Haven't watched the reaction yet but did like the opening "... I'm super Christian..." Hyperboles and Catholic dogma do not go together so this should be fun. Heresy always is amusing, just as long as it not the second film😉😁
In 1973 I was 17 and had to travel about 65 miles to a northern suburb in Chicagoland, in the snow, and there were so few seats that I didn't sit with my friends. The Theatres were opening at 8:00am and had continuous showings even though, it was difficult getting in and seeing it. I had nightmares for months.....believe me this was NEW and it was scary as hell, and there wasn't anyone disputing that it was scary. Because I was scared it prompted me to read the book the film is based on.
How does this guy actually watch movies while he is telling stories? Don't talk so much during the dialog scenes. We are tuning in to get your reactions to the films. If you are missing half of it what's the point?
As someone who grow up Catholic/ went to Catholic school- I’ve always been confused as to way people are so against movies like this. It is good (The Church) battling evil.
People always seem to think that when Regan comes downstairs to the party she says: 'youre going to die up there', shes saying it to Burke Dennings, but he already left the party at that point. Shes saying it to the astronaut.
Not at all. The movie doesn't reveal, but in the novel is showed that this guy is an astronaut and he's leaving to a space mission very soon. So she says that like a curse.
No, we do know what Fr. Merrin's pills are and what they're for. They're very obviously nitroglycerin tablets because he very obviously has a heart condition. How the hell does NOBODY know what a nitroglycerin tablet is anymore??? Also, did you just actually have the balls to say that the makeup....still some of the most brilliant in the history of film....is "outdated"? I'm amazed that you noticed the makeup or anything else for that matter being that you blathered incessantly over the entire film.
No, just how you talked through the whole fking movie, No appreciation for the direction, the film, the sound, the actors etc. Just dumb ass comments not related to the movie whatsoever. So this is just a showcase to see how funny you are , It's all about you and not the film.
Nice reaction. Just a casting note, that wasn’t the grandfather from Princess Bride you saw as Demi’s uncle. You’re thinking of Peter Falk, the guy who famously played detective Colombo in the tv show Colombo. Demi’s uncle is actually played by a Greek actor named Titos Vandis.
I’ve watched a couple of reactors who inexplicably don’t like Det. Kinderman. He’s a warm-hearted, gentle man trying to solve mysterious events and even a murder. I find him to be the one of the genuine, emotional hearts of this movie (which is in my top 5 of all time). I feel like the dislike must come from a complete misreading of the actual content.
33:33 Max von Sydow? Sadly he isn't. Even considering the fact that Max lived to be almost 91 years old and played Merrin, a man 'bout 30 years older: Von Sydow was 43 years old at the time of filming. He was 44 years old at the Iraq sites in (late?) spring '73, wich were filmed later. BTW the director's cut - this is the better version.Have seen it later and the '73 cut in the cinema around 1990... Greetings. 🙂
When people talk about the makeup in the Exorcist, they only mention Regan. Max Von Sydow, who played the old priest, was in his early 40s when the Exorcist was filmed. I thought his makeup was the best. Max passed away in 2020 at the age of 90.
Speaking of the makeup: Did you realise that Max Von Sydow, who played the elderly Father Merrin, was only 40 years old when he made the movie? They needed a young man who could withstand falls and hours-long exposure to the intense cold of the refrigerated set. This is a singular, ground-breaking movie which seemed to blow up everyone's minds when they originally saw it in 1973.
People never understand that he's taking something like nitroglycerin for a bad heart: It's the one thing that the movie seems to fail to convey on a consistent basis.
You made a comment about the makeup in this movie maybe not being so great, so I thought it would be fitting to inform you that the actor who played the elderly priest and exorcist, Max Von Sydow, was actually only 44 years old at the time the movie was filmed yet no one ever seems to realize he is a relatively young man until thay are told his actual age at the time of the filming.😮😊
This is like watching 'Somebody Show Phil A Movie' -- PS: The pills the old priest is taking are nitroglycerin tablets, placed under the tongue to help with chest pain related to heart ailments.
