    I've been a firefighter, paramedic, and flight paramedic for 20 years, and have used Panasonic Toughbooks for 11 of those, in their various models. Trust me when I say they are more than tough. Not meant for gaming of course, but I've used them on the ground, not only for vehicle mapping and dispatch programs, but for PCR's and importing data like cardiac monitoring and vital signs during medivacs in Alberta and BC, when ambient outdoor temps are -50C.... it goes outside to inside and back out without condensation issues. The LCD does slow to a crawl around -25C, but it's still useable! I've dropped them out of airplanes onto the tarmac, and taken them in open air choppers from 200ft above sea level, to the top of a mountain (2800m). No change in function with altitude, and the keyboard and screen are resistant to heavy sleet (never put your laptop down when in heavy snow....). There are limits, but these things take a lot of abuse over thousands of hours of heavy use and daily jarring / bumping. Amazing product in my experience! #toughbook

    back in the late 90's-very early 2000's, an uncle of mine used to love a tough laptop because of the type of work he did. he was climbing alot of telephone poles and it was great to have a tough laptop so that you could just clip it to belt while on a pole or just not have to worry about hammer or other tools causing damage.... if there wasnt a market, they wouldnt have sold so many of them. lol.. but yeah, i would love to have a modern laptop that is tough af. all the ones now, crack just setting it down. lol.

    Uhhhh, it's pretty tough. A similar ruggedized laptop was tested by my army infantry unit a while back, it can withstand getting ran over, Dropped (from 4 story scaffolding), "Don't ask", short-term fire from Tash pit, buried in mud, sand storms, left on ground while raining, being left on the hood of a humvee in 115 degree heat and forgotten about for a day, and finally pounding on the keyboard.

  • @glencouls

    Fun video, I don't think the toughbook was designed to be hit with a hammer. It was however designed to to be ip65 water jet resistant, and 6' drop resistant. It was not designed to play games, it was designed to sit in patrol cars, firetrucks, and utility vehicles. Performance increases with installation of an SSD. That port on the bottom was for a vehicle dock, or desktop docking station/ port replicator. It interacts much better with software as a service or SaaS, business applications.

    I'm not sure about your particular model but these laptops have a hidden feature which is a touch screen. They often come with dial up modems built in as well. The BIOS has some crazy settings in it too that you don't see anywhere else. One thing I cant stand on them though are the recessed USB ports that make plugging in most USB sticks nearly impossible.

    These got a lot of use in engineering and construction, there was a more metallic version with a tougher screen back.
    Nice kit and really needed for when some idiot drops it off a building, runs over it, or accidentally leaves it near welding robots or inside an electron beam lab.
    Don't think it would survive the room sized microwave, we were told if the red light flashes to get out of the room before the automatic door closes.
    There were Army laptops that probably put even this to shame though.

      I friggin' love those laptops. Had an x220T (Tablet convertible) that got taken out in a flood. Would've survived that too if my wife had told me that it got soaked, so if I'd waited for it to dry out before turning it on it would've been fine. So sad, because it has the BEST keyboard on a laptop. Only reason I didn't replace it is because of the weight. A little too heavy to use it as a tablet without starting to feel like a brick.

  • @cidkplas
    @cidkplas 5 років тому

    We had lots of them in the military, and they can take really serious beatings. I mean they handle heat and cold like its nothing, they take hits or get dropped, and still work fine. Screen resolution and keyboard are horrendous, but those laptops are the most reliable ones we got. We had some CF28, CF29, CF30, CF-U1 and CF19, and never got disapointed. If you dont run after huge performance, they are beasts in their domain.

    I do excavating and hauling so I'm always around heavy equipment. Many laptops and cellphones have met their demise while being used at work. One bit of "dead tech" that I really, really miss is the 2-Way Radios by Nextel. Those things were nearly indestructible! My cellphones are usually cracked within 2 months of me getting them. I crushed my Samsung Note 10+ 5G with one of the track-hoes and the insurance company didn't have any in-stock that they could send me, so I got to upgrade to the Samsung Note 20 Ultra..Yeah, I cracked it within the first month of me having it. I say all that because I'd love to have a genuinely tough laptop and phone, but without any compromises.

Of course it's going to break if you actually go for a hit with any force applied at all, like I'm willing to bet that, even if someone made a metal alloy armored laptop, you can still break it with a hammer when you intend to do so.
