  • Hello Everyone, Hellifield Station is a wonderful relic of the Victorian age. It was built by the Midland Railway and was once a busy junction with passenger trains going as far afield as London and Scotland. There were extensive freight operations including engine sheds, a goods yard and turntable. Sadly, the decline began when the line from Blackburn had its local passenger services withdrawn from September 1962 while the adjacent locomotive sheds closed the following year. In April 1977 the main station building was designated as a Grade 2 listed building and major refurbishment was undertaken during the late 1980’s and again in 2013. Today, the station buildings contain a vast array of railway memorabilia and there is also a family run cafe, Shed 24, named after the last engine shed allocated to Hellifield in the late 1960’s. The station also has a bespoke holiday let, the Yorkshire Sleeper. There are regular services from the station to destinations including Leeds, Skipton, Carlisle, Lancaster, and Morecambe. A water column has also been installed to allow steam charter trains to stop for servicing. The station has the potential to become a major railway heritage attraction but I guess the issue will always come down to finding appropriate financial investment. I hope you enjoy the video.

My childhood was spent playing on the sidings, in the sheds etc in the 50s / 60s. Lived on midland terrace, My father was a train driver. I even climbed up in to the cab with him and the fireman. Oh! Happy days 😊

If possible, whenever I visit the UK, I always enjoy a ride on (pilgrimage to) the S&C and Hellifield is a favourite of mine (as is its fireman’s breakfast!). Your video was much enjoyed, bringing back memories of a station I first encountered in 1966. Thanks for posting. 👍

Great video, Thanks. I was there in 2022 doing research for a book I'm publishing which includes Hellifield Station.

Thank you. On the day of my visit there was a broken down train further along the S&C line which limited the number of trains passing through Hellifield. However, the station contains a wealth of railway memorabilia and history which more than made up for the lack of trains on the day. Best Wishes.

The Blackburn to Hellifield stretch suggested actually extended from Chatburn which was the limit of the line up to then,up to Hellifield, incorporating stations at Rimington,Gisburn and Newsholme.

Thank you Anthony, glad you enjoyed the video. The station offers so much for railway enthusiasts and I do like your suggestion about the potential for using the existing engine sheds as a heritage centre for steam & diesel loco’s. Best Wishes.

Time for the Skipton side Bay Platform to be reopened, this would open the Ribble Valley and allow Lancashire and East Lancashire Stations to be connected to the Settle Carlisle and Skipton for Leeds

@@folksinger2100 Thank you. Yes, the station is just a shadow of its former self and there would be great potential by opening up these bay platforms. Best Wishes.

The picture of the Station Staff at 1:30: Do you have a date for it? My great grandfather Charles Downham was at Hellifield until 1917, before becoming signalman at Clitheroe, Eshton Terrace till he retired in the 1940s.

Hi, From the records I made during the recording of this video the photograph at 1.30 features Midland Railway staff at Hellifield Station in 1895 which was 15 years after the new station opened. I hope this helps.

The English stations are all Crystal Palace style, don't you think?

Hi, Yes I agree. There are a number of UK Railway Stations with beautifully designed glass canopies.