You asked if Max Von Sydow was still alive. He just died recently at age 90. He was relatively young when he did this movie. Great makeup job to look old 😉
First time viewing your channel. Here are a few tidbits you may (or may not) know. Father Merrin, played terrifically by Max von Sydow, was in his early 40s when he played this part! You were guessing at what he was taking; it was nitroglycerin for his heart problems. The demon didn't kill him; his heart failed. The demon's name is Pazuzu and Father Merrin had done battle with it before in Africa. If you will recall, the priests said "...and it damned near killed him." The demon's attacks in the novel were way more vicious. It especially targeted Karl (the butler) because he was a Holocaust survivor. It targeted (and was ruthless) against Father Karras constantly attacking his sexuality. In the infamous crucifix scene, Ellen Burstyn suffered major back injuries. When she was knocked across the room, she had wires attached to her back. She was pulled too hard and that scream she emits is REAL. I believe shooting had to shut down for a while. Hope you enjoyed the movie. You also need to watch Exorcist III - Legion. Almost as good as the first one.
Linda Blair also got permanent back problems from her flopping on the bed scene. Part of the harness used to create the back and forth flopping breaks while filming throwing the alignment of her spine off. Remember she was 13 and still developing. She's said recently that she's had problems ever since.
You were thinking of Parkinson's, but he was taking nitroglycerin for chest pain. Trust me, anyone who had a parent with angina recognizes those tiny white pills. Treatment for a symptom of bad heart disease. I didn't get to see this until I was around 14, on HBO. But I saw Exorcist II: The Heretic in a theater. Your impression of Dr. Sheldon Cooper rapping was unsettling. My favorites are this, Halloween II (1981), and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. There was no such thing as voice mail yet, and telephone answering machines were just starting to appear. In 1973, people fainted, vomited, had heart problems, stormed out of the theater, ambulances were called. Damien died a hero. He invited the demon in then killed himself to protect Regan, taking the demon with him. A martyr's sacrifice. I disagree with you about the makeup. I think it still holds up. The only CGI in the entire movie is where they erased the wires for the spider-walk down the stairs, added to the extended cut in 2000.

I'm getting a kick out of watching the reactions to the end of the movie. I find it interesting that most people say the same thing when Damien jumps on Regan and goes to town, "But she's still a little girl!" After all that havoc, they still see her as innocent. I love that and wish we could all extend that grace to one another.
I saw the exorcist in the theater when I was a child in the 70's and it scared the living hell out of me it was ground breaking for sure I was 5 years old when this came out in 73 my mom took me to see it
If you’re going to do a movie review, watch the actual film, leave the cat alone - and then you wouldn’t have to apologise for missing lines. You’re a bad reviewer anyway - I stopped watching when you did the rap over the opening music.
The bed rose very clumsily at first when the stage hands pulled on ropes to raise it. Then the effects director counter-weighted the bed, so it would “want” to rise, and the men had to pull down to prevent it being pulled up by the weights. The result was a bed that truly seemed to float like a feather, ethereally, weightlessly. A magical practical effect.
THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!!
To make Regan's room cold enough so the actor's breath would be visible, four industrial air conditioners were used to bring the temperature on set down as low as 40 degrees below zero .
When I was stationed in Europe, I learned that monks drink beer regularly and many monastery’s even operate breweries and raise money by selling it. It’s been going on for centuries. Being raised in America, I never realized this.
Wine *is* one of the basic Communion sacraments. I've never understood how alcohol could be considered a sin by Christian folk. The temperance movements always seem foolishly misguided to me anyway, but for Christians it seems downright hypocritical.
Especially where horror movies are concerned CGI has cheapened the genre. Assuming that older movies are not as good as today's is a serious stupidity. Watch this again without the snide remarks young man.
Parents decided to forgo a babysitter... my younger brother and I joined them for a drive-in movie experience. Yes, it was the year of it's original release.
My aunt and my mom were 14 and 12 when this came out, and it was playing at their small-town movie theater that only had 2 screens. They, along with 2 of their friends, all lied to their parents about which movie they were going to see, and the four kids walked to the theater so excited about how rebellious they were being sneaking into a “scary movie”… then they all walked out of the theater at the end completely scarred for life 😂 they said that they learned their lesson the hard way!
This movie completely freaked me out when I first saw it! I was literally shocked. And I was raised catholic so you know; they make us terrified of the devil and demons of course. But that’s when you’re raised to believe in that. I have to say that I loved that you needed your cat to give you some kind of comfort. You are so cute! Sorry had to say it. Thank you for your reaction!!🥰⭐️🙌🏼
You mentioned after Karras sacrifices himself to save the little girl that you were not going to cry even though it’s clear that you weld up from your stunned reaction. No worries, many cry during that scene. I certainly did when I first saw the rerelease on the big screen in 2000.
