a mic?
Mike: Yeah.
SE: What are you gonna use it for?
M: I'll headbutt it.
SE: Whatever.
OMG hahahah
he did it perfectly on beat too lol
😂😂😂😂
@@Jameloaf it was actually a percussion line
This made me laugh so much harder than it should've. lmaoo
2:00 "You'll be a b*tch because you can" nice! haha
That mic headbutt at 2:58 is genius
Hahahahaha 😅😅😅
Ikr, all the way he managed to keep the beat was amazing
That cheeky smile afterwards too 😅
saw a guy do that and his long hair got caught in the mic stand. had to stop the song.
Noggin!
This is what I wanna become. To not be playing 4 chord songs on demand. To be playing for yourself, and also having an audience that appreciates.
Yes mate! He is wonderful!
Just keep practicing, there is no secret
hes playing like 3 chords actually
@@user-xu4xw6jm7d and this actually is a 4 chord song. Haha.
5 chords here lol. E, A, C#m, B, F#M
This is totally unrealistic. As a JM fan myself for over a decade, I am stunned by the amount of work put into this and how wonderful it sounds.
In a small group he lesson he casually dropped
“While a more complex song like Slow Dancing will take two weeks to arrange”
Needless to say, we hung on to that comment, lol.
Imagine if you were at this venue with a broken heart...You’d wish this never ever stopped
And he's only using 2% of his power
But 100% soul
Which one would you say he goes super Sayan ?
@@peace_love_unity I'm also using 100% of my soul when playing. Which is none.
I think no one got the shaggy meme reference, so I'm here to say- Nice one!
scientifically speaking, no.
your body is burning so much energy at all times, even when you are sleeping you are loosing weight at an alarming rate and done continuously you would die under a week.
BUT music does feed the soul, and cover songs are a greasy burger!
The balance you've found between techniques is amazing. Never too much, never too little. Sonically amazing. Cheers Mike
Tulmar that’s kind thank you 🙏
That's why he is The great
That’s the perfect way to describe Mike’s playing. It’s always just exactly what it needs to be.
It's because it's not the technique alone, he is speaking through the instrument
With a cover of this magnitude we know there is no limit to Shaggy's powers.
Unreal, goosebumps... I've been paying guitar for 30 years, played in a few bands and did some touring. This is how it's done. The way he playfully headbutts the mic, or how he gets the audience to finish the song... some people have it, some people don't. This guy wrote the book on it! Bravo
@Tjokkaflens Mike has the stage presence, Tommy exudes wonder. Ive had the pleasure of seeing both live. They’re friends and surely share their tricks.
The greatest guitar players are so humble, especially Tommy. The ‘book’, if written by either of these two, went without copyright.
@@IronInforcersecond Couldn't have said it better man.
The only dude allowed to play this song in a music store lol
why cant you play this song in a music store ?
@@pickleknuckle284 I think it’s just a musicians joke a bit like you’re ‘not allowed’ to play stairway to heaven is a music store.
@GhostNZ fair enough, just seen a couple of jokes on Instagram about it, it’s a great song anyway and this version blew me away!
Mike is the only one who can play stairway in any music store of his choice, dude is unbelievable on guitar
If John will see this amazing guitar cover, for sure he's proud.
I met Mike after a show in Derry, Northern Ireland. He was an absolute gentleman.
@4:34."You still out there New York?" Crowds been transfixed in stunned, mesmerized silence for four and a half minutes!
Thats exactly what I thought.... The absolute silence up till then. His brilliance and this song together are so pleasing and satisfying....almost stop breathing so You don't miss even one tiny part!
So beautiful Mike!
Thanks Lari!
aaaaaaamo vcs 2 taqueopariuuuu
Now that would be a collab to die for!! Mike and Lari. WOW!
Lari!!!!!
Recientemente descubrí tu música lari, me inspiras, tan hermosamente
It sounds crystal clear with humane vibe!
That's what I'm going for with the live record. It's about the audience as much as the guitar playing, especially as we all miss that togetherness right now.
@@mikedawesofficial
We are collectively individual.
We all laugh love, cry and fear.
Music is the soul of life.
Thank you for sharing :)
Dude… your talent needs to be shared with the whole world. End of story. Your name needs to be in the conversation with guys that changed what the guitar was used for. No longer is it used for solely melodic purposes, or even percussive. You’ve headed this new genre that has made the acoustic guitar the band. I have no words.
❤️
Look up finger style, clint Eastwood
Luca!
I actually agree. First time hearing him my exact words were that he sounds like an entire band. A well put together one too, not just a mess of good talent thrown together.
Mike is fabulous and lovely, but he's standing on the shoulders of giants with new guitar. Check out this Michael Hedges track. ua-cam.com/video/YaIN13aDbCc/v-deo.html
This is honestly the greatest cover of this song ever. Literally better than the original in my opinion
This is a great rendition of the song but the Live In L.A. version will always top it for me.
