- An alert Facebook reader sent in this video of two dogs posturing over some kibble scattered on the ground. To read more about what's going on here, check out Patricia McConnell's blog, The Other End of the Leash at: www.patriciamcc...

Lots of calming signals, in both of dogs. The female on the right "manages" the movements of the male using calming signals: the breath when he moves his hind leg, she turns her head when he looks elsewhere, she sits... it seems she's saying "ok, you can eat, if you approach in the right way" When necessary, she gives a warning with her lips... I like when she licks her nose walking away. Maybe mother and son? Or flatmates and the male is the youngest?
After watching it about three times I think the one on the right determined what happened next. The one on the left is doing all the negotiating, or all the asking, so he has an effect on what is happening but because the dog on the right is closer to the food, not moving away, he may have a stronger advantage. But dominant, there's that tricky work again. Don't know if it's that one sided, I would love to her PM opinion. It's an excellent example of how sophisticated dogs communicate.
Debra Devano, Isn't left dog dominant because he successfully pushes to the food? Right dog sits down as left dog approaches. Right dog appears to guard the food, but left dog is resolute, such that right dog seems "stuck" in staying away. In a way, right dog "gives way". If dominance is about 'control of resources,' does left dog have the contro, because he gets the food. He looks submissive on his approach, but can't dominance be sophisticated or even sneaky looking? All guessing here...
It's funny to read about dominance and submission and who's top dog, then watch this video without the sound on. I can see that the dog on the left is asking permission to have the kibble. He has to go slowly and carefully to show he is sincere, like humans do when asking if they can get food. We don't order at a takeaway and then launch ourself across the counter, shoveling food in our mouths, do we? In the same way, the dog takes his time.
Love the signals the left one makes. He's a smart cookie! He eases his way in so slowly and the prize is his without conflict :)
AMAZING! Sneaky dog is like, 'Me? Steal food from Your Highness? Oh, I would never do that. Look! I'm just lying down to show how much I respect Your Highness. And.. I'll just move a little closer to the kibble... just to smell it, of course. I'm gonna move a little closer again... and take a little nibble..." LOL
Very interesting exchange to witness. I expected the dog on left to get the food but also half expected the dog in right to put up for of a stink.
Dominance is about predictability, so there's no "dominant" or "subordinate" when you observe ONE interaction between 2 individuals.
I'm about to give a seminar on dog behavior and I've been looking for this video for weeks! You are a life-saver. Thank you!!
Really interesting. My bet was on dog on the left after dog on the right did the lookaway about 7 seconds in. Are these dogs related? My gut feeling was that dog on the left is a young relative of dog on the right.
Looked like the one on the right was in control. the one on the left was testing his limits and then went down to eat the food.
Awesome video. Would I be right in saying that the left-side dog was dominant in this situation?
Good call! I don't remember where I first saw this, but it said that the dog on the right is the mother of the dog on the left. Apparently she "won" until he was about 6 months old and now he always wins.
This was fascinating to watch. It was interesting to watch the exchange of body language.
Do Not Watch it.... it is setting up 2 dogs to be hurt needlessly. Dogs need a human handler to PREVENT fights, not post youtube vids for people who are ignorant to speculate about. Report the video!