As a non religious person, I’m surprised there was debate between Christian’s about whether this portrayed Christians well when it came out: the priests are very clearly in this movie the selfless heroes who confronted evil and won, sacrificing themselves in the process.
@@TrequartistaFM Unlike the film "Blues Brothers", which the Vatican apparently revered in the early 1980s, *_The Exorcist_* was strongly disapproved by the Catholic Church. The debate was thus characterized by a general aversion to the film on the part of many Catholics loyal to Rome. However, this film was used as a template for real (!) exorcisms. Maybe by catholics. Greetings.
I saw this when I was 16 at the drive in.... the drive in had to be the scariest place to see it..... also there were tons of rumors about how the film was haunted..... that the demon that appeared on the screen wasn't filmed........they really made it scarier then it is now, nobody had heard of the behind the scenes etc...... this version didn't play tubular bells .. the association make the tune scary.... being 16 I went to bed at night for weeks waiting for my bed to start jumping...... it is truly the scariest movie ever made.....
You need to behave like a grownup. I had to stop this video during the doofy impromptu rap (the scene featuring Chris MacNeil's stroll on Halloween afternoon, while the _Tubular Bells_ song is heard on the soundtrack). Not going to waste my time on this nonsense. You obviously have zero patience for quality cinema. A movie like this, a marvelous thriller and an Oscar contender, will be wasted on someone who acts like he's twelve while watching it.
It was scary to me as a child, but as I got older & wiser, I found what happened on set to be more interesting than a movie meant to scare. Pazuzu was used as the antagonist in the movie. But in reality is an an ancient Deity of Mesopotamia, what is now Iraq, as shown in the movie. Pazuzu is the personification of the SouthWestern Wind. He is considered destructive & dangerous, but also a protector. During filming a bird flew into the circuit box, catching itself & the set on fire burning it all down, except for Regans bedroom, it was untouched ... 9 people associated with the film died before its release. 9 is a sacred number in Chaldean numerology, the Chaldean Empire was centered in Babylon, which was in Mesopotamia or now Iraq ... People need to be more cautious about what they dabble with ...
Nice job, Jon! You made it though one of my favorite horror classics. The fact that this film still holds up to this day says something about the quality of the film, the casting, the setting, all of it. Amityville is another great classic horror flick to check out. There are 2 versions though. I personally like the original. Happy watching! 🎃
1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱 2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣 3. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for our benefit. 5. Father Merrin and the demon/Pazuzu had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 6. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually broke her coccyx when the demon makes her hard fall. 7. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 8. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 9 Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith. 10. RIP Willian Freidkin😇
The reason most people rewatch The Exorcist again year after year is that they will never experience a real exorcism, but they will experience the death of one or both of their parents. The Karras side of the story is the one that those people relate to and why they'll watch the Exorcist over and over again like "The Seventh Seal". The exorcism is just a metaphor for the guilt that Karras, and most people, experience from the death of a parent. That makes The Exorcist more than just a horror movie, it's also one of the few outstanding existential films in the history of cinema.
This is exactly how this film won me over. My father was in hospice when this was playing as a Midnight Movie in a theater and it completely changed how I viewed the film versus previous watches.
Favorite spiritual thriller "The Rite" with Anthony Hopkins Sci-fi "Alien" with Sigourney Weaver Slasher "Halloween" with Jamie Lee Curtis Psychological thriller "6TH Sense" with Bruce Willis
Actually the Catholic Church still has a small group of men that are trained exorcists, only called on when strict requirements are all met. When all other options are exhausted, one is summoned.