This is superb but nothing beats the original. The disrespect to John was hard wkth this comment of yours.
This cover would not even exist without the original lol
A true shame that UA-cam doesn't have a "love" button. This is beautiful.
Letting the audience finish the song is brilliant! Breathtaking! Gives me hope for humanity in these dark times.
Too beautyful to be from this earth.
Goosebumps when he quoted Fields of Gold at 4:57 what a performance, man!
true
absolutely goosebumps!
I clamped up right there, and you told us why. Upon the fields, of barley. 🤙🏾
Thanks for the love through the pandemic folks! Please do hit 'like' & comment below, it really helps with the algorithm stuff which means I ultimately make more music. If you subscribe and hit the bell I'll give you a real life in person sweaty post-show hug one day! x
Create some more cover mike! Im your fan
Thank you for your amazing sounds - first player I’ve truly enjoyed and musically “hear” since Hedges in this Realm of string play
P
I love your guitar playing mike! Especially this song. And the version with Nick!
So smooth
This is exactly what music is meant to be! You're so connected with the audience. Everything about this is so beautiful! ❤️😭
AcousticNick missing live shows so much!
Indeed. Just imagine a small club...
Found you!
@@barnab2003 Hehe, nice to see you here.
he's not a musician, he's not a guitarist, he's just not even a wizard, he's an absolute divine god
This is the most beautiful thing
The “We’re going down” parts are pure perfection
Smooth guitarist doesn't exis-
This is really peaceful
Maybe the best guitar version of this song I’ve seen on UA-cam…
4:57 starts playing fields of gold by sting for no apparent reason but it sounds great
ahh thats the name, couldnt remember, one love
I love how he used the audience as an instrument at the end.
one man, one guitar, pure silence, no room for error, talent
This man’s ability is something I believe can be the sound that brings ALL OF US (world) together.
At the end he is controlling the crowd like Freedie Mercury. He is a showman. Mike Benjamin Dawes
I saw Freddie live; he was boring.
The addition of Sting's "Fields of Gold" to "Slow Dancing" is amazing at 4:57 was neat.
That was so cool!!!
No vocals but the ones in your head. So peaceful
I toured with JM for seven years. Your vibe, touch and syncopation captured every nuance the song has had. Just beeeyoootifully done.
Welcome to the new subs and thanks to the UA-cam algorithm ❤️ Live streaming show and album/TAB info in the description ✊
New videos every week ☺️
Atlast, your videos are getting reach!
So many people get lost in the technique and forget to make music, it's one of the big negatives of social media. This is beautifully musical, a fitting tribute and technically astonishing. John needs to see this!
Absolutely I was worried that it would be another "tapping but sound awful" guys
116 with no souls. This is amazing
John Mayer is a genius.
Amazing, Mike! Glad that I've been able to watch you perform live!
He is a Genius
Lucky you 😅
very soon. people are going to see this song as a standard. probably already do. the greatest riff ever written.
Amazing indeed. I would like to also appreciate you Guus for such an incredible job you did with the fingerstyle arrangement of the song.
@@sivaramaraju3900 Guus did this arrangement? I've just given Mike a ton of praise for it in another comment haha. Whoever did, well bloody done.
I'm so lucky that I can listen to beautiful music. And Mike Dawes is extraordinary - no gimmicks, just music in his essence. Be proud, and indeed: the mixing is superb.
The only other person who's managed to melt my sole with the first ten notes was a certain Mr Mark Knopfler. And i was sat less that twenty feet from him.
You sir, are nothing short of glorious.
Thank you for doing what you do.
This is true virtuosity to me. Not the "look what I can do"-type of wizardry-virtuosity that is so easy for technically talented players to fall into, but the true meaning of the term. All the skill and technicality/skill is there, but all of it used to serve the music; to convey a musical and beautiful statement that moves me deeply every time I hear it. This is the top of guitar playing (or really just music as such) in my book.
To be Honest, His Live shows are better than other Guitarist. Even his Live sounds comparable to his studio recording that no one can achieve in acoustic Guitar field
John Mayer’s live performances are better than the studio recordings IMO
@@AznUzer I was trying to say Among the Fingerstyle Guitarist in the world.
Birat Datta well, Tommy Emmanuel? He’s great, but even greater on stage 👍
Pavel Sadowsky yeap take a look at his rendition of sultan of swings accompanied by 2 other guitarists one electric and one classical. out of this damn world.
Agreed that most artists are worse on the stage, unfortunately he is covering JM here, who might be one of the best live performs in terms of guitar ..
In a moment I was in another world. Amazing!
So spacious. Beautifully done. When these types of songs get to "breathe" like this it's nothing short of fascinating. I'm stunned.
Happy Birthday John Mayer
In a world where no one knows how to even toast bread, this guy is making flambé honey lemon crepes.
