It's crazy how there's really truly not much here. As amazing as this album is, I expected there to be like 60 tracks per song. These guys are absolute masters at making things sound perfect out of the gate and doing more with less. This song has such an expansive sound (as does the whole album), but it's done so simply and succinctly. I say again, masters. Great video!!
Imagine unboxing raw tracks for a Devin Townsend song, his overview of Supercrush! was already reaching enormous number of tracks, and some newer albums could even exceed that number!
Listening to all of these raw tracks, especially in the modern metalcore/ djent scene makes it even clearer that a great part of the work is made by clean, tight, flawlessly recorded tracks. Great lesson: there’s no way to build great stuff without solid foundations. It makes you appreciated even more all these talented musicians. Thanks for these great content!
There's a similar lead type of thing going on in Absolomb as well. They quad track each guitar and then also double the lead guitar melodies with a synth
Well all of the guys have their individual strengths, Misha did say that he learned alot from watching Nolly. Mind you Misha was putting out really quality stuff back in his Pod XT days on soundclick - yet after all these years he learned alot and also improved alot.
I've wanted this class for so long, as Nolly and Periphery have been the reason why I've gotten into engineering and mixing! Now that I bought it (and yes I spent the entire day watching all 8 hours straight) I'm so glad I did. Nolly is one of a kind when it comes to his application of scientific knowledge combined with a large sense of vibe and "casualness."
I want to take the opportunity to say periphery is literally the band that got me into audio. that was back in 2013 when my friend introduced me to P2 and I was blown away at the intricacies of the album. I was blown away by the vocals. It's now 2018 and i'm actually currently in school getting my cert for audio engineering. I can't thank these guys any more for just existing. They raise the bar so high for music.
This session of NTM really brought my mixes to the next level; I'm so much happier with the results I'm getting now because of what I learned from Nolly!
This is the product of really great instruments, a great engineer and extremely good players. I would say the drums make this track. Without matt halpern Periphery would not exist. Great Job Eyal ! keep em coming
God, that smashed room track is so tasty. I always feel like compressing the hell out of a drum room mic or distorting a vocal is like the audio equivalent of scratching an itch or crushing an empty can or something - just weirdly satisfying on a visceral level :D
JEEEEEEEZ If those drum tracks are completely raw, i am impressed as shit. Holy hell man thats one good sounding kick And those harmonies are just pure love
I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that your main instrument is drums. Not sure what would possibly give that away. I kid, of course. I think it's cool to see someone get so excited about drum sound, as I don't see it very often. I knew there were lots of layers in their stuff, but hearing it all by itself is too cool. Hopefully some day I'll get my hands on these multitracks
Actually Eyal started out on piano (his father is a symphony conductor) and played guitar in his band Daath- he’s just a fan of anything that’s played this well!
You have the best quality of music here ! From the production to the performance till to the URM Academy.... Ouf ! You are so blessed guys ! I don't know what I can't do to reach there !
watching how Misha approached guitar tracking, they are really tight even without note-by-note editing basis, though i still think they kinda did for more complex section (also Nolly talking about trying to sound as close to the MIDI track as possible, obviously with added flair).
URM Academy damn too bad I spent my check on a guitar this pay period. Oh well. Guess I’ll just sign up like a normal person when I get paid next... lol.
I just need the guitars and bass to have no distortion and no vst, that would really be an unboxing.. this would work on things already worked, it makes no sense anyway good try hehe
God Halpern's kit sounds incredible
I strongly agree, nolly is one of a kind genius when it comes to drum recording!
Ive used the Getgood drums sample pack that Nolly and Matt made...they are a game changer.
@@TheMadcow1408 Agree. I am using it too :) but I think that the new P4 kit is even better!
@@TheMadcow1408are there pre AND post samples/presets? I haven't really learned this ins and outs of drum processing yet
Periphery is the result of a bunch of geniuses getting together to make music. Like...my god. Flawless recording.
Facts!

I thought exactly the same thing, specially in vocals and FX I thought there would be much more! impressive...

I like how the guitar lead and synth have incredibly similar tones. I think that's what keeps them largely glued together.
There's a similar lead type of thing going on in Absolomb as well. They quad track each guitar and then also double the lead guitar melodies with a synth
It's so nice to hear well produced stems... they sound huge even without mastering
Having Nolly in the band was overpowered as hell. Having an engineer dial in stuff is basically cheating in the mixing game
Well all of the guys have their individual strengths, Misha did say that he learned alot from watching Nolly. Mind you Misha was putting out really quality stuff back in his Pod XT days on soundclick - yet after all these years he learned alot and also improved alot.
Spencer's soloed harmonies with the arpeggio's gives me goose bumps like crazy. These guys are all so good.
These guys are damm legends. What a recording. My god
I love hearing Eyal getting all giddy when unboxing well-recorded tracks.

Appreciate the support Luke! Glad to have you as a member! :)

Well said!
I remember Nolly saying the mono slam room mic was just for talk back :D
That was an old trick that people who used SSL consoles used back in the day. Phil Collins’ drums from his first solo record used that trick.

couldn't have said it any better

Periphery is fucking great. It's also great that they all take the time to get the tracks to sound right before the actual mixing.
Fingers crossed we get a song off the new album on NTM when it drops. ;)
Yes lets get Nolly on again for NTM! Or even for another one of his mixes like something from Holy Hell would be great
Best mixed and sounding Album to Date, Nolly has set a new Reference in modern Metal Music Production
16:12 lil wayne guest solo
I'd love to hear an unboxing for Periphery II's Masamune. There must be so much layering in those vocals and at the end in that rhythm guitar
What a powerful set of tracks. Great unboxing.
I believe Nolly was also the recording engineer on the drums.
of course, i think him and Matt had the perfect chemistry
Everyone in Periphery (or Pure Riffery) is so ******* good at what they do. And Nolly as well, of course!

Goddamn, those guitars sound amazing

DUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Periphery = Magic
Man, I didn't want that the video ended... 😞
damn, that high harmony on 'tomorrow'
"YES"
Came here for the drums, didnt disappoint..
what a great song prayer position is :)
YAAAAAAAAASSSSS
13:25 if anyone wants to skip to just the guitars
rhytm guitars only double track left and right? i thought it was quad tracked???
There is a tutorial by Misha where he says, he records only twice afaik
mixed by the one and Nolly
16:44 synth tone reference
U in a hall?
oh Nolly you son of a witch
its like the 6th time im watching this.
Are those vocals printed with fx?
13:18 CHECK!
Yes🧟♂️📍
19:35 balls
Bro why would you wanna use samples for those drums? Thats a 2500$ snare played by Matt Halpern. Every hit already sounds like a sample.
These raw mixes sound better than their overproduced masters
I just need the guitars and bass to have no distortion and no vst,

anyway good try hehe
this is not raw, like most of the urm stuff, it is pre-processed.
Only the vocals
