Lea's very smart. At a very young age she new the accent would somehow help her land the role in a UK production. Remember she auditioned with this accent and she pulled it off and they chose her among thousands of aspirants in a worldwide search for Kim. In London, she won the Sir Laurence Olivier Award and would probably have had a brilliant career at West End but the creators of Miss Saigon new she was so talented that they had to bring her to NY as well for the Broadway production of the show where she later won a Tony. She also helped pave the way for other Asians to be considered for non-Asian parts having won critical acclaim as Eponine and later as Fantine in Les Miserables. She landed the role because of her voice and interpretation. During her audition she used her natural accent which is American since she was trained by Repertory Philippines with theater artists using the American accent. Plus, her mother trained her to use English as her first language in the Philippines even though the mother, Ligaya, cannot speak English with the native-like accent of Lea. She used the British accent in this interview because she wanted to blend in since she can switch accents having the ear for it just like some artists who also have the ear for different accents.

@@eduardochavacano Nope it was not a very thick British accent. However, when she was interviewed in London she switched to a British accent. Lea Salonga is a Filipino GenXer like me and I actually know her family history (today's generation thought she came from a rich family because of her English fluency, but they did not know her struggles as the daughter of a man who already had another family then). My sis was a big fan of Lea who was not appreciated by our fellow GenXers because she was seen as snooty then just like most of her fellow artists in Repertory Philippines for staging Western plays and musicals. She actually admitted it in an interview because many Filipinos then criticized her for using the British accent when in the Philippines everyone knew her accent was and still is American since the Philippines was colonized by Americans. My sister became a journalist and was able to interview Lea Salonga in person.

Lea's greatest talent is her Diction! She is Asian but she commands the English language better than the average native speaker of English. Anyone can hit the high notes. But only Lea can make it sound like she is just Talking and with the charm of a western accent.
There are numerous countries in Asia where in there are fluent English speakers with amazing grammar. I mean, I'm a Filipino and I'm in 8th grade and I'm completely fluent in English ever since I was in 3rd grade. "When in Rome (do as the Romans do)" that's basically what Lea Salonga-Chien did on this interview. Same thing with her Christmas video message when she was doing "Miss Saigon" in London. Lea, UNlike most of the artist in the Philippines, has constantly set her foot on the ground and never fails to remember her roots. Lea has remained true to herself and never cease to make all Filipinos in the world prouder.
The host is really nice tho. I can imagine that Asians or pocs weren’t very welcome in the UK back then. Good on him for being kind and doing his best to encourage Lea (not that she needs it, love her confidence!)
The 1st time I saw lea on stage was in Araneta colleseum during the sanreo production in 1982 I was 8 and she was 10 I think. Shes very talented and wity.
Her mannerism never changed.. The way she talks and how she emphasizes words with hand gestures.. No matter where she is.. Be it Philippines or any other country, Lea is still Lea.. She just copes with environment so naturally.. She knows what to to do at a young age! Wow.. I look up to her a lot
If there's anything I realized from this interview...it's how smart she answered all of his questions, and how she managed to be humble but truthful at the same time.
Ergh, Filipinos are versatile just like that. When I'm in Wellington, I speak with a slight Kiwi accent. When I'm in the Philippines, I speak with an American accent. It's just one of those things... :)
I agree. It's an adaptation thing. I live in the U.S. and I'm Filipino and I've friends from other countries who after spending years here drop their accent when they speak English and don't realize it. When you assimilate into another culture, you tend to pick up linguistics and dialects through social interaction. For an outsider it can be surprising but it has a charming appeal to it to shock people. LOL.
@@queenofswords4499 Many OFWs cannot lose their provincial accents despite being abroad for a long time. It is a talent to use different accents since even Western artists do not have this ear for accents so not all can do different accents unlike Gary Oldman or Daniel Day Lewis. Anyone watching this video in August 2019? 😍 Sobrang ganda at witty ni Ms. Lea dito. No doubt who is she now. Amazing.
I love her accent!! 😃😃
lea's smile reminds me soooo much of ylona from pbb now wow

It’s 2019😄, I love Lea❤️She’s a gift to the Filipinos. I will never get tired of watching her. Oozing with talents and her brother too, Gerard Salonga
The host is really nice tho. I can imagine that Asians or pocs weren’t very welcome in the UK back then. Good on him for being kind and doing his best to encourage Lea (not that she needs it, love her confidence!)
Beautiful Lea. 2019 and watching this❤️
Kung diko lang kilala si Lea Salonga, pagkakamalan ko talaga syang foreigner haha graveee starstruck pa rin ako sakanya 😍

Goosebumps and Chills! Amazing Performance indeed Ms. Lea Salonga. Philippines Pride!
🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
WOW! Lea Salongga got BARS when she speaks! haha. Talks so fast, with the UK accent, and the voice is fire
I lover her accent and her way of speaking tho
2021 anyone here? I love how she express herself with those hands and facial expressions how she always does until today.
I was born this year. 1989 😲 she is really amazing back then and now. Wow!
I think she's a VERY TALENTED performer who speaks VERY GOOD English and she does the Philippines proud!
LOL.
Essen Vicente btw the british accent is kinda weird...just speak the way you speak....
Yuni Aniceto yeah well she did stay in London for quite a while. sometimes you just adapt to the accent 😊
@@queenofswords4499 Many OFWs cannot lose their provincial accents despite being abroad for a long time. It is a talent to use different accents since even Western artists do not have this ear for accents so not all can do different accents unlike Gary Oldman or Daniel Day Lewis. Lea has the same innate talent.
I worked for the British embassy, working in an environment were most of your co workers are British, I never felt the need to change my accent. It felt weird speaking in an accent I wasn't used to.
Well to each their own, no hate.
Every time I have a job interview I watch this video first so I can copy the accent and fluency. hehe Thanks Lea :)
Guztong guzto ko tlga to c Ms.Lea Salonga panuorin...lalo na sa the voice ito ung magaling na judges pagdating sa mga kanta..
