What people don't know is that the 276 HP on the N is the wheel HP, the crank is around 320-330 from dynos when the car is stock. The Type R 315 HP is from the crank. That is why the N is cheaper and a little bit better value

Joe is at his best/most interesting when he's comparing cars. Would love to hear more comparisons to other cars even when he's not driving them on the same day! Unfortunately with $5000+ ADM (or at auction) on the Type R, it's hard to make the argument that CTR is worth 50k. I mean, the Elantra N is obviously the better buy even at MSRP, but the fact that you might have a shot at getting an "N" at MSRP, vs no shot in getting a CTR at MSRP just changes the conversation completely.

The Elantra N is a decent buy at MSRP. I wouldn't call it a great buy. There's a reason the Type-R is more money, besides just being a faster car: The engineering, the rarity, the pedigree, the fact it's made in Japan again, the track performance, the residual value, higher quality materials, paint quality, etc.
One other main thing he doesn't mention is long term values and reliability. There is no comparison at that point. So yeah if you don't care about that, and just wanna have some fun on the cheap, and hope Hyundai honors their warranty, and don't own it past that warranty period. Yeah Elantra N is a fun buy.

@@BigBear-- Humm, I'm gonna have to disagree. First off, the new Type-R is slower than the last generation which was proven and can be seen on the Throttle house UA-cam channel. If you line the best version of each car (Elantra N DCT vs new CTR), the Elantra N will win !
On the engineering front, the EN easily matches the CTR thanks to Mr. Albert Biermann ! The only real reason the CTR is more expensive is the so called "pedigree" which I don't really get since Hyundai's been mopping the floor with Honda in both the TCR and WRC circuits ! Here in Canada, the new CTR starts at $50K ! That $10K over the EN and you're not going any faster for the extra $$$ and the CTR has no character either. I do acknowledge that the Honda CTR is an excellent/quality car and you can't wrong with buying one...the only problem the CTR has is the existence of the Elantra N !
Just my opinion and a little biased as well since I own a 2022 Elantra N !

I’m not saying it’s quicker than some of the more high end cars out there, but dang is it quick. It surprises me too sometimes cause from a roll, the slight anti-lag (I’m quite sure the car has a the system as I can feel the boost actually does stay after shifting) helps rocket the car faster than you’d expect. I will testdrive a new FL5 this year and compare each other. For me the i30 has already won, because of the price. 17k € less than a CTR is a world. I paid 39.000 € for my N and the CTRs MSRP in Germany is 56.000 €. Crazy. It can't be that much better for 17k more.

Third is a big one and that’s cost. Getting a lot of bang for your buck and a lot cheaper. Good luck finding a type r at msrp paying a heavy markup for one. Do your due diligence and shop around beyond just your local dealers. I had to contact over 100+ dealers with Type-R allocations, in over 9+ states, and different regions to find my Type-R. Of all the dealers 2 got back to me with the lowest offers of "only" 10K over msrp. I took those 2 offers to a third local dealer (who I previousl got my 2020 Si Coupe from) that initially told me first 15K over, then 12K over, and negotiated them down to around 8K over. Ended up paying ~53K, and they threw in some free accessories and their 7 year Diamond Coat ceramic coating package. But I was ok with up to 10K over, that was my cap, and I wouldn't go higher. Main thing is shop around, and know the cap your willing to go to.
Funny part is the day I was planning on visiting the dealer at 5pm, I get a call around 11am from my sales guy and he tells me another sales guy has a customer on the way that's ready to buy their Type-R, but he's in Philly over 2hr drive away, so If I got there in time I could snag it. Which is what I did. We were finalizing the paperwork, and they had to call the guy to tell him the car sold, when he was 15min away. I could hear him yelling at the sales manager on the phone from 10 feet away. I was cracking up...🤣

Both cars have pros and cons. Honda is shutting out buyers by not offering an automatic and no doubt would make it a quicker car. Plus, they use a dreadful CVT like in the regular Civic. The DCT and manual options offered in the N gives an advantage. As far as pricing…Honda dealers are charging a big premium for the Type R. Can’t see spending a 5-15k MSRP premium. Elantra is priced very good in this class…10k less than the Type R. With the markup it could be up to 20k. That’s a lot of money for insurance, gas, and tires.

Loved this review Joe! I’m sure someone else has said it already, but I’ll reiterate the DCT version of the Elantra N is actually the better car, but I understand the apples to apples comparison between the manuals. The DCT is a quicker and more capable car though. And just a fun fact, the pops aren’t because of extra fuel being dumped on heavy throttle, it’s actually the anti-lag feature that keeps boost through the gears. So when paired with the DCT it feels very, very quick. Such a fun car! But back to the comparison of the CTR to the EN, great job taking a neutral approach despite being a CTR owner. They’re both fantastic cars for sure, but with very different personalities.