If you aren't a believer this movie is a joke, much like you treated it. If you are a believer and in touch with the spiritual reality, the evil is authentically portrayed and is scary. Hence, the 70s people made it number one on the list of horror movies
Merrin died of heart failure. Those were nitroglycerin pills he was downing like tic tacs. The movie was more suspense than actual horror. Those medical test scenes were really true to life. CAT scans and MRIs had years to go before they became standard. Even Ultrasounds were not invented yet. The attack in a possession are always to upset the witnesses. The Host is never hurt too much. If the Host was killed, and there is no WILLING host, it goes straight to Abaddon. This was what happened. That
Subscribed. Love how you totally immersed yourself once it kicked in to the exorcism scene. Brilliantly directed and and acted. The Exorcist is so much more than just a horror film. It is not only a horror film but rather a film that depicted horrific events. It is uneasy suspense with a buildup that emotionally explodes. Its great story telling with incredible raw performances by all. It's horror/drama that is serious, relentless, and powerful. It's about doubt, faith, guilt, sacrifice, desperation, love, redemption, heartbreaking loss and science versus the human condition. A mother who has no religious beliefs, desperately seeks help from a guilt ridden priest who has lost his faith. The movie won the Oscar for best screenplay for good reasons.
Thanks, Jonathan! Thanks, Ash! 😱 You wondered if *Max* *von* *Sydow* was still alive. He died 3 years ago at age 90. You also saw him as 'Lor San Tekka' in THE FORCE AWAKENS (2015). I don't call this kind of movie "slow", I think of it as deliberately-pace. You might also appreciate SORCERER (1977), also directed by Friedkin. It's not supernatural as the title may suggest. It's about some criminals hiding out in Latin America who get a chance at redemption by undertaking a harrowing mission. It's as well-directed as this one... with some remarkable action scenes, too. #PopcornRoulette #WilliamFriedkin #TheExorcist
This was not good. The reaction, not the movie. I do see a good number of bad comments on your review. All I can say to you is look at what others have said, watch your reaction and you can work on being better at this. Try to be more invested and “watch and listen” to the story. Perhaps this line of work is not for you.
"Emperor Palpatine?!" Hahaha I've seen this film so many times and never even made that connection before, but it's so right! Also I never picked up on the lesion/Legion homonym-ish placement, good catch. "Somehow, the horse-drawn carriage came back."
You don’t show her seeing the demon image in the first exam, you hack up the first frightening scene of her being thrashed around in her bed so you don’t hear the demon voice come through her, you watch the directors cut but you inexplicably edit out the news of Burke’s death and the spider walk. Dude, really?
Old voicemails? Answering machines were barely a thing then. LOL. Liked ur reaction. I grew up very religious myself. This terrified me and gave me nightmares for years. Not sure I ever fully recovered. LOL. New to your channel. I'm a fan now. 🙂
There were three books everyone was reading in the early 70s, The Godfather, JAWS and this. The movies made from these the books could have easily been Hollywood crap. They weren't.
I live for this movie reaction. Everyone is so flippant and makes funny comments at first. Then everyone's demeanor changes.
Glorious, isn't it? 🤣
Everybody expects an outdated flick with hysterical acting.

I came to say the same thing. 😅Unwatchable. Got 5 mins in and shut it off.
So you’d prefer someone to sit there blankly without providing commentary?
Looks like your in the minority with your ‘unbearable’ analysis..

It’s Parkinson’s that makes you shake not Alzheimer’s that makes you lose your memory
The image that Fr. Merrin sees in the desert is the demon that is possessing Regan. It's name is Pazuzu, king of the evil spirits of the air.
I saw the exorcist in the theater when I was a child in the 70's and it scared the living hell out of me it was ground breaking for sure I was 5 years old when this came out in 73 my mom took me to see it
He’s taking nitro for a bad heart.
Georgetown is not in the northeast. It's outside of Washington D.C. I think that is considered the mid-atlantic area.
How are you paying attention to the film when your taking about something supernatural you experienced save it for after the film
Wasnt done with ropes but a fulcrum and lever
Good to see someone watching the classics in comfort rather than sat at a desk on an office chair 2 feet away from a monitor
Again the neck twisting was an elusion
If not where did the body of. Karras mother come from?
THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!! THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU!!
To make Regan's room cold enough so the actor's breath would be visible, four industrial air conditioners were used to bring the temperature on set down as low as 40 degrees below zero .
Excellent film and performances.
Bro,you did better than I did in 1979,for my first viewing. I was 9, and had my thumbs in my ears and my palms over my eyes.
That’s not Peter Faulk, from Columbo/The Princess Bride.
If you're frightened, tonight I'll sleep with you, man...
