  • This video shows how we made our DIY Loft Bed for our Sprinter Van camper conversion. The bed has 37-1/2" of clearance so our mountain bikes can fit underneath it.
We bought 5 different steel bed frames at the 2nd hand store for anywhere from $5.00 - $15.00 each, totaling up to about $67.00 including tax.
For the wood slats we used 14 whitewood 1x2's and 2 fir 1x8's from Lowe's for a total of about $55.00 (if we did it again, we'd probably use more 1x2's so the spaces between would be narrower) and finally, 30 feet of Poly pro 1" white webbing at $17.70
    Total cost: about $140.00.

This bed is genius. Of all the videos I have watched, why has no one come up with this before...use the rails that we use for a bed already!

The elevated bed seems to me to be the best configuration by far for a Camper Van, I don't understand why it isn't more common.

Same here Robert - it just makes the most sense in our opinion!

Great idea to repurpose the bed frames! We just purchased a 2020 Ford Transit to convert this winter (we live in MI) currently waiting for our Havlock wool to arrive, planning and watching lots of UA-cams glad we came across yours 👍

Very nice bed frame. Thanks for documenting and sharing. I repurposed old bed frames for a couple applications in my van too :-) Strong & cheap material.

I heard bed frames are made out some of the sturdiest steel.

That could be... We sure don't know. But they're certainly sturdy enough for our bed! Thanks for the comment!

What is the dimensions of the bed?????

The bed platform is the full width of the van and 80" long. It fits a queen-sized mattress with about 5" to spare on each side.

Nice job, did you compare to the IKEA bed slats that provide some spring and movement ? www.ikea.com/us/en/p/luroey-slatted-bed-base-00160215/

Yes, we checked Ikea before building these slats. Ikea ones go crosswise, not lengthwise and we needed a total length of 80" so we just built our own. But yeah if they would have had the right size that would have been a lot easier!
