- Dr Rhys Jones helps Jan and Graham Garen, proprietors of the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary at Caehopkin near Swansea, on an international mission to rescue Billy, a former circus chimpanzee in captivity in Bulgaria. Billy hasn't seen another chimp for fifteen years and, once he has reached his new home, it's a delicate task to ensure he integrates smoothly with the more settled apes. His eventual bonding with new pal Bimbo is heartwarming to see.
From the BBC series "Rhys To The Rescue".

I did not expect this story to affect me the way it has. What a heartwarming and joyous conclusion to what has, before now, been a tragic life. Billy is a beautiful old soul, and I have no idea how he has been able to remain so gentle, considering his past treatment. I am so glad he now has a safe home and friends to play and hold onto. My thanks to everyone who made his salvation and sanctuary possible.
It's nice to see that even after all that neglect and mistreatment the chimp still has faith in humans
The bond Billy had with humans is so awesome, and even though he belongs with the other chimps, I believe he will have that bond with humans, including the reassurance he needs from the human care takers from time to time.
Well I mean a sad part is that he probably has that bond with humans because he spent so much of his life at the circus:(which god only knows what horror he saw, most humans wouldn’t want to work in the circus.
If only all mistreated animals, including those who have had horrible experiments performed on them, be cared for and loved with dignity, love and respect! Thank you! ❤️🌺🌷💕
billy has to be the kindest most adorable chimp i have ever seen.
Great video. How do you drive an adult chimpanzee 2000 miles back to the sanctuary? I can't imagine the logistics of that trip.
I love at the end how he throws his legs up to get up, that's exactly how I get up.
Wow so small..I just watched Chimp Haven..such a difference.. I hope you had the opportunity to expand your sanctuary in the meantime. Its now 5 years later.
Its wonderful that these chimpanzees are rescued from horrible circumstances. The conditions of their care must have been something greatly considered, along with the enormous expense of establishing and running a sanctuary. But the environment you've put the chimpanzees is very cold during winter; one that seems difficult for them to cope with; and alien to their natural tropical environment. There doesn't seem to be respite from the cold other than some blankets they have learned to wrap themselves in. (I haven't seen any videos/view of them having access to any indoor warmed enclosures.) The sanctuary may be protective in some regards but cruel in other ways. (Aware this video is 10 years old and many things may have changed) Your response likely to this: donations speak louder than my words.
Sanctuary? Looks like a small prison to me.
Such a sweetheart
So from one shit hole to another. Great
God is awesome. The love these animals have proves it.
You're welcome, Max. I entirely agree with everything you say.
This is one of the worst sanctuaries I have seen, they are completely enclosed in metal bars.
its still cleaner then the alley your drug addicted mom lives in.....and BTW..cant you buy your old mom some teeth?
that meth she smokes not good for teeth.....and let her keep the 3 dollars she gets for servicing the homeless....you dont need it
@@jadezee6316 Man have you been stalking this guys mom? You sure know a lot about her. You know that birds of a feather, flock together.
He’s not in solitary confinement anymore.
I'm no expert but surely by giving them Dr.Pepper to drink cannot be healthy for their diet?
They need the soda to wash down the McDonalds quarter pounder with cheese
Chimpanzee's have a similar body to us
They need sugar in there diet as long as its not all the time then its ok to give them some like 2 times a week just to keep there blood levils high
@@tdoggo7614 lol!!
One prison to the next but with cell mates now
At least they have cell mates better that being isolated and alone.
Hi Jessica, thanks for your informative comment. Much appreciated.
Arvor Pepper how is this sanctuary different than a road side circus. From what I see is their just locket in bigger cages. Chimp eden us a sanctuary, their out climbing trees, running and playing not locked in cages all day on cement floors. They need to be outside in the sun in the day time.
I thought zoo accreditation organizations, like AZA, required heated winter enclosures for all tropical species, including chimpanzees and gorillas. Most european, japanese, and USA zoos adhere to this standard.
Grins mean scared I’d like to see a video of this place.
We can save the chimpanzees from extinction by raising them as chattle for meat and fertilizer.
2:25. And you're welcome.
This is real chimp behavior. Still want one of these "cute little guys" as a pet?

That's embarrassing that they left the guy falling over in this mini doc. They could have edited that out. It a slap to the face,
Is this place better and bigger now?
Is Billy still alive ? his profile is not on the website,

Onions... Onions everywhere! :'(
Yes my house also reeks of damn onions. Lol1
Ursos também merecem ser salvos desse lugar horroroso.Mas as pessoas se importam com chipanzé que são violentos e canibais.A vida é assim uns tem sorte outros não.
This is sad I hate peoples who keep them as pet they not pet at all
This is much better, but still it would be better if they were not caged and could go to a rserve in Africa with the climate and surroundings they were born to
This sanctuary, while better than the previous caged environment, still sucks donkey dick!!!