I have lost count of how many times I watched this. Totally mesmerized
You are unrealistically talented my brother.
What's wrong with people giving this a thumbs down, the slow grove in this is incredible and the devotion to master any instrument like this should and can only be respected.
The only thing I can do in mike Dawes arrangement is 6:04
@Julian Schiebe actually I did a cover of it ua-cam.com/video/xg4-mTdgTuA/v-deo.html
I can do 7:03
Just spent two hours burning through videos. Mike, your skill level is so beyond anyone I’ve seen. Effortless. I’m glad you’re out there and now I’m gonna fumble with fat fingers through your course material and hope I manage 1/10th
what have I just seen? what a beautiful way to end a show!
Man this guy is nuts. Never heard anything like this
JM will definitely be proud :) the best rendition of the song ever!!!
He gave a masterclass in my college. Bought his CD and got a picture and all :> He's super nice.
who can do it better than Mike ? I do not think so !
alle the best to Mike !
the bop on the mic would make you an instant subscriber, very wonderful mike.
This is incredible. Not just the execution, but the vulnerability of the interpretation, the 'plate' that reverberates from the fingers/amp all the way to one's inner forum. thank you !
🙏
John mayor wants your location. That was absolutely beautiful at all its glory. You are seriously gifted mate, I would pay whatever to see you live
Mike's virtuosity is insane. He's the Paganini of our age, crazy good!!!
Check out Luca Stricagnoli and Matteo Mancuso
With a wee bit of Fields of Barley. Beautiful. 🌹🌹🌹
A consummate showman and an incredibly talented guitarist!
My god you never disappoint. One of the best guitarists to have ever lived in my eyes. That definitely goes for Mayer too in my book, so this is a great combo. It's the attention to detail you manage to include in every single part at the same time. Your stuff is always crafted so carefully and performed so flawlessly, you stand out man
Godamn, that tone. So clean, full and rich.
You sir, are a gift to this planet.
SEDAP SANGAT!
anwar bila nak cover lagu ni pulak!!
I came to see you 5 years ago when you played in Cardiff. Tiny venue, was like someone's living room! Come a along ways since then Mike. Congrats dude.
Mayer would absolutely love this
What a peaceful moment !
Inspired like nothing else, especially involving the crowd. Truly touched by this performance.
After seeing it live, the recording is even more powerful. His performance is astounding, and he’ll walk RIGHT up to you if you’re in front.
Getting chills just listening to the heavenly chords of Mr. Dawes. You can tell he plays with passion also; I love the blend of John Mayer and Sting...simply sublime!
The crowd was silent like the table when the food is good. Food for the ears
a silent tear i cried
I like the incorporation of "Fields of Gold". I'd love to see/hear more of that mash up.
This has to be the most amazing guitar playing I have ever seen and heard Mike
You know the world is a messed up place when someone gives this a thumbs down 🤦🏻♂️Brilliant!
Damn that ending though..just really really clever and beautiful
Listened to this video a couple times now. Great tone, great feel, great arrangement. Especially nice to see (and hear) that the arrangement is very clean, every note or hit you play has a purpose. No showing off, just making music. Might just be my favourite solo acoustic guitar piece. I play guitar, bass and drums myself, but massive respect for pulling it off to playing them all at ones on just the guitar. Bottom line, I like this very much. But that tumbs up button doesn't represent that very well. ;)
Hearing this I bursted into tears wtf. Such an emotional performance. Fucking excellent
The power of music.
This is man is fucking crazy, he's on his own level...
insane
Me and my little man got to hear him perform this in Arvada, Colorado this year. He's such a phenomenal performer, and such a super, super nice guy.
Oh, my...
Amazing, thanks for sharing Mike. Great to hear a bit of Nick Johnston solo also! One of my favourite guitar solo ever!
Thanks! Yeah had to reference that :)
I would probably weep the entirety of his concert, in awe of his talent.
If you were to look into Mike's soul, I bet you would hear this. So stunning. First time I ever heard music from someone where no words are needed. Just wow.
This is sooooo beautiful. I'm relaxing like a jelly bear in front of the monitor. Just Awesome!
I can't understand it but I feel such joy in my heart throughout your interpretation that I'm tearing up, especially when you involve the audience. Can't help myself. Beautiful, it's like music decided to take human form and that is you my friend.
Wow. I like the ending how he inspired choir !!
more than a feeling cover 🥺🥺🙏🙏
I swear Mike made some kinda crossroads deal to play that damn good
Check out Marcin. Nothing against Mike Dawes--he's truly wonderful--but Marcin is a phenomenon, possibly the best guitarist ever. Check out his Beethoven arrangements, or his System of a Down cover. You'll be blown away, guaranteed.
Goosebumps! That ending is ethereal!
That sweet decaying echo sound!