Lots of subliminal messaging in this film. Fyi, at 27:06 turn the picture upside down and you’ll see what Regan really drew
EGYPT, IRAN, AFGHANISTAN...LOL NON OF THE ABOVE. XD
Especially where horror movies are concerned CGI has cheapened the genre. Assuming that older movies are not as good as today's is a serious stupidity. Watch this again without the snide remarks young man.
Sorry. Can't take the nin- stop talking.
Parents decided to forgo a babysitter... my younger brother and I joined them for a drive-in movie experience. Yes, it was the year of it's original release.
drinks , smokes , goes to bars ! the average catholic priest !
unbearable reaction.. You talk too much.
My aunt and my mom were 14 and 12 when this came out, and it was playing at their small-town movie theater that only had 2 screens. They, along with 2 of their friends, all lied to their parents about which movie they were going to see, and the four kids walked to the theater so excited about how rebellious they were being sneaking into a “scary movie”… then they all walked out of the theater at the end completely scarred for life 😂 they said that they learned their lesson the hard way!
you wouldn't believe how hard it was to get voicemails in 1973
This movie completely freaked me out when I first saw it!
The priest takes nitroglycerin for angina.
You should wait till the end for your reaction
Aye, you're a cocky one, ain't ya? 😹
Nice job, Jon! You made it though one of my favorite horror classics. The fact that this film still holds up to this day says something about the quality of the film, the casting, the setting, all of it. Amityville is another great classic horror flick to check out. There are 2 versions though. I personally like the original. Happy watching! 🎃
the amazing thing about this movie is that Lina Blair a child actor did all her own acting except for the cut where she hacks at her privates.
33:35 He died 2 years ago. Going by his age in this film he lived until 127.
1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱
2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣
Jonathan is so damn funny I love him!
He is! Such a fun reaction
Johnathan’s the best!
Why did this reactor keep calling him Damon? His name is Damian. lol
Favorite spiritual thriller "The Rite" with Anthony Hopkins
Sci-fi
"Alien" with Sigourney Weaver
Slasher "Halloween" with Jamie Lee Curtis
Psychological thriller
"6TH Sense" with Bruce Willis
I love black cats…I have some as well!
Actually the Catholic Church still has a small group of men that are trained exorcists, only called on when strict requirements are all met. When all other options are exhausted, one is summoned.
The original Amityville Horror will definitely give you the creeps.
bad heart , he took nitroglycerine .
I still think the makeup stands up today. It’s her face that is scary and no movie even comes close. It’s all so fake now.
If you aren't a believer this movie is a joke, much like you treated it. If you are a believer and in touch with the spiritual reality, the evil is authentically portrayed and is scary. Hence, the 70s people made it number one on the list of horror movies
Congratulations! You are the one millionth reactor I've had to tell that those were heart pills! 😈
A deleter, huh? Good lord, so easily bruised.
That
Fr. Merrin takes nitroglycerin pills for a heart condition.
I enjoyed some of this reaction, but dude stop trying to compete with the movie for attention, and as for your vocal soundtrack....could do without!
A black cat.. with a scary movie?...you know that's worse!
Please react to another masterpiece. Director Ridley Scott's first film Alien its a 1979 movie. Pleaseeeeeeeee❤❤❤
Man, this reaction is GOOD.. 😄🌺 Watching from Assam, India.
"Emperor Palpatine?!" Hahaha I've seen this film so many times and never even made that connection before, but it's so right! Also I never picked up on the lesion/Legion homonym-ish placement, good catch.
"Somehow, the horse-drawn carriage came back."
Fantastic viewing. Interesting and fun reactions. 😁👍🏼
You don’t show her seeing the demon image in the first exam, you hack up the first frightening scene of her being thrashed around in her bed so you don’t hear the demon voice come through her, you watch the directors cut but you inexplicably edit out the news of Burke’s death and the spider walk. Dude, really?
Ahhh…you didn’t show us your reaction to the spider-walk down the stairs.
Old voicemails? Answering machines were barely a thing then. LOL. Liked ur reaction. I grew up very religious myself. This terrified me and gave me nightmares for years. Not sure I ever fully recovered. LOL. New to your channel. I'm a fan now. 🙂
Certain parts felt slow because they were slow and had been edited out in the theatrical cut. The original flows better and is much more compelling.
There were three books everyone was reading in the early 70s, The Godfather, JAWS and this. The movies made from these the books could have easily been Hollywood crap. They weren't.
